《It's Hard to be a Hero in a Parallel World》1.3 Becoming an Adventurer, QUEST: Find a Way Home

Part 1
“Haha! Did you see the looks on their faces when we got away.”
The troublesome girl I was carrying on my back acted as if she did anything to help.
I barely got out of there without getting caught by the guards, but now I have yet another problem.
What am I gonna do with this excess baggage?
“Hey lady, I really have to get going. Do you have somewhere I can drop you off.”
“Yeah. My house is a few blocks away. Drop me off there.”
“Alright. I guess it is the least I can do.”
Once I get rid of this girl, I need to figure out what to do next.
There’s gotta be some way for me to get back home.
I made this great escape but I really have no idea where to even start.
There’s also the oncoming demon army I need to think about.
It should be fine to leave it to the professionals.
Heroine-chan, and a handful of other guys in this world have power on par with the Hero.
They'll be able to do something about the demons, even if I’m not there.
While I was lost in thought, the girl was trying to get my attention.
“Kid. Hey Kid!”
“Huh? What?”
“Take that turn up there.”
“Ok.”
“Kid let me ask you something?”
“What’s up?”
“Who are you? You seem a bit stronger than I originally thought?”
“Uh… My name is Hero-kun. I’m just a passing adventurer.”
“Oh Hero-kun? Hm… I actually met someone named Hero-kun earlier today.”
What?
She knows about the real me.
She wasn’t there at the summoning, but she was lurking around the castle for some reason.
Was she at the feast?
I seem to remember a certain table causing more commotion than the others.
She’s not a knight though, and she’s definitely does not seem very priestlike.
The girl started questioning me some more.
“Well Hero-kun… what were you doing at the castle tonight?”
Crap I don’t have any good excuses.
“Uh… uh… I’m a sleepwalker. I accidentally sleepwalked from the inn and ended up - OUCH!”
The girl headbutted me in the back of my skull.
“What the hell was that for?”
“Make up a more believable lie at least idiot. Sleepwalking? The inn is way too far! Besides, something special happened at the castle today! A weakling like you wouldn’t even be able to get in. And if you’re really an adventurer show me some respect. I’m a seasoned adventurer in this town.”
“Hey stop calling me weak! I seem to remember that you gave up during our last fight, and then started crying, begging me to carry you!”
“That doesn’t count you idiot! You hurt my leg before we even started. That’s cheating!”
“Oh so miss super strong adventurer is making excuses huh! You can’t lose and then start complaining after the fact. I’m even helping you out here, so you should be grateful - OUCH! Stop hitting me!”
This girl is so annoying.
I should have just left her for the guards.
We walked up to a tiny wooden shack.
“We’re here.”
The girl gave me the key to her home and we went inside.
Her “house” was almost completely empty.
There was only one room.
She didn’t even have a bed or a fridge.
There was only a couch in the middle of the room, and some other little furniture.

“Put me down here. Go and grab me a healing potion. It should be in one of those drawers.”
I put her down on the couch and walked over to the cabinets.
Inside there were a few bottles containing some blue liquid.
So this little bottle has healing potion in it.
It looks just like the item from Light World.
Judging from its color, it's just a basic level potion.
I brought it back to the girl and sat down on the coffee table next to it.
“Here you go.”
“Thanks.”
Woah!
She drank the potion and her leg started shining.
So this is how healing works in this world.
“Hey Hero-kun stop staring so much. I know I’m beautiful so it wouldn’t surprise me that you have fallen for me, but you’re being a big pervert.”
Now that she mentions it, she’s got a pretty face.
Her blue hair and colored eyes are unnatural in my world but it looks really nice.
She’s thin and has great proportions too.
Unfortunately, I have no interest in an airhead like her.
“Hey! I’m not a pervert! I had just never seen a healing potion at work.”
“Oh an adventurer who hasn’t seen a healing potion before. How unusual.”
Crap, I’ve messed up my story again.
I hope she doesn’t realize who I am.
The girl sat up on the couch.
“If you really are an adventurer, let me see your adventurer’s card.”
Damn.
I threw my card away before I fell out of the castle window.
“Uh… I lost it. Hey!”
The girl flicked me on the forehead
“I told you to stop lying you idiot.”
I’m not lying this time though.
“Gosh Hero-kun. You are all kinds of trouble. I guess it can’t be helped. I’ll look after you for a while.”
“What do you mean?”
The girl got up from the couch and started digging around in the corner.
“You really want to be an adventurer right. Well tomorrow, I’ll show you the ropes on how to become a real one just like me. Treat it as a thank you for getting me home.”
“Uh… ok.”
She walked back over to me and handed me a blanket.
