《Freshman》03. 1000

Forth decides to swallow his anger and let Beam slide this time. This is just the first day of SOTUS. He could get back at him anytime.
Forth signs Lam to come forward and proceed with the next part of the opening, the signature book task.
"Good morning, first years." Lam greets the freshmen.
"Good morning, P'." The first years returns the greetings.
"My name is Lam. I will tell you your first task, which you have to complete within a week." Lam says. "—collect your welcoming goody bag and take out the little blue covered book."
Everyone gets at it and in just five minutes everyone is holding the book.
"That's a signature book." Lam continues. "You have to know your seniors. There are at least 1000 students in every year. We won't be too cruel to ask you to know all of us, that is atleast 3000 students from the 2nd to 4th years, but only 1000."
Gasps sounds are heard all over.
"In a week."
Some of them feel like nearly choking on their own breaths.
"It's up to you from what year they are. You have to get their names, majors and signatures." Lam adds.
Silence.
"And for every signature you fail to get on Monday, you have to replace it with a push up."
Beam blinks. He tilts his head. Is Forth looking at him?
Beam winks at Forth.
Forth's eyes widened.
Beam chuckles. Yup. He is looking at him.
Forth sighs.
"You have to get at least 200 signatures a day. And they probably will ask you to do something for them first. Don't worry, it won't take longer than 3 minutes. If anyone makes you do anything more than 3 minutes you can let us know."
Silence.
"That would be all." Lam closed his explanation. "Now the second year will lead you into training for your Engineering chant."
The third years with Engineering red jacket outside their black T-shirt walks down the stage and are replaced by the second years with Engineering blue jacket outside their white T-shirt.
They rehearse the chant for half an hour before they're dismissed, to start their first task.
Signature book.
Beam looks at the book in his hand. It's 9 o'clock in the morning. He has time until 5 in the afternoon to get 200 signatures everyday.
25 signatures an hour.
Beam tilts his head. How to do it...?
"This is impossible."
Beam heard his new friend say. He looks at him.
"Owh, a weakling." Beam smirks at him.
That boy's eyes are widened. "What the fuck did you say?!"
His friend is looking at Beam too.
"You have not tried and yet you already say this is imposible." Beam says. "Maybe finishing Engineering will be too. Why don't you just quit and spare your parents' money from the start?"
He grits his teeth. "All talk!" He hissed.

Beam chuckles. "We'll see." He says and then walks out the field.

"Oh my God! Beam! What are you doing here wearing that T-shirt?"
Three girls runs towards Beam.
Beam smiles. He knows them. Uhm, not really, he means that he saw them at the bar, a lot. "I changed my Major. I am in my first year of Engineering right now."
"Owh. The signature book." Girl number two says. "Have you got any signatures yet?"
Beam shakes his head. "Not yet."
"Do you want our signature?" Girl number three offers.
Beam nods. "Would be nice. Thanks."
They laugh, "Noo... not that easy. You have to do something for us first."
"Okay then. What do you want me to do?" Beam asks.
"Say you love me." Girl number one says.
Beam chuckles. "You know I can't do that."
"Then we won't give you our signatures."
Beam is still maintaining his teasing smile. "I can't confess love that easily.... I have to really fall in love to say those words." He says. "And falling in love is a process." He continues.
"You are open to love?"
"I thought it would be just one night stands?"
Beam chuckles again. "Tell you what... why don't you write your name, major, signature and maybe add your number too. Just in case I get lonely and decided that I need someone to talk to." He opens his signature book. "Would you let me have it?"
The girls are stunned.
"... your number? No?" Beam asks.
They are looking at each other.
Beam closed his book. "Okay then. I guess I will try my luck someplace else. Thank you for your time...."
Beam nearly walks away when three of them pull Beam's T-shirt and write down their name, major, signature and phone number on Beam's signature book.
"Call me."
"No, call me, instead of her."
The other just winked at Beam.
Beam smiles at the three of them. "Thank you, girls."
And then he continues to get numbers from girls.
"Kiss me first." They kept trying to score from Beam.
Beam chuckles. "You know I can't do that." He refuse.
"Then I wont give you my signature."
Beam is still smiling. "Owh, girl, I am in SOTUS month. You are a beautiful girl. If I kiss you and it turns out that one of my senior is in love with you, I would be dead by the end of the day."
She is blushing. "Owh."
"Help me, na...?" Beam asks politely.
She nods instantly.
Another name, major, signature and... phone number.
The news of Beam Baramee changing majors in his third year and now doing SOTUS as an Engineering student first year spreads like wildfire.
Forth looks on from the distance while there is a line of girls wanting to give their phone number to Beam.

