《Mixing Blood》15. The Key that Binds Us

Vessuillus plucked his wife young, and beautiful like the ripest bud from his brother’s garden. Cassandra Miriam was her name; a strong, wild and brilliant woman that demons and gods alike would envy. The eldest princesses of the Aseret family that he never asked anything of, but to exist in her presence and a child. A child to solidify his power within her and the rest of the world.
A baby. A child. A son. Their heir to rule the future in their name, but after a year of trying still no fruit. Admittedly Vess was more than satisfied with the trying process, but soon question would give rise to animosity if no child appeared.
A year later, Vessuillus believed his prayers had been answered when Cassandra Miriam began feeling extremes amount of pains in her abdomen. the doctors confirmed his hopes, she was indeed pregnant, but could not find a reason for the agony that persisted and grew as the days passed nor could they fix it or lesson it with any amount of magic or medicine. She was bound to her chambers for the whole of the pregnancy being able to eat only fruits and soup. None of the pain was too much for her to bear as long as her little warrior survived. She repeated it day in and out like her personal mantra.
She was so certain that it would be healthy, powerful baby boy that even Vess began to become giddy and equally sure this child will be the only true Fangaria left in the world. A terrible rainstorm engulf the kingdom and with first strike of lighting the future of Fangaria was ready for its grand entrance. "Already cocky before birth," Cassandra cooed to the unborn child. "Two months, not your time just yet little one," but pain became so sever, contractions so close together, old medicine could do nothing but let the child be.

Vess called all the older maids and midwifes to handle his heir with care. She was in labor the whole of the day. Vess couldn't bare the sounds of his wife screams as they waited to the point of gnawing discomfort at this new life. "Not yet," he would whispered, "No not yet. I'm not ready for you just yet."
On the last hour of the day he was born and he was a he. The first to hold him was his father.
"Vess why do he not cry?" Cassandra still weak from the birth did not have enough energy to scream. She let her head fall to the nearest woman. "Elizabeth does my baby cry? I cannot hear. Please tell me." Elizabeth: the older woman, heavy armed woman attempted to console Cassandra by gently patting her head.
Quickly Vessuillus wrapped his child wondering the same: why does he not cry. “Gilbert," he named him without thought. "Speak child," and at that moment the smallest baby opened it eyes long enough to defy its father and breathe its only breath. Somehow Cassandra knew her son would be making no sound today. She closed her eyes letting sleep engulf her. She had hoped just like her child she would not open her eyes again.
Later that evening, the smallest shrine was built for a king that never was: King Gilbert Fangaria. This small shrine with three words and one date was her trigger to for escaping reality. She was unable to protect any of her children. Her bright demeanor faded to a near grey, her beauty became brittle and harsh on the edges, and her intellect was never heard from by anyone again. Two years later on the anniversary of their son’s death Vess decided he wanted his beautiful wife back. Shortly after Elizabeth Mara Fangaria, born of sorrow would be born. Immediately she would show off her powerful lungs and let her voice be heard. She was no son but she shared some of her life with her mother, after nearly four years Cassandra lived again. Thus she was able to see so many things that was forgotten. Her husband who hadn't aged since Gilbert’s birthday. His first son Alex who barely seemed a year older since he first meet him five years ago. She looked around at her court some was missing, some was new, but of those who stayed, stayed the same. She felt something was off. She looked up at Vess and he understood. He kissed her on the forehead. "This is your family my love."

"My family," she question.
"Yes, your son Alexander Leoessa Fangaria. Me your husband for many years, our new child, and the servants and ladies you have known all your life."
She looked down at Alex, nearly the splitting image of his father and took him in as if it was her very first time seeing him. "My baby." The boy would not look at her, he could not yet lie to her face. "...My little prince."
six years later there was no time for Cameron's curiosity even if he was extraordinary standing on his own at 15 weeks because before his next birthday Gabriel and moments later Gabriella was born causing mischief on their first day. Instead of crying they both simply stared and yawned. Once put near one another they held hands.

Fateless: The Silver Lining
It has been ten years of peace for the Union since the end of the great war with the eastern barbarian tribes, yet in the cold north of the Union's land, a new threat is looming. This time, an ambitious Lord is seeking to restore the yore pride of his kin, forcing the weakened Union into yet another unwanted war, as he ramps up the ranks of his army with thieves, murderers and mercenaries.* * *The temperature inside the forge was nearly twice as high as the one outside. A black-haired girl hammered a steel ingot into the shape of a blade. The heat of the steam was draining her stamina away, but her focus remained sharp as her sweat streamed down her face. Hit after hit, for hours, the sound of the hammering steel followed the rhythm of her breathing. Exhausted, she placed the blade into the water and wiped the sweat off her face using a drenched rag. Why are they screaming? Vatra dipped the rag back in the water, twisted it, and approached the window. Her mouth opened as her world shattered again into the living nightmare she had wilfully tried to forget. She bit her lips; it wasn’t a dream. The pulse of her heart rose. A cold sweat prickled her back. A mother was running, and a child was screaming. A torrent of smoke was emerging from the roof of her neighbour. Vatra’s eyes blinked. The mother lay on the ground, a spear through her back. A torch circled in the air and landed on the roof of her workshop. In the distance, a man wearing a banner well known to the world… Fateless is a philosophical medieval dark low fantasy centered on war, militaristic campaigns and geopolitical conflicts between multiple empires. This story follows the fate of Vatra, a former slave from the eastern Nar Empire who was raised in a culture far away from her own, forced into warfare against her will, and the fate of Lanaya, an ambitious half-angel exiled from her home whose existence is seen as heresy. As they wished for peace, both chose a path opposed to one another until their fate crossed. In this story where war dictates the law, love strikes them as a poisoned balm to which they grasp for with all their might, as it is in the darkest of times that the smallest flames may burn the brightest. * * * Tome 1 already completed and available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Fateless-Silver-Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot/dp/B09LGSH1KK Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot-100547579135891/ I will publish 1 chapter per week (sometimes 2 if the chapters are too short for my liking).
