《Golden Glow: Curses from this High One》Chapter 8

The walls of the town were nice. They were made of dark grey stone with moss and vines growing up the sides. Nemesis sighed and began the long walk to the dungeon inside the town. The forest was not a good place to level up after all. Maybe she had been expecting to find only slimes in the forest but the encounter with the goblins had shown her otherwise. On the way to the dungeon Nemesis stopped by the item shop and bought a escape rope with all of the money. She did not want to lose another point of experience even if she had to spend all of her money to keep it.
Nemesis had already formed a plan to ensure that she could safely gain experience points, it was quite simple really. The plan was to enter the first floor, kill as many lonely rats as possible, and then get the hell out and reset the floor. Then all that was left to do was to rinse and repeat until she could stomp other players into the ground.
As she approached the dungeon Nemesis saw that there were several Player groups that were around the entrance talking. Guy took a deep breath and channeled his role playing spirit. Nemesis confidently approached the dank dungeon entrance with swagger extruding from her cloaked body. Her heels clicked and clacked on the cobbled floor as she walked toward the entrance of the Dungeon and walked down the stairs like she was out to get groceries. She had gotten a few glances from some of the groups but nothing more. Those few moments were enough to stoke her role playing spirit as she continued down the steps for another few seconds.
Nemesis finally reached the first floor of the dungeon and carefully observed her soundings for any lone rats. After spending a good thirty seconds counting all the rats she chose to go after a group of two that were in a corner that was mostly empty. She spent another thirty seconds carefully and quietly making her way over to the monsters. Once she was close enough Nemesis mentally prepared herself for the two verses one that was about to happen. She cast (Lesser) Weaken I on both Rats and immediately started to beat up the rat closest to her.

Nemesis curb stomped the closest Rat so fast and hard that it died in less than a second and a half.

The second rat leapt into the air with its claws drawn. Nemesis dropped to the floor and narrowly dodged the rats air-born tail attack.
Nemesis swiftly got onto her feet to counter attack the rat which had turned around upon landing only to see her heels drive into its eyes.
After a few more kicks the second rat was dead and Nemesis received the experience notifications.

Nemesis wanted to screech out with joy at the top of her lungs! She finally obtained some experience points without getting herself killed! She had actually progressed (however small) in the game and could continue to level like a normal person. Like a normal player...
Nemesis took a deep breath to calm herself and went back into the dungeon to repeat her last victory. She did not waiting for the dungeon to reset of course. Luckily, that did not stop her from hunting another two rats and escaping to the surface once more to regenerate her mana and stamina. With her confidence back she continued to hunt down the rats that were in smaller groups nearly dying at moments ,but it was all worth it when she leveled up. When she finally reached the surface Nemesis immediately checked her status.

Nemesis split her newly earned status points between Knw and Wis. She hoped that specializing harder into magic would help with her generally underpower-ness. Her new status looked like this:

Nemesis waited another few minutes for her Mp and Sp to regenerate before heading back into the dungeon to test her new stats. Nemesis noticed as she was headed down into the dungeon was the speed and stability at which she walked had increased slightly. She made her way to the bottom of the stairs and counted the remaining rats in the room which was quite easy as all of them were together in a large-ish group. Right where the stairs to the next level were four rats stood together in a single row all facing toward her.
Nemesis cast her spells on all the rats in quick succession.
You cast (Lesser) Weaken I on Rat Lv1! Rat Lv1 has -5Hp for 16 seconds! You cast (Lesser) Weaken I on Rat Lv1! Rat Lv1 has -5Hp for 16 seconds! You cast (Lesser) Weaken I on Rat Lv1! Rat Lv1 has -5Hp for 16 seconds! You cast (Lesser) Weaken I on Rat Lv1! Rat Lv1 has -5Hp for 16 seconds!
The middle left rat leapt at her, it's jaw gaping open.
Nemesis caught the rat with her hands and held it by the mouth.
Rat Lv1 bit You! -5Hp
In the mean time, the rats that were on the outside of their formation went behind her. The other center rat soon boulderer toward her and hastily attacked Nemesis.
With a burst of speed Nemesis swung the rat that she was holding to take the blow for her. Her make shift shield died and slipped out of her hands.

Keeping her momentum at a high she kicked the rat in front of her which caused it to collapse.

Nemesis head a scuffle behind her and dropped to the floor kicking her feet behind her.
One rat flew over her head and Nemesis felt her feet hit something.

'
That was three.' Nemesis counted in her head. The rat that leap over her was the last one in the room.
Nemesis got up from the floor and ran at the remaining rat that had just recovered from its jump.
The rat prepped for another jump as she close the distance. Once Nemesis was in range the rat leapt from the ground and opened its mouth readying to unleash its devastating bite.
Nemesis wouldn't let this happen as she ducked underneath the rat and gripped its tail.
The sudden stop for the rat caused it to slam into the ground ,but the weight of the rat changed Nemesis's Center of Gravity to much causing her to fall to the floor to.
Rat Lv 1 tackled You! -6Hp
Knowing that her health was low Nemesis hopped onto the rat and began to beat it to a pulp.
After three punches she got the notifications that the Rat died.

Nemesis collapsed to the floor and closed her eyes in rest. She breathed out only a single word.
"Yes..."

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!

2nd Floor
Matthias is a struggling writer finally able to move into his first solo apartment. He's thrilled to have a place free of roommates and siblings, even though the building is decrepit and is inhabited by an odd assortment of people including an intrusive neighbor, a little girl who wanders freely, and an overweight orange cat named Cheese. As Matthias settles in things begin getting stranger. Something vile is growing in the dark and it's coming from somewhere on the second floor... where Matthias happens to live.Author's note: this is me trying to get back to my roots: a character driven novella with horror elements. The story of people struggling against an inscrutable enemy, as well as the day to day trials of being poor in America. I have no idea how often I'll update or even exactly how this will all go down because y'girl is a panster. So strap in because this is the first draft and you all get to see it being born!Feel free to comment whatever comes to mind, and helpful critiques are always welcome.