Park and Lam just stand besides him.
"Beam would complete the task easily at this rate." Park says.
"No. We only have at most 300 girls in each year, the 4th years are busy, the 2nd years do not know Beam that much." Lam says. "He needs the signature from the boys too. I don't think they'll give it to Beam that easily."
Forth blinks.
Beam is smiling at the girls, teasing and flirting with them as he gets signature after signature.

The second day of SOTUS. The participants are reduced by so many. Almost 200 students.
Beam is walking past the student from yesterday, who is now wearing a common uniform instead of SOTUS T-shirt. He stops. "Owh? You gave up?" He asks.
"None of your business!" He hissed at Beam.
Beam laughs. "This is just great! I will have mocking material now. Engineering students are not like what they say. They say you are fearless and invincible. Turns out you are just cowardly. Just one signature task and you already chickened out.
I am so telling the gang that Medical is better than Engineering."
It earns a hell of attention from all of the students in that wing of foodcourt. Mostly they are first year students who are skipping SOTUS.
Beam looks around. "Owh, for the record, I am former Medical student. I should be in my third year. But I enrolled to Engineering because I thought I'll be better here, learn to be braver and stronger.
Meh... I was wrong.
Keep skipping SOTUS, guys, the more you are missing, the more I am winning against your King of Satan, P'Forth and his friends. Oh God, I am so mocking them at the bar this weekend!" Beam is ecstatic.
Beam walks away as he is fanning himself with his signature book. "They say Engineering students are wolves and tigers. I am so telling the world they are chickens...."
Max who walks past the foodcourt with Tul blinks. They look at each other.
"I am so telling Forth about this." Max says to Tul.
*
Beam reached the signature target of the first day, he gets 203 signatures. Meanwhile, the other students don't.
They are doing push ups on the field.
Followed by collapse of hundreds of them.
Beam smirks as he is the only one who survived.
Forth grits his teeth. He will wait for after the third day. When Beam is running out of girls for him to get signatures.
That day, he will punish Beam to his fullest.
***
That day never happened.
What happened is the first years listened to Forth's words in the part that they can leave SOTUS.
Third day, Beam is still surviving with 607 signature. Meanwhile none of another first year is coming.
The push up punishment will be 400 in average because they are only getting about 200 signatures in three days.
Kongpob really wants to kill Forth right now. He is not doing his job very well.
Forth thought so too. But he was expecting the missing students to do SOTUS anyway. Because he had a plan to get them back. Because that actually is original plan.
But he has one problem in the middle of the field right now.
Beam fucking-Baramee.
Forth steps down from the stage and walks to Beam. Followed by four of his hazing team.
Beam is smirking to Forth. "Good morning, P'Forth."
Forth looks at Beam coldly. "That's not the way to talk to your senior, moreover your head hazer." He has to make Beam give up his plans to be able to executed. "Mention your student ID and name first."
Beam smiles. "Student ID 227, Beam Baramee." He says. "Good morning, P'Forth." He repeats his greeting.
Even when he only talks to Beam, Forth is still wearing his michrophone. It's connected to the whole speaker of the entire Engineering faculty.
"Why are you alone in here?" Forth asks.
"Because I'm the only one who has the balls to finish SOTUS." Beam says calmly. "Unlike your supposed to be original juniors, P'Forth... they are chickens. Or like you said, weaklings."
Forth blinks.
"Who would've thought that despite of you only giving a simple task like knowing their seniors, your ungrateful and cowardly juniors chose to left. All of them." Beam continues. "This is actually perfect."
Forth raised his eyebrows.
"Now I can tell the world, especially your mortal enemy, Geography and Forestry that there will be no wolf or tiger here. But chickens. So the fox can eat them." Beam hissed.
"... and Beam Baramee was right. Medical is better than Engineering." Beam continues.
"I will tell the entire university, the only freshman who finished SOTUS is Beam Baramee, former Medical student.
I am better than a thousand Engineering students combined."
Forth grits his teeth.
"They're gonna walk all over you and spit on you." Beam says.
His voice is captured by the michrophone and heard in every corner of the Faculty.
"Engineering does not have it's old glory anymore. It's golden days are over. And I might say, I conquered the first year. And then I will finish SOTUS and I can say, I conquered Engineering."
Forth's blood is boiling but he stands still. Trying to contain his anger.
Ming is face palming himself. Phana was being too much for asking him to guard Beam. How the fuck is he supposed to protect a person who throws himself into burning lava?!
"Engineering is all for weaklings." Beam hissed. "Even a useless former Med student like me could easily walk over you. All of you."
"Engineering students are not weaklings." Forth hissed.
Beam raised his eyebrow. "Okay, correction. Engineeing students of first year are weaklings. They put shame on their senior's faces. They have no balls. They...."
Forth really wanted to punch that smug smile off of Beam.

