《Freshman》04. Rock Star

"... shit... they're here." Beam turns his attention away from his hazer to his fellow first years.
At least ten students with their uniform walk fast towards Beam with anger on their faces.
Beam smiles to them. "Hi, guys..."
None of them are smiling back at Beam.
Beam whistles. Okay then.
The first year students look at their hazers.
"We are sorry, P'Forth, we are late. And, we are sorry we are not wearing our SOTUS uniform," One of them says.
Forth looks at his juniors. "You have to do 10 push ups for attending SOTUS late and another 10 for not wearing your uniform," he says.
They nod.
And, amazingly without Park yelling at them, they make a line, drop their backpack to the grass and do their punishment.
Right then, more students come until it is about a hundred.
Forth looks at the students who are now doing their punishment and then looks at Beam.
Beam is smiling at Forth. "Yes, P'Forth?"
"Why are you still standing?" Forth asks.
"Owh? Did I make any mistake? For what do I earn the honor to get punished? For attending SOTUS on time or doing my task perfectly? Which reminds me... you should check on their signature book," Beam says as polite as possible.
Forth's hazing team makes a standing ovation for Beam in their head.
And, then they look at Forth, waiting for his next step.
Forth has not much of an expression change. He just says coldly, "For disrespecting your Faculty."
Beam blinks. "Owh? Did I?"
Forth nods. "No matter how our Faculty is, never say that it is inferior to others," he says. "I don't even need to mention how you were disrespecting your seniors when you started bragging about yourself and who you were."
Beam blinks.
"Past is past. We honor history—not you as an individual but Engineering students as a team," Forth continues. "You failed because you see yourself as one person, not part of the team."
Beam blinks. He looks at Forth with his clear eyes. It is still sparkling with joy. "Yeah?"
Forth nods. "Yeah."
Silence.
Okay. Every year there is always a rebel, so....
Beam blinks. "Okay then. I'll do my punishment," He nods politely.

Beam says what?
Not even Forth himself believes what he just heard. He agreed just like that?
After that fucking long speech?
"What do you have for me?" Beam asks. He looks at Forth with a smiling face, waiting for his punishment.
Forth really wants to erase that smug teasing fucking-smile from Beam's face. "A hundred," He hisses. "For disrespecting your Faculty and seniors."
He won't be able to do that. That's five times of the punishment Forth gives to the students who are attending SOTUS late and even without their SOTUS uniform.
Beam smiles. He nods and lowers his body and then starts doing his punishment.
Forth blinks.
What the f....
Park can't even move.
Lam raises his eyebrows.
Max tilts his head.
Tul has difficulty in understanding this alien in front of him.
Ming is long gone. He is covering his face with both palms.
He is so dead.
Silence engulfs everyone as Beam is still doing his punishment when the other first years have already finished theirs.
They also don't understand what is in that former Medical student's head.
Maybe it's not a brain but some kind of imaginary cloud.
Or, maybe he had it once but studying Medical burned it.
They heard Medical is difficult.
But for someone to manage to roll in Medical and also Engineering, he is supposed to have enough brain.
Supposed to.
"... 98... 99... 100." Beam counts and then drops to the grass. He closes his eyes for a second before slowly getting up.
Forth grits his teeth as he looks into Beam's eyes.
They still have that sparkle in them.
Beam tries to catch his breath but he manages to remain calm.
He is used to people's anger.
Phana's anger...
Kit's anger...
His one-night stand's boyfriends' anger...
He is pushing too many buttons.
"Thanks, Nong, you can sit back down," Forth hisses.
"Thank you, P'Forth." Beam sits down along with the rest of the remaining first years. He looks to his left. He is the student who sat beside Beam during SOTUS before everyone had decided to drop SOTUS.
"Hi," Beam smiles and greets him. "We meet again. My name's Beam, what yours?"
He looks away from Beam without answering.
Beam raises his eyebrows. "Okay then. Nice to meet you too," he says sarcastically.

