《Rise or Fall》Chapter 6 – Reaching Senthrin

With the partial protection of the wagons and two guards patrolling, the people of the caravan were in relative ease. Members of blue paradise played different songs, merchants told stories from the kingdoms across the world and one dwarf done card tricks. "Now, for the main event of the evening." Bob called to the gathering crowd as he stood on a box behind a small empty lot designated for the upcoming performance "A song dedicated to the two brave men who died tonight. Sang for the first time by a member of the well known Orchid Wheel, Emilia chorus." Emilia stepped out a tent in a marigold dress and began singing.
Joey and Tom
wandered far from home
for the princess of song
whom the lands roam
to lift up the hearts
of those life's monochrome
this is the mission of Joey and Tom.
thou the city is far and path is long
they kept on their watch all night and daylong
for both their mind and heart are strong
and by roaming light-full princess of song
this is the place where they belong.
then the enemy appeared and the fight was hard
to protect the merchants and the princess, the bard
and with heart and soul them they guard
those are Joey and Tom
may their souls rest calm.
When Emilia slithered out of her cocoon of a sleeping bag there were only Bob, Gerry and three passengers awake. "Good morning, princess." Bob called to Emilia from his post. "Was there any sightings during the night?" Emilia asked as she stretched her back and hands in the silky lilac nightgown. "If there were, you and your friends would be the second to hear of it, after my men, of course." Emilia crouched down and picked up her backpack as two red spots on her neck and red and white lines on her back peeking from the fabric of the gown. "I'm going for a moment to wash my face." Emilia said as she disappeared between the trees, heading to the nearby river.
When Emilia returned to the caravan in her ember dress and leather armor, most of the wagons and carts were lined up and ready for travel and the people were tidying up their sleeping solutions or eating their breakfast. Emilia picked up her sleeping bag and strapping her rapier and dagger to her armor belt. As she finished preparing, people were in the midst of climbing to various wagons and seven people were huddling. Emilia joined the guards and Bolvar, Henry and Rolen as they were discussing sitting arrangements for the next day of traveling. "I'll sit with the guards in the front." Bolvar claimed and was cut from giving positions to the others by Henry. "I'll sit in the back." Then, as Rolan opened his mouth to speak, a roar was heard and a second and third.
Up above soared through the sky shadowy figures with long tails and wings. They were hard to properly see from that distance, but Emilia could not have mistaken the shape of this dragonic beast. "A-a-are tho-those d-d-d-dragons? A-are we-we goonna die?" One of the passengers asked in a wavering and cracking voice. "The wyverns don't seem to care about us, but they are moving west. Why always west?" Emilia said as she looked up at the pack/ Henry pointed at the wyverns and asked "Are there people on the wyverns?" Emilia squinted her eyes, "I don't see anything." Icarus flown up to the figures and Henry stated "There are people with horns riding the wyverns."

The ride from there was quite, a few of Blue paradise scattered themselves across the caravan, trying to lift the people's spirit, but even with the comfort of the music, no man nor woman dared say a word for if the wyverns will return. In this silence Emilia played songs for one of the passenger wagons at the back of the caravan. Henry and Rolen joined traveling traders and, as Emilia watched from the window, they were keeping their eyes on the sky. Bolvar was sitting at the front with the guards. This bleak atmosphere floats over the caravan until they finally reached Senthrin at late afternoon.
Wood logs of varying length stuck in the ground, sometimes at odd angles and with sizable gaps, made the makeshift wall surrounding the fishing town. by the opening stood two young men, a dwarf and a halfling, each holding a fishing spear, it was clear that none of them know how to fight. The caravan went through without asking questions and in complete silence, the sight of the wall and its guards was not very comforting to the scared people of the caravan. "Excuse me, sir, why is there a wall here?" Emilia asked as the wagon passed by the two men. "What do you mean why, didn't you see those flying monsters?" The dwarf almost screamed the words as he was using the spear to hold himself from falling to his shaking knees.
Emilia was the first of her wagon to jump down and as she looked a gnome with a harp almost one and a half his size helped a young lady to get out of the wagon with her baby. "Is everything fine with you, Sharlen? How was your wagon?" Emilia asked as she landed a hand to an old man to get down from the wagon she was in. "Just as monochrome as yours, if I'll borrow your words." "I see." In the relative quietness of the half circle, the passengers of the caravan dispersed to the town streets, disappearing in crowds and behind turns and only a few thanking Emilia, Bolvar, Bob and his men and the members of Blue Paradise, who helped everyone to get out.
Emilia, Rolen, Henry and Bolvar stood by an empty cart, the passengers have all disappeared by this point and the merchants who stay in town to sell their wares have mostly finished setting up. "So, we're in Senthrin, what now?" Emilia asked as she looked at the empty lot surrounded with flimsy makeshift walls. Bolvar was the one to answer. "Well, I think we should find a place to rest, Emilia. Emilia? Not again." "There she is." Henry pointed at Emilia. "Go get her Icarus." The pygmy owl flapped his wings and soared above the lot before landing on Emilia's head. "Oh, hello." Was all she managed to say before Icarus started flapping his wing on the sides of her head. "Hey, hey, stop it. I'll return in a moment.
Emilia walked to a small stall that stood in a corner of the lot, by an old, half broken, wooden barn. She squeaked between what seem to be two locals holding mugs of brown liquid to the stall they stood by, ignoring the pygmy owl flapping no her face. "What do you have here?" The old halfling smiled at her with a few missing teeth. "I have ale here." Emilia looked at the unwashed mugs containing the brown liquor and thought of the Blue Moon Beer she had once and how good it was despite it's look.