Flame Beneath The Snowfall
Alto is a world governed by Tones. Magic, as one might call it. Manifested through deep mental and physical conditioning, one can control the Tones in a way that is unique to them. The power to store items in gems, transfer life, affect a person's mind, and even the more primal abilities such as control of the elements. Those who have these supernatural abilities are called 'Vassals.' People that fully manifest their abilities are not as common as one might think, and not all Vassals acquire their ability through practice, given if conditions are met. In fact, those who had received much trauma manifest the Tones more frequently, albeit spontaneously. However, the rare kind of Vassals are those who manifest it from childhood. A gift, but not without its repercussions. Alto is stuck in a transitional era, where the line between modern and dated technology is blurred. One can travel to a city that has a tall skyline, bustling with people in sophisticated clothing, or a mere town governed by a lord, all the while riding on a powered vehicle. Cultures vary: Some turn to the more dated practices such as castes, others are more inclined to set equal footing on their people, led by nobility. Some are dedicated to become scholars, studying Alto's Tones, while others set foot on hunts, protecting lone towns from the creatures of some of the still-untamed lands. And the Vassals? Those willing are took under The Organization, an elusive group, its presence said to permeate all throughout Alto, taking care of Rogue Vassals that abuse their abilities and other businesses related to their side. But what is this story all about, you may ask? Well, set your sights on the upper portions of this huge landmass that is Alto. Yes, the 'whole' world is called Alto, but that is because the majority of the known people live on this large continent. Relieve yourself of the worrying tensions everywhere, and see the white snow. Trace the piercing mountaintops and focus your eyes between the valley. A town sits there. Mido. After realizing that the memories only left in his mind was the night of his town's imminent destruction in flames, a boy finds himself grasping for every fiber of his life as he lays down flat on the ground. Beneath him was soot mixed with the white snow. Fortunately, a group of investigators, who were supposed to answer their call for help, saved him from his sorry state. With a newfound second wind, but hampered by his loss of memory, he must solve his own case: Who had the audacity to set Mido, his town, aflame? Flame Beneath the Snowfall focuses on action, with a sense of adventure, but mostly the discovery of an outside world, and the protagonist's exposure to it. Add in a whisk of soft magical elements, and you get a story that I hope will be interesting to the readers. That is not to say that my work is without the sense of unnerving atmosphere, however. As a forewarning, there are elements of gore, horror, minor elements of mental trauma, etc. so it is not for all audiences. *The book is already completed. Although I have plans to continue the story (it would have to involve much larger scope in terms of world-building), I have yet to decide when to start the next entry.

Two exiles are forced by circumstances to travel together. Well, or one forces the other to follow. Hmm, no. One chooses to follow the other. Ah, forget it. It depends. Anyway, life is an adventure. Life in fantasy much more so. But, as in real life, some characters just seem to bumble foolishly along. Skah is one of those people. Meanwhile, others take it too seriously.
