《The Darkened Dove (SCP-049 x reader)》Chapter 10: A Chip on Your Shoulder
Advertisement
Your body twitched when an unknown liquid dripped onto your face. After a few more drips you were pulled from your unconscious state. Dazed, you opened your eyes, blinking away your blurred vision. Everything around you was a dark green with floating black specs looking almost like dark fog.
A few confused minutes passed before the realisation finally hit you. There was a breach, SCP-106 attacking, you getting sucked into what you now believe to be his infamous pocket dimension. Sitting up you scanned the new area, your breathing quickened.
The air in here was humid and suffocating. You were in the center of a room with dark rectangular entrances surrounding you. Everyone of them had a dark green hue and they lead into pure darkness.
You moved to stand up, your skin was sticky with the black substance that had nearly suffocated you. You could feel your heart race faster. Everywhere you looked was the same. Your lungs were already burning from the air in this dimension. Your body had began to take a toll from the different atmosphere of SCP-106's pocket dimension, your legs nearly gave out under its pressure and you could feel a migraine start from the back of your brain. You had to get out of here.
You made your way over to the first hallway-like entrance, looking as far into the void as you could. You could barely see more than a foot in front of you. Circling the room you scanned each door hoping for any hints on where you were supposed to go from here. You jumped at one of the entrances, there was a freshly decaying guard's body propped up against the wall. You had no idea how you missed that. You moved on from that hallway, you had to find your way out of here or else you were going to turn out just like him.
You didn't know much about SCP-106 nor his pocket dimension, what you did know is that it liked to 'play' with its victims. Putting them through mazes until it decided to torture them to death. But, you also knew that their had to be a way out. Since that D class had escaped, and maybe your father. Or at least that had been what Chloe told you during her long rants. So surely there had to be some sort of trick to this. Right? Now, you wished you had asked her more questions.
You were considering picking one at random and hoping to get lucky, until you noticed something. It was small but as you were passing one of the hallways you realized that you could see just a couple feet further than you could in all the others. You blinked a few times. It could just be your eyes adjusting to the darkness but once you noticed it you couldn't un-see it. You compared a few hallways until you were absolutely sure that this was the only entrance that looked like this.
You took a deep breath and stepped into the entrance. After only a couple steps the room behind you vanished and you found yourself immediately transported back into the facility.
You let out a sigh of relief and scanned the familiar grey walls. You had never been so happy to see grey instead of green. All the lights were out, with only the emergency lights flickering. You were still in a hallway with two doors on either side of the hall.
You made your way to the closest door and pushed the button beside it. Your lungs still burned. The door slid open to reveal nothing but a deep green sea of darkness.

It's black, decayed face flashed in your mind with its sickening smile and wrinkly, bald scalp. Even if it was all in your head it had felt so real.
He is watching you.
You screamed and jumped back, quickly shutting the door in front of you. You backed up catching your breath. This wasn't over. You back up to the second door not risking turning your back to where you swear you saw SCP-106.
Quiet minutes passed and you finally got the courage to try the second door. Hesitant you pushed the button, fearing you'd see it's face again. But no, this time it was a slightly brighter green. You starred down into the abyss and you could make out a floor not too far below you. You studied the area, looking for any possible traps or signs of SCP-106 in hopes to avoid what it could throw at you next. But who were you kidding? This whole thing was one giant trap. You started to tremble, it's face still haunted your mind.
Feeling like there was no other way you gathered up your courage and dropped down into darkness. You crashed down and heard a loud cracking sound beneath you. You had landed on something firm but softer and... Lumpier than the floor you had expected. The cracking sound made you uneasy, you didn't break a bone did you? You moved your body with no pain other than what you had felt before.
Your eyes started to a just to the darkness. You moved to get up, using your arms to push against the squishy floor. The smell in the room was horrible worse than anything you had ever smelt before. You looked down to see what you had been laying on. Your eyes widened and you your mouth opened without making a sound.
Below you, you see someone's decaying face. They were unrecognizable. Their eyes were gone and their dislocated jaw revealed their tongue had been riped out as well. You scrambled off of their body only to fall hard onto another. Panic started to rise in you. Your breathing was uncontrollable. Puke started to travel up your throat. You chose to swallow it and ran while you still had the chance.
Moving faster than you knew you could you tumbled and toppled over the piles of dead and decaying bodies, mutilated and twisted in ways that burned in your brain. Remains of legs, arms and faces getting crushed under your wobbly steps. It felt like the death would never end.
Finally you had climbed over the last mountain of carcasses and landed on the green floor. You kept running until you could barely feel your legs anymore. Your lungs were on fire. You wanted to be as far away from that room as you could possibly be. Taking a moment you again tried to catch your breath, you leaned against the wall beside you. Your shoulder started to sink in into the mushy wall. Quickly you pulled away and watched as the wall formed back to its seemingly solid form. Small black particles floated around you and no doubt were entering your lungs as you panted for air. You felt warm tears fill your eyes and threaten to fall. How am I going to survive this?
