《Chronicles of Magnus》Book 1: Rise of the Vermilion Bird - Volume 1 - Prologue

The dark night sky was engulfed with a crimson flame, spreading as if wanting to compete with the sun rising during dawn. At the same time a screech filled with agony echoed through the southern realm of the continent of Pangaea.
The Vermilion Bird is in pain as it tried to flee. The combined power of the attacks it received moments ago far exceeded this deity’s expectation. The individual strength behind each force is tolerable, but the amalgamation of all seven powers inflicted a fatal wound on the Vermilion Bird’s back.
Unable to go further, the Vermilion Bird crashed to the far slope of Mt. Magayon, a dormant volcano surrounded by the forest of Daragang. The land shook as it received the weight of the gigantic deity. A shockwave of wind and dust blew across the crash site extending miles in all direction.
At the same time seven silhouettes darted across the sky, racing against each other to the location of their prey. Pushing and hindering the other, each dark figure fought to gain the advantage of being first in the scene.
A shriek from the fallen Vermilion Bird was then heard as it let out a beam of concentrated crimson light from its beak. Catching the dark figures off guard, the force behind the ray scattered the predators as they scrambled away from the range of the deadly spell.
Then, there was an explosion in the sky, turning night into day for an instant. Six of the seven figures were sent rolling towards different locations. The last one fell to the ground, crashing near the body of the giant deity.
A few moments later, the last dark figure slowly stood up and limped as it walk towards the Vermilion Bird. Black blood is flowing from its amputated left arm.
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that the last of your power? Oh, how proud of you Suzaku!” the figure mocked the Vermilion Bird as it drew closer to the deity’s head.

“Unfortunately for you, it seems you did not have any strength left to give your prized Hyper Beam enough force to kill me!!!”
The Vermilion Bird, though weak, stared in defiance to the dark red eyes of the approaching figure.
“Beelzebub! Do not assume for an instant you won!” shouted Suzaku. “I will not allow you to gloat further!”
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, or you will do what?!” Beelzebub mockingly replied. “What can you do?! in your condition?! Against BEELZEBUB, one of the Princes of Hell, King of Gluttony?!”
Suzaku fell silent. It could not refute the demon.
“Now Suzaku! Die! I will put your spirit core to good use! Or is it evil use? Hahahahahaha”
Beelzebub stretched out its remaining arm. A spherical black energy formed in front of its open palm and aimed to the dying deity. But before it was fired towards Suzaku, the Vermilion Bird’s body let out rays of light originating from the center of its torso.
“I am the Vermilion Bird Suzaku! Guardian Deity of the South! My powers are mine and to the one whom I choose as worthy! And you are not the one!” Suzaku cried as the remaining of its strength exploded from within its body.
The sheer force of the explosion not only decimated the Vermilion Bird but it also engulfed Beelzebub in an unavoidable force. At this moment, a marble shaped crimson red crystal the size of a fist flew to the sky from the centre of the bang. It accelerated with the speed of light out pacing the deadly energy it left behind.
A dark energy also flew out from Beelzebub, trying to chase after the crystal. As if using all its strength, it gradually consolidated into pure dark power and dashed towards its target.
When the dark energy caught up, it crashed into the crystal with extreme force. Another explosion occurred but this time, as if declaring it is far stronger than all the previous fat of strength combined, it created a crack in the sky leading to a space filled of void.

The two opposing forces struggle against each other. And as if fate declared a victor, the powers suddenly merged into one. It looked as if the crystal swallowed the dark energy forming a dark speck in its core.
But the momentum from the struggle made the winning power to shoot through the crack, leaving behind a trail of black and crimson light.
After a moment of clam, ripples around that area of the sky formed. A loud rumbling sound was heard as if an avalanche was happening in the sky. The crack is being forced to close as if both sides are being stitched together. Seconds passed and the sky looked as if nothing happened.
And then there was silence.

Techno-Heretic
Eli is an ancient man sentenced to death for the crime of surpassing the sacred number of 32.8, which is the allowed percentage of increased mental ability from the use of AI chips. As he journeys through death and into a world of fantasy and magic, he finds himself approaching never before seen heights of magical power and ability. Powers that will shape the world and would see him go down in legends for generations ever after. But just because someone acquires magical abilities, that doesn't mean magic is suddenly the most important thing in their life. Some people aren't looking to be all-powerful gods, have the world bow at their feet, or spend their days obsessing over accumulating ever more power. Some people just want acceptance, stability, and the warmth of their loved ones to drive away the cold loneliness of the night. And in a world where magic is the bedrock of society, where magic is what determines who is preferred for siring children, where people with high magical ability are destined to live in great luxury and those without magic simply live to make due, this difference in values and perspective could not have a starker contrast. As Eli and the people around him navigate the misconceptions and deceptions of this world, he will represent a great and magnificent future for the human race. One where humanity will stand above the elves, dwarves, orcs, fairies, and all the horrors of the world. Sadly, men's tools are as fallible as the people who make them, and in a society where the potential of an individual is determined solely through their magical level, this seed of promise may yet turn venomous. Sweet Minds
"No one can see it, some can feel it, and only the few can use it. We belong to the few." Marith Merryfield felt anything but merry that morning. She found herself waiting for a delayed train on a deserted platform, in the freezing cold of the Dutch autumn. Just when the strangeness is making her consider turning around and going back home an empty train rolls into the station. For reasons unclear to this day she decides to get onboard. An unlikely, and quite impossible, train accident is about to hurtle her into a world she had always suspected existed. It was a dark and absurd place she had rejected and suppressed when she was young. Now she would need that dormant part of herself to survive. After a brief hospitalization she must choose between two continents and finds herself reluctantly boarding a plane to Oregon to be reunited with her shadows. She returns to the town she grew up in, which is where her father still lives and her childhood memories linger. By the end of the week the mysterious train accident turns out to be the least of her problems. Her life was never supposed to become this serious this fast. Through an improbable and unfortunate series of events she is soon introduced to a motley crew of characters that appear to be carrying the same struggles through life. They possess a familiar sense of inadequacy and insecurity. Marith realizes that for the first time in her life she has found herself a tribe, or, as they prefer to call it, a Chain. She is introduced to a world of Prophets, Runners and Mages led by an Oracle and a Watchmaker. Over the course of several weeks Marith learns that, together with her Chain, she is expected to save this fabric of reality, by fighting a mysterious and immortal creature and his aggressive pet. In order to have a chance at overcoming this force of nature she has to revisit the darkest and most desolate corners of her mind. ***** The total word count of the first 12 chapters amounts to about 85.000 words. The Immortal
There was once a certain man who never died. When ancient trees withered, he flourished. When kingdoms, empires, and nations fell, he stood. When surrounded by immortals, he laughed. And when the world was gone, he remained. This is his tale. I take 0% credit for the title picture. I just pasted stuff together and did the best I could with a mac touchpad.
