《Forward In Time》Chapter Twenty-Four

In the police airship, Lin looks at Zaofu as the team, with Suyin, walks in and Korra speaks, “I found out,” Lin turns back in alarm, “why you're so against coming here. Why didn't you ever tell me you had a sister?”
“Half-sister.” Lin replies
“Same mom, different dads, so what?” Suyin puts her hand over her heart, “We're blood, Lin, and after thirty years, the least you could do is say ‘hello’.”
“I have nothing to say to you.” Lin said bitterly
It was silent before Aang spoke up, “You two haven't spoken in thirty years? Why?”
“Ask her, I've tried.” Suyin replied
“Oh, don't put that on me.” Lin points a finger to Su and her sister places her arms akimbo, “You're the one who tore our family apart.”
“And you've done a bang up job keeping it that way.” Suyin says smugly and sarcastically
“You haven't changed one bit, have you?”
“Look, we can stay here arguing about the past all day, but that's not the reason both of the Avatars came here.” She turns to Korra and Aang, “My daughter is thrilled to meet you.”
“Toph’s granddaughter is an airbender?” Zuko asked.
“That’s cool! Toph your granddaughter is an airbender!” Sokka said as he nudged Toph.
“Huh?” Toph looked up, being pulled out of her thoughts, “Oh, yeah that’s cool.” She smiles lightly. Sokka frowns, noticing her odd behaviour.
“Lin, your niece is the new airbender! Isn't that amazing?” Korra says
“Yeah. Terrific.” Lin replies blankly

The group arrives at the Zaofu palace and Suyin shows them around. She first leads them to a field with metal columns, where a metal disc ricochets between, with a player on each side.
“Those are my two youngest, Wei and Wing.” Suyin explains, “They're playing a game called Power Disc. They invented it all on their own.”
Wing shoots the disc to Wei, who redirects it, ricocheting it between multiple columns. Wei fires the disc back, ricocheting against a column. Wing leaps to intercept the disc, but fails to catch it, which slams onto a net.

“Oh, nice power, Wei.” Suyin says
Wing pounds his hands and grumbles at his defeat as Wei says, “Ha! Wing goes down!”
“I'm so proud of those two.”
The group walks away and is led to a gallery filled with metal sculptures, where a sculptor works on one with metalbending.
“Huan, I'd like you to meet Avatar Korra and her friends. And your Aunt Lin. And Avatar Aang and his friends, including your grandmother.”
“Nice to meet you.” Korra says
“Hey.” Huan says without looking back. Korra looks confused.
“Wow, that's a really nice... banana?” Bolin says, “Yes, very, very lifelike.”
Huan sighs and turns to Bolin as he speaks irritably, “It's not a banana! It was inspired by Harmonic Convergence; represents the dawning of a New Age. Obviously.”
“Oh, yeah, no, uh, I can, I can totally see that.” Mako and Asami look amused in the background and they start walking off. Bolin forms a frame with his fingers, “I can, oh, let me stand here. Yes, I can see that now. Yes. Thank you.” He walks off, speaking away in a mocking fashion, “Banana.” He whispers to Mako, “I mean, that's a banana right?”
Sokka walks up next to Huan and looks at the piece, “Hm, you know I can see how it represents the dawning of a New Age.” He says
“Really?” Huan asks in surprise, looking at him.
“Mhm, and if you move that metal thingy,” He points to a piece on the art, “with that metal thingy, I think you can represent that more.”
Zuko walks back over with an unamused expression and begins dragging Sokka away as Huan looks at his art, “Interesting…”
Suyin leads the group towards a slightly younger teenaged lady reading a book on a bench, “And this is my daughter, Opal.”
Opal turns toward the guests, “Wow, Avatar Korra.” She stands up, “I can't believe you're here. You are so amazing.”
“It's great to meet you, Opal.” Korra replies

Opal smiles and then notices Aang and gasps, “Avatar Aang! I’m so glad I can meet you after all the amazing stories my mom has told me of you!”
“Nice to meet you too.” Aang says with a smile, “And you can just call me Aang.”
Opal nods and that’s when she sees Toph, “Grandma Toph!” She rushes up to the earthbender and pulls her in for a hug, “It’s so nice to meet you!”
“Uh, nice to meet you too.” Toph replies and awkwardly hugs her granddaughter while Lin storms toward them.
“Great. We've found the airbender. Let's take her back to the airship and get out of here.” Lin said
“And the woman apparently trying to abduct you is your aunt Lin.” Suyin said
“Really?” Opal said as she pulled away from Toph, “I've always wanted to meet you. My mom has told so many stories about you.”
“I'm sure she has.” Lin said, annoyed and coldly. Opal looks confused by Lin's behavior.
“So I've set all of you up in the guesthouses while Aang trains Opal.” Suyin says
“Oh, I'm sorry. But I was hoping she could train with the rest of the airbenders at the Northern Temple.” Aang said
“That sounds amazing.” Opal said
“Nonsense. This is where Opal's home and family are. You can train her here.” Suyin replies
“I guess I could help her get started.” Aang said
“Absolutely not! We're leaving.” Lin said
“She's just a little worried because there's a bunch of crazy criminals after Aang and I.” Korra explained
“If you're concerned about security, don't be. This is the safest city in the world.” Lin rolls her eyes in annoyance, “Now I'll see you all at dinner. And come hungry. My chef will blow the taste buds right out of your mouth.”
“Why do you have such a problem with your sister? She seems nice.” Korra said. Lin glares at her, “Come on, we can stay a little while.” Lin seethes while looking to the side and growling.
------
Aang and Opal stand in the garden, “Okay. Let's see what you've got.”
“I'm not very good.” Opal replies, unsure
“That's okay. Everyone starts somewhere.” Aang gets in an airbending stance, “Keep your elbows in, torso straight, feet just skimming the ground. Why don't you try it with me?”
Opal follows Aang's movements and they circle each other. Soon, both bend out a stream of air which circles them, and they continue their movement.
“Wow! You're a natural!” Aang says
“You really think so? Thanks.” Opal replies with a smile.
------
A female airbender slams against the airbending gates before tumbling out. She rubs her head as Meelo, Daw, Zaheer, and another male airbender look on.
“You call yourself an airbender? Disgraceful!” Meelo says sternly. He sternly points to the gates, prompting Daw to run in with no greater success.
Meelo leans over a prone Daw, “Be the leaf!”
“But, I don't even know what that means.” Daw replies
Zaheer calmly walks past them, causing the duo to look up curiously. He somersaults through the front panels and avoids every other gate. The rest of the group look on in surprise as Kya walks up to them.
Zaheer nimbly avoids the gates, before somersaulting through the final gates. He turns and clasps his hands in respect.
“Now, that man is a leaf.” Meelo says
“A student is only,” He bows, “as good as his master.” Meelo bows respectfully back to Zaheer.
“Great news!” Kya says, ”I just got a message from Tenzin. He's with a whole group of other airbenders at the Northern Temple and he wants all of you to join them.“ Daw and the two other new airbenders smile at the news, “We leave first thing in the morning.”
“And the Avatars are with him?” Zaheer asks
Kya looks at him, slightly confused, “No. Apparently they had to split off from Tenzin.”
“That's unfortunate. I was really looking forward to meeting them.” Zaheer says, disappointed.

Humanity's End
Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.
