《It's Now or Never》Part 16

The next morning in the lab in the Avengers Compound, Bruce was fiddling with buttons on a panel as Scott in his Ant-Man costume is in front of his van, with the back open to show the Quantum Tunnel. Nat, Steve, and I stand beside Bruce as he starts the machine.
"Okay, here we go. Time travel test number one. Scott, fire up the uh... the van thing." Bruce says.
"Breakers are set, emergency generators are on standby," Steve calls out.
"Good. 'Cause if we blow the grid, I don't wanna lose tiny here in the 1950s." Bruce says. Scott, Nat, Cap, and I give Bruce a panicked look.
"Excuse me?" Scott says sternly.
"He's kidding. You can't say things like that!" Nat says in a harsh voice to Bruce.
"Just... It was a bad joke." Bruce says.
"You were kidding, right?" I ask Bruce.
"I have no idea. We're talking about time travel here. Either it's all a joke, or none of it is." Bruce says as he presses a few buttons.
"We're good! Get your helmet on, Scott. I'm gonna send you back a week, let you walk around for an hour, then bring you back in 10 seconds. Makes sense?" Bruce asks Scott.
"Perfectly not confusing," Scott says.
"Good luck, Scott. You got this." Steve says.
"You're right. I do, Captain America." Scott says proudly.
"On the count of three. 3... 2... 1!" Bruce presses a button, and Scott disappears into the Quantum Tunnel. In 5 seconds, Bruce presses a button, and someone in the Ant-man suit comes back. A teenager seems to appear in the suit.
"Uh, guys? This...this doesn't feel right." The teenage Scott says.
"What is this?" Steve asks to look over at Bruce.
"What's going on?" Bruce says looking down at the machine.
"That...who is that?" Nat says.
Bruce continues pushing another couple of buttons, trying to fix the problem.
"Hold on," Bruce says.
"Is that Scott?" Nat says.
"Yes, it's Scott!" Teen Scott gets sucked back into the quantum tunnel, and then comes back out as an old man in the Ant-Man suit.
"Ow! My back!" Old Scott says
"Oh my god," I say shocked, and let out a laugh. Steve shoots me a glaring look.
"What is this?" Steve says looking at the machine panel, confused about what's happening.
"Can I get a little space here?" Bruce says to Steve as he steps closer.
"Can you bring him back?" Steve asks.
"I'm working on it!" Bruce says back.
After a moment, another person appears in front of them. This time, it's a baby in the Ant-Man suit.
"It's a baby," Steve says even more frustrated than before.
"It's Scott," Bruce says proudly.
"As a baby!" Steve whines back.
"Jesus this isn't working," I say now a little frustrated as I throw my hands up and walk over to the machine panel to look at it.
"He'll grow!" Bruce says.
"Bring Scott back," Steve says sternly.
"When I say kill the power, kill the power," Bruce says to Nat.
"Oh my god," Nat says nervously.
"And... Kill it!" Bruce calls out.
Nat pulls down a lever, and everything shuts down. Scott, the normal Scott, gets spewed back out again.
"Somebody peed my pants. But I don't know if it was "baby" me or "old" me ...Or just "me" me." Scott says.
Bruce holds up his hands in a dramatic way.