Forth looks at Beam and the remaining first years and then turns away. He says to Lam, "Lead the chant and then tell them to do the remaining signature task."
Lam nods.
Forth walks away from the field to the hazing team tent followed by Max.
Park and Tul stay in the field with the second year SOTUS team to lead the first year chanting rehearsal.
Forth scoffs when he sees Kongpob and his gang sitting inside the tent.
Ming hurriedly joins the remaining SOTUS team in the field.
Kongpob looks at Forth. He claps his hands sarcastically. "Good job... Did you just get punked by one first-year student? Moreover he is former Medical student?"
Max looks at Forth.
Forth is silent.
Kongpob walks to him. "Why don't you tame him before everything gets out of hand? This is SOTUS. Don't let him make a joke out of it."
Forth is still silent. He just looks back at Kongpob.
"Do you understand?" Kongpob hisses.
Forth nods. "I understand, P'Kongpob."
"Good." Kongpob hisses for the last time and then walks out of the hazing team tent followed by his gang.
Forth takes a long sigh.
Max looks at Forth. "What now?"
Forth looks back at Max.
"You should do something with that little devil. He is ruining our entire scenario. The first year is back to SOTUS even if they have to do the push-up punishment for every signature they don't have." Max says.
Forth sighs.
"He is worse than P'Kongpob in his first year," Max adds.
Forth looks at Max, un-amused. "Tell me something I don't know."
Max chuckles. "P'Arthit could bark on P'Kongpob because he was a rebel. But Beam... perfectly follows everything. So... find a way to tame him, boss."
Forth tilts his head. "What? You have any idea?"
"Make him your wife," Max says.
Just in time when Park, Lam and Tul are back to the tent.
Forth smacks on Max's head instantly. "He is Beam!"
"Ouch." Max caresses his hurting head. "So what? You are Forth-fucking-Jaturapoom."
"He is straight," Forth says.
"Owh, I thought you are gonna say that you aren't interested in him," Park says.
Forth smacks on Park's head this time.
"Hey!" Lam smacks on Forth's hand that smacks Park's head. He glares at Forth.
Forth rolls his eyes. "Are you dating or something? Why do you always side with him?"
Lam glares at Forth with both hands on his waist.
Park slides behind Lam and peeks his tongue to mock Forth.
"You..." Forth nearly beats up Park but Max pulls him back.
"Hoy, hoy, stop it. The hazing team should not be fighting with each other," Max says.
"Just wait until tomorrow," Tul says. "Beam would get his punishment for not having 800 signatures. He already has every girl's signature, I think. Boys won't give him any. Moreover after what he said about our Faculty."
*
But at the end of the day, Beam is having a line of male Engineering students in front of him, giving their signatures.
And then Beam walks home by passing his hazing team and greets them.
"Sawadee, P'Forth, P'Park, P'Lam, P'Max, P'Tul... Have a nice day. See you tomorrow."
When Beam walks past them, Park can't hold it anymore. "Oh God, I hate him so much."
"I was wishing that I'll make anyone, at least one, follow every SOTUS rule and do their task. And when someone actually does it, why am I annoyed?" Lam frowns. "I hate him too!"
Tul catches one of the boys that gave Beam a signature by queuing in the line previously. "Hey, what task did Beam do for you so you gave him your signature?"
"Beam got me Allene's phone number," he says.
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Dude.... He has all of the hot girls' phone numbers of the entire Engineering faculty. Everyone gets what they want," he says. "He even gave some useful dating advice. That man is a rock star!"
The five hazing team members are frozen.
What the f...
"But he despises our Faculty!"
"Owh, come on... he is the only one attending SOTUS even before the remaining first years join again. Is it not?" he says. "Beam is cool."
What?!
"He's a rock star!" He says again as he makes a super finger sign with his right hand and bids his goodbye.
Everyone looks at Forth.
Forth closes his eyes. Oh boy.
He is a rock star now?
O... kay then.

The Crisis on Planet 9
Welcome to the dream colony Planet 9, where the streets are stained by blood and the buildings are filled with human remains. The creatures roaming among the abandoned cars and flying vehicles resemble almost to perfection the mindless cannibalistic zombies born from the fictional nightmares of mankind. The cities were built in the retro style of the 21st century, but the technology of the 24th century is ever present, mostly within the bodies of those mortally challenged monstrosities. After all, what turned them into these things was not an evolved organic virus, an alien disease, or some sort of magical artifact, it was the corrupted and reprogrammed nanobots within their bodies. Originally, they were meant to heal them and help them access the tech around them, but now they were the origin of this disaster. Among the rotting dead and the Nano-Z, as the survivors called them, Kardian Pandora awakens two months after getting bit by one of them. A young teacher at the local Resonance High, foolish and naive in his own way, but now driven by the Sapient AI in the nanobots inside his body to hunt down other Nano-Z and learn how to survive. For now, his only goal is to become strong enough and rejoin his students and fellow colleagues, foolishly hoping to somehow be able to get back to the time when the undead did not rule the streets. Will Kardian be able to survive in this new savage world or will his naive outlook lead him to a dead end? Volume 1 can be bought on Amazon: Resonance High
