《It's Hard to be a Hero in a Parallel World》1.4 Don't Mess With Slimes, or Heroes

Part 1
QUEST: SLAY 20 SLIMES
Adventurer-chan and I went outside the town gates.
We were in the middle of a huge grass field with forests and mountains in the distance.
Perfect for a first area in a game.
I thought this quest would be pretty easy.
Slimes are always the weakest monsters in every game.
Unfortunately I was also one of the weakest people in the game too.
“OOF!”
A slime tackled me right in the stomach!
Fighting with a sword was way harder than I thought.
I went in for another slash.
“Dammit. Stop dodging you stupid slime.”
“Hurry it up Hero-kun. If Guildmaster yells at us again, it’ll be your fault. I’ll make you treat me for dinner.”
Heroine-chan was lying down, relaxing in the distance.
“Hey! You’re just sitting around! Why don’t you try helping out!”
“What do you mean? I am helping you out! You’re only level 1! I’m letting you have all of this exp. Look at you! Your having trouble with a little slime! You need all the exp you can get!”
She’s right.
I have no grace with the sword.
I should be able to kill the slime no problem, if I could just land a hit.
“Alright then Ms. seasoned adventurer, give me some tips will ya!”
“Hehe finally realizing how cool your senpai is huh. I guess I’ll teach you some stuff. First try this. Next try this!”
We spent most of the day teaching me how to fight.
I ended up feeling a lot more comfortable with the sword.
Even as an airhead mage, Adventurer-chan really knew her stuff.
“Hah!”
I slashed a slime in half.
“Alright that's the nineteenth kill. You just have to find one more Hero-kun.”
We searched around the area.
“Hey look over there Adventurer-chan. There’s a group of slimes over there!”
“Hold up Hero-kun. Stay clear of those slimes! Wait Hero-kun come back!”
I had already started running towards the slimes.
“What? I can’t hear you from over there! I’m just gonna beat one more slime real quick then we can go back.”
I caught up to the slimes and sliced one of them up.
“Hyaah!”
HERO-KUN LEVEL UP!
Ooh that last slime gave me enough exp to hit level 2.
Gloop! Gloop! Gloop!
“Hero-kun get out of there!”
Adventure-chan was running towards me panicked.
“What do you mean?”
I turned around and I understood why she told me to run!
“Aah! What the hell!”
The remaining slimes came together to form a Giant Slime.
It was as big as a building.
Welp, Time to run!
“Aaaaaah!”
I booked it towards Adventurer-chan.
“Idiot. I told you not to go over there.”
“I know, I know. Just save me!”
I ran behind Heroine-chan.
Even without a weapon, she took a fighting pose.
“Alright hero-kun, watch and learn. Check out how cool your senpai is. WATER!”
A huge pillar of water shot out from adventurer-girl’s hand.
Her magic power was pretty high so the blast looked pretty strong.
It was a direct hit against the giant slime.
Gloop! Gloop! Gloop!
…
That’s not good!
The giant slime had absorbed the water from Adventurer-chan’s spell.
It became even bigger!
“Aaaaah!” x2
We both started running towards the town gates.
“Use another spell idiot!”
“I can’t!”
“WHAT!”
“I don’t know any other attack spells!”
“WHY!”
“Forget it, just focus on running!”
“Aaaaah!” x2
Part 2
“Ah… Ah… Ah” x2
We barely made it back to the town in one piece.

We’re safe behind the town gates.
The guardsmen can deal with the mega slime, I’ve had enough for one day.
“God I’m tired from all that running. Let’s hurry back to the guild so we can get paid. I need a warm bath and a big meal.”
“It’s your fault we had to run you idiot. You made that slime evolve with your water magic!”
“Hey! The first giant slime only happened because you bullied it’s friend!”
“I didn’t know that would happen! There’s not supposed to be strong monsters around here. More importantly, why don’t you know another attack spell besides water!”
“Water magic is my favorite. Besides, I’ve used a lot of my skill points a bunch of support spells. Right now, I don’t have many points left.”
“What about Fireball? It’s one of the cheapest skills available.”
“No. I refuse to learn any fire spells.”
“Why don’t you want to learn it?”
“That’s easy. It’s none of your business. Hahaha.”
Ugh… This girl is annoying.
If she had another attack spell, she might have been able to beat the giant slime.
