《GITA: The Hero Conspiracy》28. Mad Woman

The bridges ceased after a while. A long, wooden staircase led to the bottom of the mine, sticking close to the walls.
The further down they went, the more a black mist began to obstruct their vision. It looked unnatural, something that chaos would create.
To their surprise, there did not seem to be any monsters. The few they met were all dead, their bodies destroyed in the most brutal fashion.
Gabriel leaned down to one of the corpses. He touched the zombie's blood and it was still warm.
"Someone is near." Gabriel thought aloud.
The corpses around him slowly dispersed into a cloud of blue pixels. They reached into the dark and disappeared from the face of this earth.
As they gazed at the blue cloud, something echoed throughout the mine. It was a loud bang that arose just ahead of them.
"Was that… a shotgun?" Naomi whispered as they slowly approached the source of the sound.
The shotgun blast was followed by the roaring of a chainsaw, and the painful cries of whichever zombie it was used on.
As they crept forward, a figure began to form in the dark. It was a young girl. She wore a long, orange skirt and a black crop top that concealed all but her tiny belly button.
Her eyes were colored with crimson blood, a total contrast to her pure white hair, which was dirty from the innards of her enemies.
Two gloves secured her hands as she pummeled a fire axe into a zombie's back, and her two steel boots were perfect for stomping on said monster's head.
Gabriel watched with awe the girl's savage display. She fought three zombies all at once while continuously swapping out her weapons.
She took a large knife from under her skirt and stabbed it into a zombie's throat.

As the other tried to bite her, she dodged under the attack, grabbed the chainsaw hanging from her side, and forcefully dissected the monster's chest.
The third one tried to spray acid on her, but she kicked the monster off balance and impaled a screwdriver in its head as it fell.
"Woah…" Naomi was baffled by the girl's display. "She is so skilled despite being so young! How old is she? Sixteen? Seventeen?"
The girl breathed heavily. She reattached the chainsaw onto her side, the axe to her back, and the smaller tools under her skirt. She wiped the sweat and blood off of her face and let out a relieved sigh.
The two boys exited their hiding spot and approached the girl.
"Hey!" Gabriel waved to the girl. "That was some good work back there. Are you an adventurer? We are here to––"
The girl looked unphased by the two strangers, however, as she saw the Sigil on Naomi's hand, a switch went off in her brain.
She reached under her skirt and pulled out a sharp knife, that she threw straight before the duo's feet.
Naomi recoiled with a squeal.
"Gaah!" He clung to Gabriel with fear. "What the hell is wrong with her?"
The girl's blank expression turned into a bloodthirsty smile. A flame lit up in her eyes, beaming a maddened gaze at the two.
"What do we have here? Two little heroes?" She licked the sides of her mouth. "Oh, jolly day! They are just my favorite meal!"
Naomi felt a shiver run up his spine. This girl looked like a total psycho. If anything, she reminded him of the serial killers he used to see on the news.
However, Gabriel was more confused. He did not reach for his weapon, because he did not feel the adrenaline pump that one should get from a ferocious predator.

"What is wrong with this girl?" He thought to himself, as he forced his hand onto the rapier.
The girl cocked her head to one side and gazed at Gabriel with a child-like amusement.
"Huuuh? Do you plan on fighting me instead of running away?"
She pulled forth her chainsaw and revved up the beast!
"Alright then! Let's see what the innards of your skull look like!"
Naomi brought forth his grimoire. He had to be extra careful about what spell he casts because the wooden planks below them were extra old and fragile.
Gabriel grabbed the handle of his weapon. He grasped it firmly between his fingers, readying for an assault.
"Okay!" The girl raised her roaring chainsaw. "Remember this! 'Chucky, the Psychopath' was the one who sent you into hell!"
The girl burst forward with a crazed laugh. Naomi had no time to prepare his spell, as he had to dodge the girl's attack.
Gabriel too jumped away, despite having a clear sight of the girl's throat.
The chainsaw swooped to the left, then to the right, just barely missing the two.
"Shit!" Naomi ran further up the stairs. "I need a safe distance to focus my spell!"
Gabriel danced between her blades. The chainsaw went by his shoulder, towards his side, then close to his waist. He danced between her attacks with a troubled frown, still bothered by the girl's unusual aura.
"Come on, you bloody bastard!" Chucky yelled as she reached for the axe on her back.
The blade came down straight towards Gabriel, but he easily dodged the attack. Furthermore, he sidestepped in such a way that brought him behind the girl.
"Huuuh?" Chucky turned around, angrily gritting her teeth. "Do you think you are funny?"
Gabriel gazed at her with a straight face. He did not say anything.
"Fine then!" Chucky pulled out her sawed-off shotgun. "Have you ever had a taste of this?"
At that moment, three brown lights appeared behind her. They were small, bird-looking disks that flew around Naomi's head.
"Now!" He shouted, signaling to Gabriel.
Chucky was caught off-guard. She lowered her weapon as she glanced back at Naomi, which gave Gabriel enough time to spring into motion.
Before Chucky could have realized it, Gabriel was already an arm's length before her. His rapier pointed straight at her, and for a moment, Chuckie could see death up close.
"I don't want to die." Was the only thing she could think about at that moment.
The three tectonic birds flew straight at her back, aiming at her heart and two lungs.
Clank! Clank! Clank!
Air escaped her lungs as the three projectiles hit her back. Or rather, something that was behind her.
Her numbing fear slowly disappeared and an immense shock appeared in its place.
"How am I still alive?" She wanted to ask, but only the first words escaped her mouth.
Gabriel's hands were wrapped around her back. The cold rapier rested in his hands after it deflected all three of the tectonic birds.
Gabriel saved the girl.
Raising his voice in the distance, Naomi awkwardly broke the silence.
"D-Did we get her?" He asked with confusion in his voice. He could not see anything in the dark.

Iron and Wood - A Tale Of Empire and Clans
For centuries, the Midlands had been split into fragments. A once glorious, united Empire has become a shadow of its former self. Unity has not returned, and not for the lack of trying. The greatest of these successor states were the Li Dynasty to the south, the rulers of old, and the Emerald Empire to the North, with its vibrant vitality. Unity is the end goal, and both will sacrifice anything to attain this elusive dream. For unity would surely solve the conflict that had long plagued this once prosperous continent. The Ironwood Clan was a prime player. Some would consider them the ones holding the reigns to the horse named 'Unification'. Iron and wood were the backbones of civilization; similarly, the Ironwoods were the backbones of the Northern Empire, and by extension, the people of the Midlands. Their methods, as questionable as they might be, had strengthened the North. Yet, were they enough? In the midst of it all, a young Ironwood who had lost his path must once again find his way. For the sake of his own wellbeing; for the sake of his clan; and for the sake of the Empire and its subjects. However, is he willing to sacrifice for the good of all? Is he willing to condemn some for the sake of others? Is he willing to make the right, albeit harsh, decisions? Only the heavens would know. Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, events and incidents are the products of the author’s imagination. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. Additionally, any views and beliefs expressed by the characters are not the author's own. The story is also not an endorsement of any actions taken within. The 'profanity' and 'sexual content' warning tags are there to be safe (and to leave room for potential future changes), but for now these two things are not inside this novel. This is my take on 'cultivation', though it might be somewhat disconnected from the general idea of the genre. Release schedule: Two chapters a week. The cover was created using wombo art.