Shaking your head you immediately blinked them away. You weren't going to let yourself die. You were going to get out of here, and right now crying wasn't going to help. You slowly made your way down the endless hallway, even if you were already exhausted you didn't feel safe staying in one place.

You kept going until the tunnel shifted and changed into a more solid structure. The green slowly changing into almost a lime green. It began to hurt your eyes a little. Then the hallway turned and there was another opening to yet another dark pit. Your breathing was shaky and your limbs trembled fighting to stay upright. You were going to have to jump down again. You looked back to see that the lime green walls had reshaped themselves into a dead end behind you.
Having no other choice you jumped down again, praying that you didn't land on another body. This time you landed feet first and staggering on a hard rock like surface. You cringed as you took a step, the bottom of your feet stung after landing on hard ground. The long green rock below you hovered over another black abyss and strait ahead of you there was a large tube leading to a hole heading downwards into more darkness. But, there was something about that hole the gave you a trace of hope. The hope scared you but you held onto it, it was the last you felt since SCP-106's darkness had nearly drowned you.
You walked closer to the hole, you were almost there when something strong grabbed your ankle and started to pull you back. Panicked you faught against it's hold. You looked back in time to see a decaying black hand holding your ankle and a bald head start to rise from the ground. SCP-106 laughed, the deep gurgly sound echoed around you. After it's head fully rose out of the ground a red light caught your eye. There was something around it's neck, a blinking red dot flashed off of a metal collar locked in place. You hadn't noticed that the last time you saw SCP-106.
It pulled you closer to its face and you switched your focus back on escaping. In an attempt to free your self you lifted up your free leg and whipped around kicking the entity in the face as hard as you could.
It let out a painful grunt and let go of you in shock. You raced with all that you had towards the hole. Inhuman growling came from behind you and the green rock below you started to fade to black with the all too familiar sticky substance. This time, however you kept running trying to ignore the approaching footsteps behind you, growing faster and faster.
You finally got to the edge of the tube and without a second thought you jumped into darkness.
----
The darkness slowly started to clear from around you and your breathing didn't bother you anymore. Your vision started to come back enough to figure out where you were. You were back in the facility again. The room was unfamiliar to you, but the dark grey walls indicated that you were still deep in heavy containment and far from where you needed to be to consider yourself safe.
You approached the nearest door and pressed the button, only to be rejected. It needed a key card. Opening your jacket you pulled yours out and unlocked it for yourself. To your relief you were not greeted with darkness again, only another grey hallway. It wasn't another trick.
You cautiously walked out into the hallway, the flickering lights made the foundation feel more ominous than usual. There was nothing but your footsteps clanking against the metal floor. It only made you even more uneasy.
You were in further than you ever had before. Everything looked the same, yet everything looked different. You held your breath as you opened each door fearing the worst could be on the lurking on other side. Even with your fear shaking you to the core you kept moving, refusing to let your nerves get to you once again.
A small bump from behind you was enough to make you jump out of your skin. You looked back each time only to find nothing. You opened the next door into another circular room with various doors surrounding you. You couldn't help but start to walk faster.
You wished you had a map. You were provided one when you first began but it only gave you instructions as far as you needed to go. So, now because of that you would have no sure checkpoints to find your way out until you reached the elevator to SCP-049's containment chamber.
You felt a chill go down your spine when that thought crossed your mind. Had he escaped too? All the intercom said was multiple Keter and Euclid level containment breaches so you had no idea who all that was. Other than SCP-106 you hadn't seen any other SCPs. The silence and anticipation was unbearable point that every bump or the smallest noise could be enough to give you a heart attack. You ran through in your mind the short training that you received in case there was ever a breach. It was mandatory for every personnel to be at least somewhat understanding of what horrors this place holds. They only specifically warned you of three different SCP's, SCP-173, SCP-939, and S-
You stopped when a clearer noise echoed in the next room. It started inhuman, a strange cry sounded almost like some sort of animal. You pressed your ear on the door. The animal like noise slowly change to a human like cry. Like there was someone weeping on the other side. A pit started to grow in your stomach. You thought about turning around and finding a different route, but so far you had made progress following empty containment chambers until you finally made it to anything familiar.
But you had been warned about what could be weeping on the other side. The third SCP that they mentioned in their warning was quite possibly one of the worst you had ever heard of. SCP-096, a humanoid entity who will hunt you down and tear you to shreds no matter how far away you run if you ever see his face. Even if it was only a picture. The animal like noises restarted on the other side, now you were sure what was there.
You turned around, one wrong glance and there would be no chance for you if you messed with that thing. Assuming that it was SCP-096. You weren't going to risk it. Going back to the last intersection you chose a different door. It lead to a hallway that looked identical to the last except for the blood smeared on the far left wall. You took a deep breath and kept going.
You passed through so many hallways, intersections and empty containment chambers before you found yourself in a somewhat familiar place. You couldn't help but smile as the fear inside you eased slightly. There, in front of you was a containment chamber labeled SCP-439 this was where Hadley took you a little over a month ago. You could probably find your way back from here.