We might have gotten a bonus reward or rare drop for killing it.
“What about you? As the basic job, you have most basic skills available to you. Now that you’re level two, you should have enough skill points to learn one of the basic attack spells. Even if your magic stat is super weak, anything is better than nothing.”
“Stop calling me weak! Besides, I don’t plan to learn any skills unless I have to. I’m saving my skill points. I have a certain spell in mind that will cost a lot once I’m able to learn it.”
“Ooooh. What skill is that?”
“None of your business. Hahaha.”
“Wah?”
The skill I plan on learning is teleport.
When I checked my skill tree after becoming an adventurer, the hero’s signature moves were all still on the menu.
They were all still locked for some reason.
Those skills must important to me in this world.
I still don’t know how to unlock them but when I do, I want to be able to learn “Teleport” and try to go home as soon as possible.
Adventurer-chan and I made our way back to the adventurer’s guild.
“Hey Hero-kun look at the guild.”
There was a big crowd inside.
I wonder what’s going on.
“Excuse me. Excuse me! Hey get out of the way!”
Adventurer-chan pushed people out of the way as we made our way to the front of the crowd.
Guildmaster was speaking in front of the quest board.
“Attention everyone. There is now an urgent quest that will be posted.”
Everyone in the guild was interested.
“Psst. Hey Adventure-chan, what does she mean by an urgent quest?”
“It’s a really important quest that needs to be fulfilled as soon as possible. Usually they’re pretty difficult so multiple parties are allowed to team up together. The rewards are always huge too.”
That sounds interesting.
It also sounds pretty dangerous but if we find another party to cover our weaknesses, it would be a cake walk.
Adventure-chan may not be that bright but her magic is no joke.
Other parties would definitely team up with us.
It could be worth the risk.
“We are looking for 2 or 3 parties to join this quest. The objective is to clear the “Mining Caves” of monsters and save the miners trapped in there.”
Nope, definitely not worth the risk.
Why the hell is this an urgent quest?

This is not how the game is supposed to go.
Did this happen because I left?
What other things will change now that the hero is gone?
“More details will be posted on the board but I know what you all really want. The reward for this quest is 200 thousand gold.”
The guild went crazy after hearing that.
…
After the guild calmed down, Adventurer-chan was yelling at me while I tried to eat dinner.
“Come on Hero-kun, please! Let’s go on the quest!”
“I already told you no!”
“Why not! I read the quest details. A lot of the monsters there are weak to water! It’ll be perfect for me!”
“NO! We cannot go. Trust me, it’s a bad idea.”
“We’ll be rich after we complete the quest!”
“That’s not the point! We are not going on that quest!”
As we kept fighting about it, Guildmaster walked over to us.
“These two are the ones I wanted to introduce you to. This girl’s magic will surely be of use on the quest.”
A familiar girl walked up from behind Guildmaster.
“Oh it’s you Adventurer-chan. And you have another person in your party. Hello. Nice to meet you - Eh!”
This might be the worst case scenario.
I didn't expect to see Heroine-chan again, especially not so soon.
“What the hell are you doing here!”
Part 3
I didn’t think the beautiful Heroine-chan would have such a temper on her.
How unlucky that she found me here.
Hey don’t attack me in the middle of my thoughts!
Heroine-chan charged at me with her sword.
I took out my sword just in time to block her attack.
“How dare you show your face here after running away!”
We continued to clash.
I was able to keep up somewhat, thanks to Adventurer-chan’s lessons.
“I think you have the wrong person?”
“Shut up you fool! It’s obviously you. What kind of idiot would forget your face after a single day?”
A certain adventuring girl comes to mind.
Woah!
She slashed at me again.
“Hey if you don’t stop someone might end up getting hurt!”
“Exactly!”
I blocked her next attack, but the force was enough to throw me against a table.
Crap she’s really strong.
She’s triple my level and her stats are way higher than mine.
I definitely can’t beat her in a fair fight.
I looked around for a way out.
There it is, a chance!
I grabbed a pitcher of beer and throw the liquid in her face.
She’s stunned.
I’ll knock her out with the back of my sword.
That’s when I'll make a break for it!
“Sorry but- Ahhhhh!”
Crash!
Guildmaster kicked me across the room before I could land the deciding blow.
“Please don’t make a mess of my guild.”
I lost my sword and ended up crashing into another table.
