Fred's POV:
I saw her quickly rush out of potions - she couldn't know could she? I tried to go after her, but I stopped when I realised I had no idea what I'd say to her. I grabbed Lee as he was leaving behind me, and began really freaking out.
"She couldn't know could she?" I asked panicking.
"What? That you've been in love with her for the past year? Nooooo." He said laughing.
"Lee mate I'm serious - do you think she knows?" I said putting my hands on his shoulders.
"No I don't think she knows, because she was running off to see Cho, plus, she would've confronted you there and then if she had any idea - Y/N doesn't like to be kept in the dark." He replied.
"You're right, yeah, she doesn't know, she doesn't know." I repeated to myself as we walked away. People had been leaving the class as me and Lee had been talking, and I didn't notice Adrian Pucey leaning hiding around the other side of the pillar, listening into our conversation.
Y/N POV:
I ran as fast as I could to meet Cho, and even though I was late, Cho didn't mind. She never did. She was always so kind and understanding, and very, very patient - something I sometimes lacked. We worked together in the library, until we realised it was dinner, and we slipped into the Great Hall together. She joined Cedric (he was beaming as soon as he saw her) and sat down with him - they were so cute together. I waved at Ced before going over to the Gryffindor table, and squeezing in imbetween Katie and Hermione, with Fred directly opposite me.
I realised Harry was sat at the other end of the table, with Neville, whilst Ron and Hermione were with us - they obviously had a falling out, probably over the tournament. I got up and left the bench.

"I'll be back in a minute, I'm just going to talk to Harry." I told the table. They just looked at me and smiled, continuing their conversations and eating - except for Ron, he glared at me as I made my way to Harry.
I sat down next to Harry and turned to him with a smile on my face. He looked so sad and lonely, even with Neville being with him.
"Hey Harry, Hey Neville." I greeted the boys
"Hey Y/N!" Neville said excitedly. He was really sweet and kind, it was such a shame people were mean to him. I'd only spoken to Neville a few times, but he gave me a plant for Christmas last year which I think was lovely. Harry didn't respond to my greeting, he just looked down at his food.
"Hey Harry, I believe you." He looked up at me.
"If this is a prank of the twins it isn't funny." He said glaring.
"No I'm serious. The fact none of our other friends can actually realise you're tired of risking your life every year and you just want to have a normal year at Hogwarts really annoys me." I ranted. He looked at me and smiled.
"I know you didn't put your name in the goblet - and so does Sirius." I said with a lowered voice. Harry's eyes lit up at Dad's name.
"He wants to see you again - expect an owl tonight." I said, getting up and going back, leaving Harry with a massive smile on his face.
"What's Harry smiling for?" Ron grumbled, as I came back and sat in my seat.
"Isn't a person allowed to be happy anymore Ronald? Or do we all have to be miserable like you," I replied, grabbing a few slices of ham, and putting them on my plate. Ron's eyes widened at my comment - I wasn't usually this confident or out there, I was normally far more closed off or I'd bite my tongue - but Ron was being petty and being mean about his bestfriend and I wasn't going to allow it. He just huffed, crossed his arms, and carried on eating.

I ended up tuning into Katie and Angelina's conversation.
"Yeah I heard Pucey threatened Fred earlier." Katie whispered to both of us.
"Why?" I asked.
"I don't know - but that's why he's been so quiet since potions." Katie replied in a a hushed voice. All three of us slowly turned our heads to look at Fred, who ha his head down, and was focusing on his food - ignoring his friends conversations. We snapped our heads back.
"I haven't seen him this low since we lost to Hufflepuff." Angelina said.
"Yeah...do you have any ideas how we could cheer him up? He looks so sad." Katie asked with concern in her voice.
"I mean, Y/N could talk to him - everytime she says anything to him, he cheers up." Angelina said grinning at me.
"Oh Angie shut it! We're just friends! But I'll speak to him." I said, and we turned our bodies back to face the table.
"What you three whispering about over there?" George asked, looking at us with suspicion.
"Oh nothing for you to worry about Georgie!" Angelina replied - and George's scowl slightly softened at her calling him 'Georgie'. Me and Katie smirked at eachother.
"Hey Freddie?" I said, and he stopped staring at his food, looked up and gave me a weak smile.
"Yeah Black?" He asked, but his voice was quite quiet and weak.
"Do you want to go study tomorrow? Could teach me how to do those enchanted birds too? It was so pretty!" I asked, smiling at him.
After me asking, he seemed to perk up a bit. I was going to ask him anyways, but this seemed like a good way to cheer him up too.
"I'd love to Y/N! Tomorrow at 4 good for you?" He replied, grinning now.
"Yep!" I said beaming back.
"What's this about an enchanted paper bird?" Lee joined in.
So, I explained the whole paper bird story, and Fred began blushing and smiling at me. I looked over to him and met his eyes, and my cheeks started going red. We broke eye contact when Katie said,
"Aw! That's such a beautiful little piece of magic! Who knew Fred could do something that didn't create chaos?" Everyone started laughing, even Fred.
After cheering Fred up, and finishing food, we all left to go back to the common room. I was walking with Fred, and I accidentally brushed my hand against his.
"Oh sorry about that." I said quickly. Moving my hand to my side.
"It's okay, don't worry about it Black." And he then put his arm around my shoulder and pulled my by him, and we carried on. Fred always put his arm around my shoulder, but this time I got butterflies in my stomach, and I was blushing like crazy. It was lucky we were in a dimly lit corridor, otherwise he'd see my checks were as red as his hair.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.

A collection of short stories I've written over the past few years, the centerpiece being "Solstice" itself: On the Winter Solstice, the wind whispered. They felt the golden dust of their divinity drift away from them, and the message of that wind became clear… This Winter will never end so that the Earth will.
