《Phantom Path》Chapter 10: Lady In The Lake

In a dream, a concept of a desire bound to a childhood memory, a heart of peace yet sad as he runs through his hometown with friends, Ezek sees himself. And to a familiar scent of freshly baked bread that catches his nose, his feet turn to a house he remembers from long ago. Upon opening the door, bathed in warmth is his heart to the smile of the person setting the table inside the cosy house, his mother he quickly recognizes. But though he calls out for her, he hears no sound from his voice, but still it seems she understands what he said, gesturing for him to come over to her. With his little feet, he climbs onto the chair next to her, given by her warm bread with a gentle smile as she kindly pats his hair as he eats. And words being said, it frustrates him as he does not hear her, looking up to her as he sees his dream begins to fade. And that's when it hits him, as it's a face he hasn't seen in a long while, a smile he's been missing for a long time. And so he tries to grasp her every detail on her face, but too late as gone away is his dream, as his eyes have now opened.
Coming back to reality, he lifts himself, rubbing his hair as he yawns out the rest of the complex feeling in his chest. And starting his day off, he takes a long shower, then to do checkups on his guns, cleaning with wiping them as well, eating with brushing his teeth after. He then steps out to the cloudy morning, fixing his hat on his head as he begins looking around, seeing the man who's staying in the room beside him. Asking for where his friend is, Ezek finds Nahshon sitting down at a bench as he feeds on some candy, his eyes lost in the clouds above.
"Ah, Ezek," Nahshon sees him. "This store gave me some grizzys for free since I often go there. You want one?"
Weeks has gone since that quest, and an aching body and restless mind haunt has Nahshon in the nights since, only eased by the herbs given by Dahlia and the funny yet motivational speeches from Anne. And these days they've separated; Ezek on tougher jobs like fighting monsters, while Nahshon has decided to stick with lighter ones like helping shop owners and farmers.
"I swear that's your 20th grizzly candy in four days now," Ezek tells him, accepting his offer and taking a seat beside him either way, nodding as he tries to think of a way to start a conversation. "...Where you from?"
"Hm," Nahshon softly chuckles. "I don't think you'll believe me if I tell you"
"Ahh, lemme guess, you're gonna say another world again??"

"I told you," Nahshon shrugs.
"Alright...how about the country?"
"Oh, I'm from a place called Jamaica"
"Really? tell me a little about it"
"Well...my country is filled with a lot of...' interesting' people and...yeah...that's it"
"Uh-huh," Ezek goes, a big smirk on his face as he shakes his head, still not believing that this is the person he is stuck with.
"You don't believe anything I said, don't?"
"Well, I do hear an accent," Ezek assures, putting his hat on his lap. "I've just never heard of that country before"
"I see..." Nahshon's voice fades, clueless on what next to say, Ezek looking at Nahshon who's become puzzled, scratching the side of his head as he looks to the ground, knowing he wants to ask some questions too.
"Anyways, what time is it?" Ezek sighs, stretching as he gets up.
"It's almost 10' now," Nahshon tells him.
"Alright, let's go. Remember, we're on the same job today"
"Hmm, yeah," Nahshon nods, as his viewing of the sky finishes for now, both going back to their room to gear up and catch a carriage for their destination, and just in time they reach, Dahlia and her granddad already finishing with packing most of the supplies inside the truck, with the boys finishing the rest as they come forward, Dahlia's granddad thanking Ezek by shaking his hand after.
"How are you these days, son?" The granddad asks, his hand placed on the boy's shoulder.
"Never better," Ezek shrugs, nodding to the old man.
"Hmm," The old man shakes his head, his guilt towards Ezek bothering his heart. "I can't believe I had my emotions get the better of me to trouble such a kind soul"
"Tsk, it's alright. After all, it was your family that was in danger. It's understandable," Ezek says, chuckling along with the old man as they bond, with Nahshon and Dahlia fixing up the back for some space to sit in the truck.
"And how about you?" Dahlia asks Nahshon, bumping with her body.
"Huh? Oh, well, I'm good," Nahshon smiles, nodding his head.
"Okay then," She giggles.
"What?"
"Here. This is Vila," She hands him the item.
"...More drugs??" He asks, sniffing the jar as he becomes suspicious.
"No, tt's good for you, idiot. It helps with mana improvement," She laughs, shaking her head.
"Alright, we're set to go now," Ezek tells them.
Into the back of the truck they set themselves, with Dahlia's granddad behind the steering wheel. And comes the afternoon as they're still on the black roads of their long journey, chatting and laughing together as they complete multiple supply drop-offs. And completing their run, within one of the villages they book themselves rooms of a hotel as the sun begins to go down, its colour fading from another day as one is scared to go to a location by herself, Dahlia who drags Nahshon and Ezek as her bodyguards to the nearby hot springs the village is famous for. Her skin shy to heat it feels, still she dips herself into the bath to wash her body, soothed by the bubbles that massage her muscles, while Ezek and Nahshon stand watch just around the trees.

