Mako stood in the bathroom styling his hair while Bolin brushed his teeth, “So what were you trying to tell me back in Ba Sing Sei?” Mako asked
Bolin stopped brushing his teeth for a couple seconds, “Oh… uh… promise you won’t freak out?”
“Why would I freak out?”
Bolin spits out his toothpaste, “Um… Korra and I… sort of... started dating after I got back from Wulong Forest.”
Mako laughed lightly, “Oh I already know.”
“Wait… you do? How?” Bolin asked, looking at his brother with surprise
“You really think I wouldn’t notice the looks across the room, or the fact that you two have been spending more time with each other.” Mako replied, “I’ve also caught a couple of kisses you two have tried to hide from me.”
“How come you never said anything?”
“Because I knew you’d tell me when you were ready. I’m okay with it, if that’s why you were afraid to tell me.”
Bolin smiled, “So… things aren’t going to be awkward anymore and you’re not going to spend the night at the police station?”
“We’ll see.” Mako replied with a small smile
------
“You know, before I built this city, there was nothing here. I wanted to make my mark on the world.” Suyin said to Aang and Korra who were admiring things around her study
“It's amazing.” Aang said as he turned to her with a smile after admiring a model of Zaofu, “Thank you for being so welcoming.”
“I'm sorry for how Lin's been acting.” Korra said, “Can I ask what happened with you two?”
“It's complicated.” Suyin replied,” We didn't have a normal childhood. Neither of us knew our fathers and Toph was always busy being Chief of Police. Because mom grew up in such a strict household, she gave us all the freedom in the world, hoping we'd figure out our own paths.”

“That sounds like a good thing.”
“And in a way it was. But we both ended up fighting for mom's attention. Lin followed in her footsteps and became a cop. I was... more of a rebel. Mom wasn't too happy with how either of us turned out. When I was sixteen, I left home to explore the world. I sailed the seas on a pirate ship, joined a traveling circus for a while, and lived in a sandbender commune in a desert. It took me a while, but I finally realized what I was looking for was a family. So I bought this plot of land, found a brilliant architect who later became my husband, and created a place I could truly call home.”
“It sounds like you've created the perfect life here.”
“Almost. I've always wanted Lin to be a part of it, but I gave up hope long ago of her ever coming around.”
Aang looked around at all the pictures of Suyin’s travels, “I think Toph would be proud of all this. You left home to travel the world and then built an entire city. That definitely sounds like something Toph would be proud of her own daughter doing, even if she never said it out loud.”
Suyin smiled, “Thank you Aang that means a lot.” She paused before asking, “Now, how exactly did you manage to time travel?”

Korra walks up to Opal who was practicing her airbending, “Wow! You’re a natural!” Korra said with a smile
“Thanks!” Opal replied with a smile
“Do you mind taking a break for a minute? I need your help with something.”
“Yeah sure.” Opal replied

Zaheer walks into Tenzin's study at Air Temple Island. He looks at a small shrine of an Air Nomad and takes the amulet, with a sculpting of Guru Laghima.
He opens the amulet to read the inside inscription, "Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and become wind."

“What are you doing?” Ikki asked, “No one's allowed in Daddy's study except Daddy.”
“I'm sorry. I couldn't sleep.” Zaheer replied
“What were you reading?”
“A poem by Guru Laghima, the wisest airbender who ever lived.”
Kya walks in, interrupting the two of them, “Ikki, you should be in bed. C'mon.”
“Night.” Ikki said before leaving
“Good night.”
Kya looks at Zaheer suspiciously, “You seem to know a lot about airbender history for someone who just got airbending.”
“I've always admired the culture.”
“And you moved through those gates like a natural. Where did you say you were from?”
“A small village up north. You've probably never heard of it.”
“Wait.” Her eyes shoot open as she realizes who he really is, “Zaheer!”
Kya bends the water in the fountain and directs it at Zaheer, who blasts it off with airbending. Kya bends the water around her and shoots ice projectiles at him.
Zaheer takes a staff and smashes the ice projectiles. He leaps out through the window and opens the staff, preparing to escape. Kya leaps out with water tendrils on either arm.
“I need some help!” Kya calls
Kya catches Zaheer with her tendrils, leaping down before slamming him to the fountain. She prepares to freeze him, though Zaheer managed to dodge the attack in the nick of time, having only his leg frozen, which he easily broke through.
Kya bends the water into a wave and rides toward him, directing all the water to Zaheer, but he shields himself with airbending and blows her off. Zaheer prepares to grab his staff, but is blocked by a fire blast.
“Hold it right there!” A White Lotus sentry says
Two sentries direct fire blasts at Zaheer, which he nimbly dodges. Zaheer pulls the staff with airbending, using the staff to block another blast before throwing a blast of air to slam the sentries against the roof of a pavilion.
Kya, who has regained consciousness, bends the water to surround herself, before directing a strong blast toward Zaheer. Zaheer dodges the blast and sends a large air blast to Kya, slamming her against the wall, knocking her out.
“Sorry, I won't be joining you at the Northern Air Temple. I'm afraid I have other plans.” Zaheer says before opening his staff and flying off.
------
Lin sits in her room reading a newspaper when she hears a knock on her door, “Who is it?”
“Hey, it's me.” Korra says from behind the door. Lin stands and opens the door, “I brought someone who wants to talk to you.” Opal appears behind the door.
“You want to talk? Then talk.” Lin says
“I'm sorry being here has been so hard for you.” Opal begins, “When you showed up, I was so excited to get to know you. I heard so many great things about you from mom and Grandma Toph. So, I guess I was kind of sad you didn't want to know me.” Lin looks on, annoyed, “Believe me, I know my family can be a little crazy and overwhelming sometimes. But I would love it so much if you would be a part of it.”
“Get out.”
“Sorry, did I say something wrong?” Opal asked, a little shocked
“Get out!” Lin yells, seething
Opal tears up and runs away. Korra looks on helplessly and approaches Lin, “What's your problem? Don't get mad at Opal. I asked her to talk to you because I thought it would help you snap out of whatever funk you're in. But I guess I was wrong.”
“Why don't you focus on fixing the world, and stop trying to fix my family?”
“Su's right. You're never going to change. You're always gonna be a bitter, lonely woman.” Korra storms out of the room.
Lin puts her hand on her face as a tear runs down her cheek.

Humanity's End
Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.
