《Lead to You》Chapter 5

Wind whipped at my face as we drove through the picturesque road in a convertible. Ethan was driving effortlessly with one hand while resting the other one on the door. A white shirt and sunglasses is exactly what he needed for him to look like the poster-boy for this car. He was an attractive man and I couldn't deny it. My blue sundress was no match for him.
Ever since we landed in Hawaii he hadn't said much as usual. Except he asked about my foot twice, which was completely fine now. The swelling and pain had considerably reduced. I could finally enjoy my so called honeymoon.
I loved beaches and tropical islands, New York wasn't a place where you could enjoy the beaches.Mom and Dad used to take us on vacations almost every year before we went off to college.Even though mom hated the sun and preferred hill stations she never left a stone unturned to to have fun together at all the vacation spots. She was the one who taught me swimming and overcome my fear of water. I remember the one time we went snorkelling. The memory hit me like a truck on the sight of the sparkling ocean.
"Sky, don't worry, we've worked hard to overcome your fear I'm sure you'll enjoy snorkelling with your brother." Mom said while reading a magazine, lounging on the beach.
"But mom what if I drown or worse what if a shark comes by?"I whined like a toddler to get out of this.
"Then I gotta pray for the shark," Asher remarked sassily, "Don't be silly Skylar sharks don't come this near to the shore and in case you drown, you'll have to swim and just in case if you don't come up in 3 minutes I'll look for you."
"Fine." I stormed off to change and heard mom and Asher snickering.
It was one of those times when despite being so apprehensive I enjoyed snorkelling. It was a core memory of me overcoming my fear of the water. That had eventually led me to go scuba diving--something I looked forward to here as well. Guess I had mom and Asher to thank for introducing me to the ocean.
Ethan stopped the car smoothly as we entered a big resort, bell boys came and wordlessly got our luggage. A guy, same as Ethan's age came and hugged him. Ethan patted on his back , "Finally after 3 years you decided to take some time off work." He said in a joking manner, Ethan gave him a smile, a gorgeous smile. Wow this was the first time I've seen him smiling and wonder why he deprived me of that.
"Oh come on James," he laughed and pat James' back, "Where is Samantha?" he asked. Samantha? But before my question was answered James gave me a side hug,"You must be Skylar, Ethan's wife." Wife. Wow that was weird. I smiled and nodded at him. "Liam told me all about you, sorry I couldn't make it to the wedding. I couldn't leave the resort in such a busy season."

"It's all good. Nice to meet you James," I said with a pleased expression.
Before any of us could proceed further with the conversation, a woman's squeal was heard as she materialised out from the back,
"Oh my gosh I cannot believe they're finally here!" She was sporting a pair of jean cut offs with a tank top and jumped up to hug Ethan.
Ethan pressed his ear mockingly before hugging her back and then finally letting go, "I am so sorry, I just got so excited," She turned towards me, "Hi I am Samantha and please call me Sam and you must be Skylar!" She pulled me in for a hug, "I see you've already met my husband."
I nod, "Hi Sam, please call me Sky. It's nice to meet you too."
"Wow I still can't believe Ethan is married to someone so sweet," Ethan gave her an annoying look and both James and Ethan headed towards the reception. Sam grabbed my hand and dragged me towards the mini bar in the lounge. She ordered house special sangria for the both of us, the drinks were followed by wedding details which she was visibly unhappy for not attending. There was just one question that I wished she wouldn't ask and till now she hadn't.
I take out my wallet and pull a couple of 50s but Samantha catches my hand, I look at her questioningly,"Uhh...I just wanted to clear the bill?"
"Oh silly, did Ethan not tell you? We own this resort." Oh. That would explain why James couldn't leave for the wedding. But still I felt obliged to pay.
"Oh well that's fine, at least allow me to tip the server."
She smiled and let go of my hand, I gently rested the bill on the table before looking back up at her. "So tell me how did you guys meet? I mean as long as I've known Ethan he has been so reserved, how did you get him to open up? How did you guys fall in love? I want to know everything. Everything." And there was the dreaded question.
Oh boy, what do I say now? I was about to open my mouth when both the guys came. It was a shocking surprise when rather than sitting on a different chair Ethan slid in beside me and put his arm around me.There was a weird tingling at the bottom of my stomach at his close proximity. I didn't dare look up at him afraid that I'll melt completely.
Samantha gave a toothy smile upon seeing us like this.
"We met when our companies were getting ready for the merger." Ethan said glancing at me, "It was then when we started dating and finally got married." he stated as a matter of factly.
Well he wasn't wrong in the first half. Samantha squealed, "Oh, you guys are so cute. James I think we should leave them alone now. These lovebirds need to spend some time together."

