《Gold Coin Tower (paused)》Chapter 1: Feeling of emptiness (3)

When he saw the young woman looking at his hands, he raised his left hand and showed the ring on his ring finger.
Vanroc smiled slightly and continued, "I put the letter aside.
After I finished packing, I brought the bag to the door that led into the garden. I planned to travel in three to five days, hoping to find someone to rent or buy the house.
By this time it was already dark outside, so I went to the kitchen and made myself something to eat. As I thought about where to put the things of myself and my grandfather, when I rented or sold the house, I smelled something. With the feeling that the temperature was rising and the air was getting thicker, I left the kitchen. I saw flames in the front part of the house and went straight to the back door, took my bag and fled into the garden.
I ran about ten yards into the garden before looking around. When I saw six of my neighbors coming over, I was relieved. No matter what, we would help each other out in such situations.
At least that's what I thought.
After seeing the three of them in advance, I saw that they carried pitchforks and big hammers. At the same time, the other three in the background began to throw burning torches at my house.
Now I understood that they had not come to help me. Shocked and confused, I started to run. I fled under the protection of the night. "
He looked at the young woman in front of him. As he told her his story from the last twenty days, he could tell by the look on her face that she felt everything as if she'd had his experiences.
She looked at Vanroc, her eyes seemed much softer than before. An unknown period of time has passed. They just looked at each other. She had a thoughtful look while he had a questioning look on his face.

The young woman broke the silence and began to speak, "That's really terrible. Why did they do it? "
Vanroc shrugged and with a thoughtful look into the distance said, "I really do not know. I wish I knew the reason. "
When she saw that Vanroc did not seem to know why, she changed the subject, "And what do you want to do from now on?"
That was a good question. That was why he was sitting here by the river.
Vanroc smiled crookedly as he answered the question, "I'm not sure. I do not know why they burned down my house. I do not know why the villagers have changed. I do not know what to do now. "
The young woman could clearly hear the helplessness in the voice of this young man.
After thinking for a moment, she replied, "I think you should go to the bigger city, as you planned earlier, and try your luck there. If you are out of luck there, you can come to my home country. It is a bit far from here but has many friendly people. Do you have something to write with you?"
When he heard her words, he did not know if her suggestion would help him.
He did not know her and did not know to what extent he could trust her if even the people with whom he spent his entire life suddenly wanted to get rid of him.
Did she just want to fool him?
Should he give her something to write?
Since Vanroc could think, everyone in the village was always friendly and helpful like her. And now they wanted to burn him overnight with his home!
When he thought about it, he realized he would not find an answer if he did not try.

As Vanroc drifted away with his thoughts, the young lady waited with a smile on her lips. It seemed that she had a strong sense of confidence as if she already knew what Vanroc would do.
When Vanroc came to his senses, he decided to give her a paper and a paintbrush. Inside, he wanted to trust someone, in spite of or because of what had happened.
He turned to his bag, rummaged in it, took out the paper and brush, and handed it to the young lady.
She accepted both and started writing something on it. Then she folded the paper once and gave both back. After Vanroc had taken the items back, he wanted to thank her when he realized he did not know her name.
"We have not introduced ourselves yet, I'm Vanroc Mirai."
When she heard Vanroc's introduction, she answered with a sassy and teasing smile, "Hello Vanroc, if we meet again, I'll tell you my name. It looks like I have to go now. "
As she spoke the last sentence, her gaze wandered to her right side. When Vanroc followed her gaze, he saw someone in the distance. There was a man wearing armor.
The young woman turned her face back to Vanroc, "Good luck! I hope to see you again in the future. "
When she had finished her sentence, she went to the armored man. Before Vanroc could say anything, the young lady and the man in armor were out of sight.
What remained was a surprised and confused man sitting on a stone beside a river.
He was not sure what he should think of the sudden departure of his conversation partner. He remembered the note he still held in his hand.
He opened the note and was surprised that there were the names of a continent, a country and a city of which he had never heard before.

Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends
In the civilized world of humans, 'monsters' have all but passed into legend. But when something goes bump in the night, when people begin to disappear, when a dark mystery begins to haunt even the most peaceful villages, there is only one organization to turn to: the Hunters. The Venatori. Having lived a life of discipline and service, former soldier Caiden Voros finds something even worse than the wars of humans: the monsters that hunt them. Horrors yet unknown even to him and his many scars await in the claws, talons, fangs, and mysterious powers of creatures so far beyond humans that he must dedicate himself entirely to the art of slaying them. Harboring a secret of his own and in a constant struggle to find answers while maintaining his sanity, however, Caiden begins to ask the age-old question... Who is truly worse, the monsters or the Men? Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends is an episodic collection of stories, each of which stand on its own, but they also build upon each other in a consecutive order, bridging a gap between a novel and short story collection. These stories follow monster hunter Caiden Voros and his partner Gwen Vergil as they embark on tales of mystery, horror, and adventure to track down monsters - the living dead, beast-men, shape-shifters, spirits, and many more - that would do harm to innocent lives and, by whatever means necessary, put a stop to their terrors. Their motives, however, are not always what they seem.