"How much for four mugs of ale?" The smile on Emilia's face wavered for a moment when the old man said it will be four copper, sliding four mugs towards her. "Do you have change from a gold coin, perhaps?" the halfling took an old coin sack and started filling it with dozens of copper coins. Emilia returned to her friends, two mugs in each hand. "Here's one for you, and one for Henry and last one for you." Rolen looked at the muddy looking drink in his hand and then at his compatriots, waiting to see their reactions. "I don't like to alcohol." Henry said as Icarus sips from his mug and freeze, his feathers stand on end. Bolvar spited the brown liquid as Emilia almost threw up after swallowing. "Well, I did par this." Emilia drinks the rest of the mug in one swing, and fall, crushing to the ground.
After Bolvar picked up the unconscious Emilia, he, Henry and Rolen went to the small inn in town, led by a local. The sign above the door read Early Inn Early Out. In the small inn's foyer stood a few people, some of them recognizable from the caravan. Bolvar set Emilia in a small sofa and went to procure rooms for the night. "Please don't, I don't want to lose you again." Emilia mumbled in disturbed sleep. The halfling behind the counter extended his hand to Bolvar. "It will be one gold coin per room, all four of you is four gold coins."
Bolvar took two gold coins from the coin bag tied to his belt and marked to the two men behind him to pay up as well. "Here are the keys, four rooms on the second floor, the rooms' numbers on the keys." Bolvar returned to the sofa and attempted to pick up Emilia but as he touched her she screamed a name, Ronen, and startled him. Bolvar picked her up and took her upstairs, he laid her on the bed in one room and placed her backpack on the bedside, leaning on the small table where he lay the room's key.
Bolvar walked among the trees of the nearby forest, relaxing from caring about Emilia and the wyvern riders. "Who are you?" He asked suddenly looking into the canopy. "Didn't think you'll find my, sweet. Color me surprised." A woman's head with bright red hair and two small red horns appear from between the branches. Bolivar unsheathed his longsword and pointed it at the tree from which the woman descended, revealing her bat like demonic wings and improperly revealing clothes. "No need to wave that stick around, it won't give you better dreams." Bolvar spoke without lowering his sword. "So you're the one who makes those nightmares, stop!" She looked at him from the branch she set on an giggled. "I fear I'm not allowed to do that, but I can make them more fun, if you want." Bolvar moved to a point where he can see the demoness better.
"Why are you surrounded by the same flames as Rolen?" The woman looked at bolvar, amused smile on her face. "Why indeed, do you think? But if we speak of him, don't go telling Rolen and your other friends, it's not very endearing." Bolvar glared at her as she jumped to the ground and taken a single suggestive step toward him. "What do you want from us?" She took another step towards Bolvar as he started walking backwards. "Mostly watching, but there is something you can do for me. You see, I'm looking for someone, an alchemist with blue flames." "Why would I help you." Bolvar back hit the tree and the demoness closed in to just beyond strike distance. "I can make it profitable, now, if you'll excuse me." She stepped back, disappearing from sight.
After the few street torches of Senthrin were lit, a person opened the door. He was clad in black and had the face of a person older than him, stepping inside the room, highlighted by the open window. He stepped silently to the bed, careful not to step on the backpack. As he came to touch her shoulder, Emilia flinched, yet remained asleep. He turned her so her face is to the ceiling and send a hand to his pocket, from which a tiny creature appear, looking at the man with judgmental eyes. The man step back as the illusions on his face are fading to reveal Rolen's face. The sprite nodes in approval as Rolen take something from his pocket. Suddenly his eyes jump to the owl sitting on the open window sill, watching him silently without moving. Rolen returns his focus to Emilia and finish the mark on her forehead before leaving Icarus to perch alone on the window sill.

March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.
