《Stormdancer Cal》Chapter 2- A shocking discovery

The official continues his speech basically outlining the qualification process, it basically consists of a magic test, a practical knowledge test, and a few small sets of tourneys to see the practical fighting ability of the students. In all honesty, I don't know if I even have magic, much less if I can fight but I’ll figure it out, I always do.
Me and Lucy head towards the magic examination zones, there are so many people around us that we are walking basically hip to hip. A few minutes in Lucy towards to me and starts talking.
“Hey Cal, I’m surprised there are so many people here, it really seems like everyone and their moms came”
“Well duh, of course since the tryouts are free, why wouldn’t you, it could literally change your whole life.”
“Yea I know that, but I mean if you didn’t have any training or some sort of insane strong magic there is no way anyone would do well enough to get in”
“I mean I guess the nobles seem to have a stranglehold on the academy but its hard to say no, ya know”
“Yea without a doubt”
We separated into groups and began the wait for our turns for our magic readings. The readings were done when the officials would send a spike of magic into you which would spark the innate magic inside of you. Its a rather dangerous method but it is truly the only option as people had begun developing magic affinities outside of the base elements, thus making our simplistic magic ball useless. We could see the current magic testee as our individual chambers had raised stages for the test.
For the most part, it had been fairly unimpressive, a low affinity would mean that the magic spark was about the size of a head, and a medium may be a bit bigger than a person. We had yet to see a high affinity, or at least until a young red-headed boy walked up the steps, he had short red hair and golden eyes. He present his chest to the official and as the robed man places his hand upon the boy a huge flame lion aura burst out nearly the size of three people, it possesd a golden radiance that lit up the room. Slowly and smugly as if basking in his own light he walks down the stairs only to have a female with the same hair and eyes walk up in his place. The room is quiet only to have a larger light fill the room this one with hints of silver in its flame, truly awe-inspiring.

For a short while, there is no one impressive until a small seemingly gnome or dwarf girl walks up and a brown glow explodes out. Eventually, it seems as if all the heavy hitters are coming out. A young elf boy comes with a deep azure blue and an even green as well as a sweet smell burst out. A skinny girl steps up the wooden step with uncertainty only for a strong glow of brown and a metallic sheen which seems to vibrate intensely. Some girl with raven black hair comes up and the room glows a dark purple that takes the form of a shifting monster, as everyone seems to squirm in their seats. Eventually, the heavy hitters seem to finish, making me wonder if they were all placed together intentionally. Lucy is up right before me a soft green and blue light greets the room. Finally, it was time for the star of the show, me, to head up slowly I walk up the stairs and see the official he is surprisingly youthful and rather strong-looking as he posses broad shoulders and towers over me, maybe he has some sort of earth affinity I hear they are all huge dudes and dudettes. Slowly the big guy places his hand over my chest and I feel a surge of energy burst into me. From my heart and head, I feel energy begin to radiate, with a thunderclap a royal purple explodes out as a light green and blue swirl around it with varying speeds. A light hum from the official is all I’m greeted with as I begin the trek back to my seat. While sitting I attempt to memorize the flow that came from the spike.
Lucy whispers into my ear “Cal you do know what your affinities are right?”

“I can only guess” I reply quietly knowing my own ignorance “It was probably really great right?”
“Great, more like amazing, You have an incredible affinity for lightning as well as strong ones for both wind and water! Not to mention how it moved you should have a special property as well!” Lucy yells at me, causing the people around us to forget how to mind their damn business.
So quietly that Lucy can barely hear me I mumble out “shit… I’m good.”

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.

Pillars Between Us
It started with the dent left by the Forest Sprite; A small crack in the ice that encased his memories. Curtis knew that something was off, realizing that he wasn’t who he thought he was and— perhaps Ellis wasn’t the one meant for him. --It's a fantasy novel set in a world where people inhabit on pillars-- (think of m*necaft sky block, you'll get what I mean) -- then give it a hint of action, mystery and (twisted) romance-- and it's influenced by Japanese fantasy light novels (cuz I read a lot of em'). But I'm sure it's a weird one cuz the style of writing isn't the Japanese to English translated kind of style but rather the orthodox English novel kind of writing (which includes a bunch of errors and broken English thanks to me!). In any case, if you're up for it, just beware the story starts out pretty slow.. I mean-- back then, I was still inexperienced ok! I'm gettin' better along the way, Hmmph!