Damn this hurts, but I don’t have time to sit here.
I made a break for the exit.
“Holy Shit!”
My sword was sent flying into the ground blocking my way out.
Guildmaster walked up and grabbed me by the shoulder.
“I would appreciate if you didn’t leave before explaining what’s going on.”
I looked at Heroine-chan glaring at me while wiping the beer out of her eyes.
I turned back to see Guildmaster’s face.
I can sense a raging aura behind that smile of hers.
God she’s even scarier than I thought.
“... Fine”
We all sat down at a table and ate while we talked.
I came clean to Heroine-chan, Guildmaster, Adventure-chan, and all of the nosy idiots crowded around us.
“Oh my Heroine-chan, I didn’t think you were desperate enough to fall for this scaredy-cat hero. Hahaha!”
“Don’t believe him Adventure-chan. That letter he wrote was ridiculous. Hey you dumbass hero! Stop stretching the truth!”
“What do you mean stretching the truth. You were totally in love with me. You even kissed me and asked me to give you a cute pet name just like how couples do! I was surprised you didn’t kick my door down to have your way with me - Ouch! Don’t throw food at me you idiot!”
“Hey! I already told you to stop fighting in my guild. Hero-kun you were chosen by the goddess to be the hero. Do you really want to ignore your responsibilities?”
“Yes. I already told you. The demons are too strong. I’m scared!”
“Even if you are scared, that doesn’t excuse you from your duty! I will make you come back and fight. Even if it’s by force.”
“Ok, first off, our last fight was my win until Guildmaster stepped in. Second, if you alone can beat me, then I wouldn’t stand a chance against an army of demons.”
“You won’t know unless you try! The goddess teleported you here for a reason. Be the hero that this world needs!”
“I already told you no! Right now, I’m only level 2! I would get one-shot by any demon. Unlike you, I haven’t trained for years. I’m not a hardened warrior. I wasn’t even an adventurer until I came to this town!”
“I’m sorry but I can’t let you-”
“Hey! I’m not gonna fight the demon army! They’re too strong. You of all people should know what the demons are capable of!”
Heroine-chan flinched.
Looks like I touched a nerve with that one.
Adventurer-chan finally spoke up.
“Hey Hero-kun. Stop yelling! I don’t like my friends arguing.”
Heroine-chan came back to her senses.
“It’s alright Adventurer-chan. I’m alright. Yes Hero-kun I do understand how strong the demons are. It seems like there’s no reasoning with you right now so I’ll leave it be, but after we complete this quest I will convince you to come back.”
“That’s not happening either. We are not going on the quest.”
“What the hell do you mean! I get your afraid of the demons but what now!”
“Cmon Hero-kun. This quest is a perfect match for me.”
“I agree Hero-kun. Adventure-chan’s magic will be useful during this quest. If you two go, you will be able to clear your debt with the guild.”
“Nope. Not gonna happen. There’s a lot of other adventurers here. Have a bunch of them go.”
“You are unbelievable! The whole reason I had to come here and issue this urgent quest was because you abandoned us! Only my squad of knights are available to go to the mines. It will be difficult for us with so few numbers!”
“Well now you shouldn’t have a problem. Take 10 adventurers with you. In fact you should take 20.”
“How selfish can you be? There are people trapped in the “Magic Mines”. Do you not care for all those lives you are abandoning.”
“Hey you should really just let this one go. It would benefit both of us if you shut up right now.”
“I will not shut up! You are just a lazy bum; a complete waste of resources! I should issue a quest for your arrest!”
Ugh...
This girl is pissing me off.
I don’t really see another way out of this so I guess it’s time.
“The reason I won’t go to the “Magic Mines”, the reason all those monsters showed up with no explanation; It’s because there's a demon currently in there.”

Understanding a cultivation world
A modern man armed with having read a few novels about cultivation is suddenly transmigrated to a cultivation world. He fights to both survive and thrive in this new archaic world full of arrogant young masters, demonic sects, and incredibly hostile wildlife. Note: In this story, I wanted to focus a lot more on what most novels skim past in regards to cultivation, namely the whole, spiritual growth aspect that seems to be entirely absent from the prosses of obtaining enlightenment the majority of the time, but the method of gaining cultivation. how it works, and what kind of world would develop around it are all things I wish to explore in this novel.