“Here. It’s already pretty late so you can sleep here tonight.”
“Thanks.”
The girl plopped back onto the couch and I lied down on the floor at its feet.
We just met yet she’s going out of her way to help me out.
Judging from her house though, she should probably worry more about herself.
Haha.
I guess this idiot is pretty nice.
“Hey, I don’t know your name.”
“Oh yeah. I’m Adventurer-chan. Feel free to call me Adventurer-san.”
“Hah. I don’t think so.”
“Haha. At least be a little grateful Hero-kun. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the guild hall to register as an adventurer. I’ll even take you on a quest if you want. You can join my party.”
Hm.
I still didn’t have a plan on what to do next.
Should I become an adventurer?
It does seem a bit dangerous.
Still, the adventurer’s guild’s network is so vast that I might be able to find some more information about how to get home.
Living the life of an adventurer could be fun.
Fame, fortune, friendship.
All things I seemed to lack back in my home world.
Being an adventurer is also the only part of “Light World” I haven't fully explored.

I never was one to do side quests in games.
Plus I won’t have any responsibility to fight the demons, unlike if I were still the hero.
“Alright Adventurer-chan. I’ll be looking forward to it.”
Huh?
She’s already asleep.
Who falls asleep in the middle of a conversation?
Oh well, I guess I’ll follow her lead.
Tomorrow is the beginning of my new life in this fantasy world.
I slept through the night.
…
Yawn!
It was already light outside.
I rolled over onto my back.
I could see Adventurer-chan drooling on the couch.
Looks like starting my new adventuring life will have to wait a little bit longer.
I didn’t mind though.
Normally, I play on my phone for an hour before getting up every morning.
Although I don’t have a phone anymore in this world.
I’ll make do by playing with this dust bunny.
Being productive so early in the morning is overrated.
While I was lazing around, I heard the voice of an angry old lady knocking at the door.
“Knock-knock! Adventure-chan! Wake up!”
Yawn!
The knocking woke up Adventurer-chan.
“Uh… what’s that noise?”
The banging on the door continued.
“Open up Adventurer-chan! I know you’re in there!”
“Hey Adventurer-chan! Go answer the door. They’re ruining my early morning meditation - OOF! Hey I’m down here! Watch where you’re stepping!”
“Be quiet Hero-kun! She’ll hear you.”
She ran to the door and looked through the peephole.
“I can hear you in there! You’re late on the rent again!”
Adventurer-chan started running around the house and grabbing a bunch of items.
I decided to cut my morning ritual short and stood up.
“Hey Adventurer-chan. What’s going on?"
“Get ready Hero-kun! It’s time for another one of our great escapes!”
“Huh?”
“Hyaah!”
Adventurer-chan kicked open the door and we rushed past her landlord.
“Hey you two get back here!”
Part 2
I will say, although I don’t love the idea of being in this dangerous world, seeing it in real life is awesome.
After escaping from the evil landlady, Adventurer-chan and I were on our way to the adventurer’s guild.
We walked through the cobblestone streets of town.
There were item shops, black smiths, taverns and different races walking all around town.
Light World really nailed the fantasy look.
We arrived at a huge building.
“Here we are Hero-kun. This is the adventurer’s guild.”
Adventurer-chan showed me around.
There were food and drinks, rowdy adventurers, a quest board, and everything else you would expect from an adventurer’s guild.
“Alright Hero-kun, now to get you registered as an adventurer.”
We walked upstairs.
We met with a blonde woman who looked a few years older than me.
She wore black stockings, a beige coat with the guild emblem on the right side of the chest, and woah those are huge.
“Oh Adventurer-chan! I’m surprised to see you with a friend. Who is this young man?”
“Hi Guildmaster. This is my new party member. He wants to be an adventurer.”
So this woman is the guild master.
“Hello. My name is Hero-kun. I came to register as an adventurer.”
“A newbie huh! Well, registration is really fast. I will create and adventurer’s card for you and give you some basic level equipment. To cover everything, it will be 1000 gold.”
No one mentioned anything about needing money until now and I doubt Adventurer-chan has any.
“Uh sorry I actually don’t have any money.”
“Well that’s not a big deal. Many new adventurers can’t pay the registration fee at first. They hope to be adventurers as their main source of income. Some of the rewards from the first few quests you complete will go to paying off your debt.”
“Oh alright.”
“Now then, grab onto this on this.”
Guild master brought out a blank adventure’s card.
I put my hand on it and once again it filled itself out.
Adventurer: Hero-kun Age: 20 Height: 173cm Weight: Average
Job: Adventurer Level: 1 Stats: Avg - Below Avg. Low Magic stat.
Huh?
My job has changed and my stats have all lowered by a bit.
