《The Wizard》Chapter Five Homecoming

It was snowing out, and so it was cold. Beneath the glowing golden armor, I was naked, though the cold never reached me. I was surrounded by people, students, who when the shock of seeing a man appear from nowhere was over, pulled out their smartphones and took pictures of me.
As I watched the crowd taking pictures of me, A thought occurred to me. According to the voice that had been in my mind these were the people all I endured was for. These were those I needed to protect. People including my brother Danny, my mom and dad, and my sisters Michelle and Anna. All the people I love. I needed to know what was coming, and for that I need to go to the Akashic Records.
I hadn’t noticed the little girl who ran up to me and said, “hi I’m Nicole, what’s your name.”
I knelt down to her level, “hi Nicole, I’m Michael. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Why are you dressed like that?”
“This protects me so I can protect you from bad things.”
The crowd began to murmur until someone asked, “what bad things?”
“Something is coming for us, something the Army and Navy can’t stop. I’m here to fight those things,” I looked around as people filmed me, “me and people like me.”
Nicole asked, “how many are like you on your superhero team?”
I chuckled, “to be honest, I don’t know. There are many of us all over the world. We were just the first to finish training.”
“Then you’re the best. Bobby says that the first is always the best.”
I laughed and several in the crowd chuckled.
“Why is your yellow armor glowing?” She asked.
“It’s magic.”
An O appeared where her mouth was and she squinted at me, “you can do magic?”
“Yes.”
“Show me!” I had her attention. I had the attention of the crowd also. I decided to put on a show. I stood and spread my arms. In my mind I reached to the stream of energy that was Summon Djinn. Mentally I envisioned and commanded the djinn to appear as a giant. And it did.
The crowd backed away as a five story humanoid appeared. It had the top of a man and the bottom of smoke. Its skin was blue and its voice boomed, “Hear me oh Master, your wish is my command.”

I turned to Nicole, “I have to leave now. I need to see my Mom and Dad. Listen Nicole, should your life ever be in danger, say my name, and I will be there. Goodbye.” I turned to my Djinn, willed it to pick me up and take me to my room in my parents home. Within moments we were there.
I went to my dresser and closet to get some clothes and put them on. It felt good not to be naked anymore, even though I was clothed in magical golden armor. I heard someone running up the stairs, a lot of someones. My door burst open and my father was there with a gun pointing it at me. Anna and Michelle were right behind him with baseball bats.
“Who are you? What’s with that armor? And what are you doing in my sons room?”
“Why Dad, don’t you recognize me?”
“Michael?”
“Michael,” Anna and Michelle shouted and dashed around my father to hug me. I canceled my Mystic Armor Spell.
“Sharon,” my father yelled, “Michael’s home!” I heard running and moments later I hugged my family. They were safe and well.
“I take it Danny’s at school?” I asked my mother and saw my father look downwards. I got worried. Where was my brother Danny?
“Darren, tell Michael what happened?” My mother’s voice was gentle.
“Michael you vanished three months ago, when the towers came. Nobody know what to do. I was going to go to the tower north of your university to get you back, but I couldn’t risk leaving your mom and sisters without support. Danny didn’t understand that,” Dad said.
My father shriveled before my eyes, my mother put her hand on his. She turned to me, “Danny vanished near the tower closest to us. It was two weeks ago.”
“Mom, dad, how long was I gone for? To me it was a few weeks.”
“More like a few months bro,” said Anna.
“What?” I said, “that explains the snow.”
“You came back to us, so will he,” said Mom.
“You got that right Mom, I’m going to get him.”
“No, you’re here now, I will get Danny,” said Dad.

“No Dad, I am powerful, more likely to win battles and bring Danny home. I can also in a way see the future with Akashic Records. I can see where he is, so I can find him dad. And to top it off,” I smiled, “I have magic.”
“I should be protecting you …:
“You did Dad, now it’s my turn. I will bring Danny home.”
“Michael you shouldn’t have to …”
“And besides that Dad, I have both a genie and a killing machine.”
“You have a … genie?” Asked Michelle.
“Let me memorize my spells and I will get Danny tomorrow. I will use the Akashic Records to see if Danny is Ok now.”
“What is this Akashic Record stuff?” Asked mom.
“It’s a library outside of the Multiverse. What’s fantastic about it is that it contains the knowledge of all happenings in the Multiverse, that includes all the experiences of Danny’s life,” I sat on my bed crosslegged, reached to the energy bundle that was Akashic Records, and set it free casting the spell. My room, my family and my world faded away and I found myself in a doorway to a room. There were four doors in the room along with what had to be a thousand books.
“I need information on Danny Tanner,” I told the room, and everything phased out and in for a moment. I entered the room and and began searching through the Akashic Record of my brother Danny Tanner.
I saw books on Darren and Sharron Tanner, myself and my sisters and books on Danny’s first days in life, his schools, his friends, his enemies and finally a book on his experiences in the Tower structure. I turned to the last page of the book to find sentences being written as I read. I read that Danny was absorbing life energy. He wore leather armor and had a longsword and a bow which the sixteen year old used to great effect.
He was fighting cannibals and he was not alone. There were at least thirty warriors there. They made short work of the cannibals and secured the room for the night and set up a watch, the guards in the evening. I saw another book glowing on the wall. I got it and was shocked to see a picture on the cover. It was the son of the brunette that I met. He was fighting his mother, Danny, and me. I would have to check on this later. I checked my status after releasing the spell,

I was surprised that Summon Djinn and Akashic Record improved but none of my other skills improved. I cast Mystic Armor on myself, and I was tired. I proceeded to memorize spells to get a full complement. I slept.
The next day I woke up first and made myself bacon and eggs and ate. I summoned a Djinn and was startled when I heard,
“Oh my God he’s so cute!” I turned to see my sister Anna gushing at the Djinn.
“She’s at that age,” I told the Djinn.
“That’s a real Genie. It grants wishes? Oh my God you are so lucky!”
I chuckled.
“Can you get one for me?”
There was a tiny pressure against my will. The Djinn was fighting for its freedom. I said, “I know you don’t like being here, I will release you as soon as I get my brother.”
“And summon me again,” said the Djinn.
I was silent for a moment, “and summon you again when I have need.”
“And you will enslave one of my brothers for your sister. I’ve never met a Will as strong as your’s but I can feel your sister, my brothers will crush her and make her a slave.”
“I don’t think I want a genie bro,” Anna shook her head no.
I felt like an asshole as I said, “take me to my brother’s tower.”

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