"Looks like we're gonna be here for a while," Ezek tells him, his back resting against a tree.
"Hmm," Nahshon sounds, sitting down by a tree as well. "Hey, how long have you been an outlaw for?"
"Since I was eight or nine," Ezek answers. "It's been a long time since I've joined them"
"Hmm. Is it cool being an outlaw? Don't you have to run from the lawmen most of the time?"
"Wait, Wait," Ezek chuckles. "We call ourselves that, but we aren't actually outlaws per se. It was a nickname given to Lenny by the soldiers a long time ago, because of how he dresses. Hence the name 'red revolver outlaws'"
"Ahh," Nahshon nods, thinking of another thing he also knows about them. "So, what about the bounty then?"
"That...I don't even know how he found out about that?" Ezek puts his hand to his chin, reminded of Horik's words.
"What you mean?"
"Lenny was doing some underground stuff before he formed his party. He said he pissed some people off, but he hasn't explained to us exactly what he did, and we aren't really pushy to find out either," Ezek explains.
"I see"
"Whew," Dahlia comes, exhaling as she comes around in fresh clothes, still patting her hair with a towel.
"You done now, princess?" Ezek jokes.
"Huh, I should've stayed longer if I knew you were both bonding here," Dahlia smiles, both of the boys looking at each awkwardly.
"Tch," Ezek hisses, beginning with walking ahead. "Let's go before your old man thinks I kidnapped you again"
"You guys go on ahead," Nahshon tells them. "I wanna walk around some more before I go in"
"You sure you don't want us to follow?" Dahlia invites.
"Nah, it's good. I just wanna...venture a bit more"
"Hm, Well, come on, Dahlia," Ezek tells her, yawning as he grows tired. "Your old man is probably freaking out right now. Don't want him calling the troopers on me again"
"Huh...alright. Be safe out there," She tells him, onto following behind Ezek. "And my grandad isn't that overprotective, you know"
"Yeah, well, I'm not trying to go to jail again, that's' all," Ezek tells her, looking back at Nahshon walking the opposite direction as Dahlia speaks her mind.
And slowly the sky begins washing away its warm colours, and risen is the billions of stars along with the moon. In his path Nahshon stops, to an owl nesting in the tree, its eyes staring into his as he listens to the ambience of the nearby village. Its eyes black with the moon shining behind its feathers, Nahshon wonders why he's not afraid as he walks alone, his sword as his only companion on his stroll, doing his usual mumbling as he walks on the stone path, as amid the trees, he finds an apple that he suddenly craves for. And so he traverses across the barks with his now superhuman feats, continuing his walk as he feeds on his catch, his stroll quickly coming to another stop as his heart begins beating with his mind jumbled, stopping his consumption of the fruit at the sight laid before his eyes, the elegance making his tongue go blank of no words. Hair of bright silver, and skin of snow, washing her flawless body in the cold lake alone, with the moonlight at her skin like light against a diamond, having her just as beautiful, glimmering and pure. By his view of her beauty, she turns to the frozen boy, sensing his presence that does not startle her, his eyes met with bright red ones that stiffen his legs as she calmly covers her breasts with her hands, Nahshon snapping out of his trance as he begins looking everywhere but on her.
"I...didn't mean to disturb you. I was just walking by..." He awkwardly waves both hands.
"Hmmm," She sounds. "Why is your heart beating so fast? Is this your first time spying on a defenceless girl?"
"What...?" He awkwardly smiles.
"Tell me. Since you've 'accidentally' come across my bathing, how will you make me forgive you?" She charges, arising out of the lake with revealing the rest of her beauty that shies away the eyes of the boy.
"I..." He sighs into silence, his eyes to the ground before he could see her lower areas.
"Hm," She smirks, tilting her head, and emerge is a fume of black smoke that engulfs her body, appearing bats that swarm Nahshon before he could lift out his sword, scaring him into closing his eyes as he drops his apple in using his hands as shields, as like an angry tornado, they circle him with screeches that ache his ears, going into a calmness after what seemed like an eternity of a nightmare, all of them done with provoking the boy as he drops to the ground, frightened as he sweats in the chilly night, looking around as he realizes that she has disappeared like a ghost in the dark, with his apple and sword missing as well, resting his head on the cold stone as he drops a silent f' bomb.

Life of a Core
After a disembodied voice had told him he was what amounted to an exceptionally talented rock, it had been hard to not let it go to his non-existent head. Until, random chance had decided to give him a square kick in the minerals. Which had in turn forced him to fend for himself in an unknown land, all while he attempted to make sense of his place in the world. Truthfully though, all he had really wanted to do from the start had been to bury himself a hundred feet below the ground and be left to his own devices. Yet, for one reason or another, nobody ever seemed willing to leave the dungeon-building core alone long enough to actually make one. Each chapter will average around two to three thousand words, the release schedule is still a WIP but you should expect the first six chapters to be released over the next six days. This is planned out as a dungeon building fiction, but don't expect it right off the bat! The story is a depiction of the everyday adventures (alongside an overarching plot) of what I imagine a dungeon core would experience when thrust into a random environment where everything and everyone tried to covet or eat him. I also really enjoy reading the comments and reviews people leave and would love to get some reader involvement with the story itself, likely through polls at the end of each chapter. I hope you enjoy my story! (If you feel like some of the characters seem familiar, you may have read some older work I wrote a while back under a different account. If you happen to be one of my old readers and recognize the similarities, I'm happy to have you back!)