“Congrats Hero-kun you are now officially an adventurer. As the beginner job, you now have access to some basic spells and abilities. Once you level up a bit, you’ll be able to change your job and even unlock stronger abilities.”
“Wow. Your stats are lower than I originally thought Hero-kun. Pfft. Guess you are a weakling after all. Hahaha!”
“Hey! Let’s see your stats if you’re gonna be cocky about it.”
“Sure.”
Adventurer-chan pulled out her card.
Adventurer: Adventurer-chan Age: 20 Height: 172cm Weight: (Hidden)
Job: Mage Level: 5 Stats: Avg - Above Avg. High Magic Magic Stat
This idiot is actually stronger than me.
Damn this is no fair.
What the hell happened to all of my stats!
“Don’t feel bad Hero-kun. I have registered many adventurers in this guild. I’ve seen people with low stats become great adventurers.”
“Yeah Hero-kun, don’t worry. If you work hard, maybe one day, you can be just as strong as me.”
This sucks.
“Now then. Since you’re a newbie, I’ll give you your first quest. Work hard and complete more quests. I’m sure you two will surely be able to repay the 20 thousand gold if you work together.”
“Wait what? I thought it was 1000 gold.”
“Yes the registration fee is 1000 gold. However, when you add up the unpaid tab your partner has racked up, your party owes 20 thousand.”
What!
I glared at Adventurer-chan.
“Hey. Why do we have so much debt?”
“Being adventurers is hard on the wallet sometimes. You have to make sure everyone has the right equipment and supplies. Don’t worry though Hero-kun. You are now part of the strongest adventuring party in town. We can clear this debt in no time.”
“I guess that makes sense. It will be easier if we have a large group working together. Who else is in our adventuring party?”
“It’s just you and me. - Ouch! What was that for?”
“What the hell have you been doing! How do you rack up that much debt on your own! Equipment for one person doesn’t cost that much!”
“Adventurers like to party a lot and you don’t want to get left out of those! And sometimes you have to treat some of your poor guildmates!”
“You’re the poor guildmate you idiot!”
“Don’t call me an idiot you weakling!”
We started scuffling in the guild master’s office.
“Excuse me. Hey. Hey! … CUT IT OUT!”
Guildmaster hit us both on the head.
“Ouch!” x2
Yikes this woman has a scary side to her.
“Here. This is your first quest, it shouldn’t be difficult for two people. Now get going. I expect to see you by the end of the day.”
“Yes Mam.” x2

Hazelsong: A LitRPG Novel
Release Schedule: I will be moving to a set release schedule as of 1/1/2022. A new chapter will be released every Saturday at Noon EST. If I have time that week for a second chapter, I will leave a note on the Saturday chapter and post the second chapter on Sunday at Noon EST. An up to date character sheet for the MC Erik will also be posted on Sundays at 12:15 PM. If life happens and I am for some reason unable to write that week, I will post a blank chapter giving you an update on where I am with my writing. Saturday Noon EST: First weekly chapter Sunday Noon EST: Second weekly chapter (if I have the time) Sunday 12:15 EST: Updated character sheet Synopsis: Years after surviving a deadly accident, Erik struggles to come to terms with his painful disability. When offered the chance to playtest the world's first full immersion VRMMO, he wants nothing more than to retreat back into his secluded life, until he learns what Hazelsong really offers. An escape from the pain. Hazelsong is a world of magic and adventure, a place where friendships are formed, loot is won, and glory and fame are there for the taking. While the threats feel real and the stakes are always high, there is only one thing Erik is really in danger of. Forgetting which world is actually real. Story Themes: Hazelsong is a LitRPG novel that not only explores the fictional world of a realistic online fantasy realm but the life of a man suffering in silence from chronic pain and PTSD due to a significant physical injury and disability. Mental health is an important subject and we all know at least one person in our lives who has or is dealing with some form of mental illness. I plan on putting my best effort forward to represent these illnesses in a fair and accurate manner. Not as a cheap plot device to help make the protagonist more unique, but to help paint an accurate picture for those of us who have been lucky enough to not have to suffer in silence. About the Author: I am Ash Durra, general video game nerd and a connoisseur of fantasy and sci-fi of all shapes and sizes. Needless to say, I am not a professional author (B.S. and M.S. in Education, 8 years teaching). After really getting into LitRPG novels over the past several years, I found my way to Royal Road, which has inspired me to use my spare time to begin writing a story of my own creation. As this is a hobby, I am not writing and posting chapters on any kind of specific schedule at the moment, though my goal is to post on average 1-2 chapters a week. I am incredibly excited to share this story with others as I write it, and I look forward to any constructive feedback about how I can improve in my writing.