You started heading out into somewhat familiar territory. You walked towards the first door that you were sure she had brought you through that day. It brought you into another intersection where you chose to keep going strait through trying your best to remember where she had brought you.
A door opened from behind you. Jumping and whipping around you searched for the source. A tall, lanky man with a bright orange prison uniform stepped in, a D-class. As soon as he noticed you he reached into his jumpsuit and pulled out a gun.
"You! Stop! Put your hands up!" He yelled at you and you put your hands up without a second thought. You felt your heart pick up again.
"Now, empty your pockets." He approached you until he was only a foot away from you. You did as you were told pulling out papers and pens. Then, you felt your key card and the letter, and your stomach dropped. If you didn't have this, you couldn't get out of heavy containment. You would be stuck, and that would be a death sentence. You chose to drop the letter in hopes he would see the same as Hadley did, and maybe truly think that you didn't have anything valuable.
He looked at all the stuff you dropped. "What the hell!? This is nothing. You have a key card. All of you do. Give it to me. Now." He demanded his dark eyes glaring into your soul.
You reached back into your lab coat, defeated you pulled out your key card. "Ok, now drop it on the ground." He talked to you as if you were a child.
"Good," he grabbed the card. Looking at you for a moment. A sick smile appeared on his face, "I'll give you two seconds. Two seconds to get out of my face." You took a step back to run, but something stopped you. The letter. It lay beckoning to you on top of the pile of papers you dropped onto the floor.
Quickly you reached down grabbed it and ran. You barely made it halfway through the next hallway before two loud bangs shot through the room. A rush of adrenalin hit you as you kept running. To the next door and into wherever it lead you to, you shut the door behind you and kept going unsure of where you were going.
Finally, you stopped running when your a rush of dizziness came over you. You took in a shaky breath, a hot burning sensation pulsed in your right shoulder. Your face contorted into a horrified expression when you looked down to see blood dripping from your arm, and staining your white lab coat. Your breathing stopped as the burning increased. He shot you.
Grabbing your injured shoulder you kept going. Walking and walking through endless hallways and labs, there was a trail of blood forming behind you. Droplets going as far as you could see. You passed by a storage room with a small window revealing what was inside. There was a first aid kit inside. You frantically pressed the button to open the door only to hear a negative chime. Your stomach sank, you needed a key card.
Your vision began to blur you didn't know how long you had been walking. It felt like it could have been days. Days of nothing but doors, hallways, and grey. You felt cold. You kept walking until you knew where you were. You recognized that little elevator down to the basement, tucked away in its own little hall. Continuing past it you knew the entrance into heavy containment was just a little ways away.
You made it only a few more steps until your legs couldn't support you anymore. Leaning up against the wall you let yourself slide to the floor. Your head was spinning and your shoulder and side were on fire. Your body was freezing, even the waterfall of blood down your arm and side was cold now. You laid down on your uninjured side, your strength was gone. After you rested on the floor you could hardly move, even breathing was difficult again.
Your eyes were barely open as you lay there cold on the hard floor. Sounds didn't bother you anymore. At this point, you knew that you weren't going to survive this. You didn't know how long you laid there bleeding out, Seconds? Minutes? It felt like hours. Your vision began to blur and your breathing slowed. The burning in your shoulder started to fade away. The pounding in your head replaced with an almost cloudy feeling.
Eventually, an elevator dinged nearby and heavy foot steps followed shortly after. You were prepared to accept death. There was no fight left in your eyes. Your vision was too blurry to make out anything. Whoever was there seemed to have stopped in front of you for a moment. You could sense their eyes were on you. Whoever or whatever it was you were ready for them to finish you off. Maybe another SCP finally found you, ready to kill you in whatever horrible way they chose, or another D class was eager to add to their kill count. You tightly closed your eyes, anxiously waiting for the person, creature, or anything to end your life.
After a few tense moments you felt a gentle hand on your back. You couldn't even flinch. The hand moved down beneath your shoulders and then a second hand underneath your legs. The next thing you knew the hard ground was replaced with nothing but air and two strong arms holding you up as if you weighed nothing. You didn't fight it. You couldn't.
There was a strong smell blood, although, the bloody smell could have easily been your own. There was also a faint scent of leather that hit you as you leaned into whatever held you. Your head resting softly against their arm.
You felt whoever was holding you move and heavy footsteps clanked against the meshed floors. You kept your eyes closed, from both a lingering sense of fear and the fact that your eyelids felt too weak to open.
Your pounding heart beat was slowly soothed by the strong, yet tender embrace. And for the first time in years, you felt a sense of security. It wasn't long before you fully gave into your exhaustion drifting off, you let the world around you fade away.

They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.

In Keys of the Endpoint there's portal fantasy, personal drama, magic (useable by everyone), plenty of combat, power progression, mysteries, factions, feuds and eventually war (in that order). The magic system is well defined and modular with nigh infinite combinations.