"Enjoy your stay." James chimed as they left.
As soon as they left Ethan immediately stood up, scooting away from me. There was that instant detached feeling again as if it burnt him to be this close to me.
"Here's your copy of the key card. I'm sorry we have to be in the same room because we don't want Sam and James knowing anything." I nodded and he hesitated for a moment, "I will be at the bar." It was like he was talking to a client. Then again, this was just a business deal.
I left, nothing unexpected. The resort didn't have rooms, rather it allotted small cottages along the beach side. I reached the place and to say it was lavish would be an understatement. We had a private hot tub just outside facing the beach. The cottage looked authentic on the outside and the entire furniture matched the rustic vibe.
So far, everything was good except my travelling companion.
I freshened up and wore my night shirt and shorts.Since it was already evening, I doubt I'll go anywhere. I ordered dinner for 2 and ate my half.Covering up Ethan's portion, I left a sticky note saying "Heat me then Eat me." I kept the covered plate near the microwave and padded back to the living space.
I opened up my laptop and decided to catch up on some work. The new project on the upper east side had been coming up great but there was a slight problem in the ground floor plan. I opened up the blue print and thought around it but I was so tired I couldn't think straight so I forwarded it to Asher.
After a while, the door opened and Ethan walked in. He looked around for a minute and then grabbed his stuff from the bag before stepping into the shower. Not even a 'hi' or 'good evening'. Am I expecting too much from him?
I decided to watch some tv and went into the adjoining space. Halfway through a fresh scent tickled my nose as I saw Ethan walking out in a black t shirt that fit him so perfectly along with grey coloured sweatpants.Wow okay. The man was going to bed and still looked so perfect. I ignored him and continued to focus on the tv. I could see him in my peripheral vision reading the sticky note. He folded it up and pocketed it before re-heating his food. That put a small smile on my face.
Ethan came out of the kitchen holding his plate as if deciding where to go. He looked at me, then at the tv and finally decided to sit on the table with his laptop open in front of him. A workaholic through and through.
I sighed, realising this is how quiet and boring it's going to be from now on. I turned off the tv and slumped against the couch. Watching him eat was not an option or I'd come off as a creep. Scrolling through my phone again, I decided after a while that it's better if I sleep.
Before I could get up and go to the bed, Ethan stood up simultaneously. He discarded his plate and proceeded to sit on the bed with his back supported and laptop on his thighs.
I stood at the corner of the bed dumbfounded. He was mighty enough to spare me a single glance before getting back to his work. I just can't keep up with his thoughts.
I cleared my throat.No response.
I did it again.
Still no response, I decided to do it again for a third time but he finally looked up and raised a single eyebrow, "Is there a problem?"
Yes! You need to sleep somewhere else I need the bed. "I want to sleep. "
"Okay then, sleep?" He says confused.
"I need the bed." I clarify further.
"Yeah well, it's not like I'm sprawled on upon it's entirety. I can't take the couch because I barely fit there plus it's made of cane.If you want a good night's sleep you should just suck it up and sleep on other half of the bed."
My mouth hung open in shock, this was the most he has talked to me. Ever. I was still hesitant."Don't worry, I won't touch you."He added non-chalantly. That was offensive--not like I wanted him to touch me or anything. That'd be weird.
Imagine us spooning.
I shake my head and look at the empty half of the bed and then at the wooden couch that could strain my spine so bad that the next time I woke up I'd be The Hunchback.
Swallowing down my discomfort,I got under the covers and put 4 pillows between us.He rolled his eyes and continued working. I got comfortable. There was a small skylight just above the bed, allowing us to view the beautiful night sky.
The reality was crashing down on me, I glanced at Ethan who had now traded his laptop for a book.I immediately turned away from him.
The clear sky full of stars above me wasn't something that you could enjoy in the city, so I stared at it and thought about everything that has happened in the last 24 hours. I was holding the helm of the company my parents built from the ground up. I married a stranger to save the said company. It was like I was climbing up the stairs to brighter future but it just seemed more distant than it did before.
Lost in the thoughts, I didn't realise when I fell asleep.