"Time travel!" Bruce yells.
"What?" I snap at him.
"I see this as an absolute win!" Bruce says. I let out a scuffing noise and walk away from the group. Steve follows me. I walk outside and sit on the bench next to the entrance at the Avengers Compound, staring at the floor, deep in thought. Steve soon sits next to me.
"What are you thinking?" Steve asks calmly.
"That this is a complete failure and we can't fix anything," I say leaning back against the Compound wall. He could see Steve was trying to search for something to say.
"I know this is not the outcome we wanted, but maybe this is a sign for us to move on," I say to Steve softly, knowing this is not what he wants to hear.
"Maybe you're right. It's just hard to accept." Steve says.
"I don't wanna give up, but it's been 5 years and from the way, things were going in there, we can't control this quantum tunnel to go back and get the stones."
I reach out and grab his hand as we notice an Audi R8 speeding towards the entrance. We both stand as the car pulls up, but goes a bit too far, then reverses to be in front of Cap. Tony Stark then rolls down the window and looks at Cap and me.
"Why the long faces? Let me guess: He turned into a baby." Tony says to us.
"Among other things, yeah. What are you doing here?" Steve asks.
Tony gets out of the car and walks around to the back. He ignores Steve's question and places his hand on the trunk of the car. "That's the EPR paradox. Instead of pushing Lang through time, you might've wound up pushing time through Lang. It's tricky. Dangerous. Somebody shoulda cautioned you against it."
"You did," Steve said happily.
Tony opens his car's trunk.
"Oh, did I? Thank god I'm here. Regardless, I fixed it." He holds up his right hand, with a device on it.
"A fully functioning Time-Space GPS. I just want peace." Tony says making a peace sign with his fingers. "Turns out, resentment is corrosive, and I hate it."
"Me too," Steve says.
"We got a shot at getting these stones, but I gotta tell you my priorities: Bring back everyone? I hope, yes. Keep what I got? I have to, at all costs. And maybe not die trying will be nice." Tony says.
Steve looked over at me like he was asking for permission.
"What are you looking at me for. We now have an actual chance. Let's fucking do this." I said and for the first time in a while, I was actually happy. This possibility can now be a reality
"Sounds like a deal." Steve reaches out his hand to shake in the deal, in which Tony replies in the same way.
Tony reaches back into his trunk to pull something else out, Captain America's Shield. He goes to give it to Steve, who hesitates.
"Tony, I don't know..." Steve says unsure.
"Why? I made it for you. Plus, honestly, I have to get it out of the garage before Morgan takes it sledding." Tony says.
Steve takes it from him and fits his arm into the shield.
"Thank you, Tony," Steve says with a small smile.
"Will you keep that a little quiet? Didn't bring one for the whole team ...We are getting the whole team, yeah?" Tony asks.

"We're working on that right now," I say butting into the conversation of this bromance.
It was a quick reunion as everyone then went off to call the other avengers. Nat and I went into the office of the compound to call Nebula, Rhodey, and Rocket back to the compound. I sent Carol a little message knowing she was probably busy and would help when she could. The other Avengers came quickly after the messages were sent out and soon everyone had a job to do. Nat went to go get Clint who Rhodey found out where he was, Rocket and Bruce went to go get Thor and the rest of us stayed at the Compound to help in any way we could.
Soon everyone arrives back at the Avenger's Compound. I walk into the conference room where everyone is sitting and standing next to Steve. I look over through the glass walls of the room where I see Thor in a hoodie, drinking a beer, and walking through the compound's Testing Chamber. Tony is also there, walking in from behind Thor.
I nudge Steve's arm and point at Thor.
"Steve you are officially the hottest Avenger now," I say as Steve lets put a laugh and gives me a little shove.
"Drifting left. On the side there, Lebowski." Tony says as they walk in.
"How's it going, Ratchet?" Tony then calls out to Rocket when he sees the creature working on something.
"It's Rocket. Take it easy. You're only a genius on Earth, pal."
"Yup," Tony says unphased.
Steve then looks down at me and gives me a nod to follow him. I leave the conference room with the plans I was looking at and we walk into a side room where Scott is in a white and red suit, similar to the Ant-Man suit. We walk up to Bruce and Rhodey who are talking amongst each other.
"Time travel suit? Not bad." Rhodey says.
"Hey, hey, hey. Easy, easy!" Scott calls out as Bruce starts to touch the suit.
"I'm being very careful," Bruce says back.
"No, you're being very Hulky," Scott says.
"I'm being careful," Bruce says back.
Scott holds up the red glass bottle.
" These are Pym Particles, alright? And ever since Hank Pym got snapped out of existence, this is it. This is what we have. We're not making any more." Scott says.
"Scott, calm down!" Steve says sternly.
"Sorry. We've got enough for one round trip each. That's it. No do-overs. Plus two test runs." Scott says as he accidentally presses a button, and shrinks, and then grows back to his normal size. "One test run."
We all then go to the testing chamber. Steve, Nat, Tony, Scott, Bruce, Rhodey, Nebula, and I all stand at a control panel, presumably controlling the glass platform.
"All right. I'm not ready for this." Scott says with fear.
"I'm game. I'll do it." Clint says.
"No, I will. I've been doubting all of this since the idea was first brought up. I want this machine to prove me wrong."
I look over at Steve who gave me a nervous look before giving me an approving nod. Scott and I then left the room for a little bit so I could get into the suit. After changing quickly, I soon walk in wearing the suit Scott was moments before, the Quantum Suit.
"Hayes, now you're gonna feel a little discombobulated from the chronoshift. Don't worry about it." Bruce said to me.
I taking a position on the platform and take a deep breath.
"Wai-Wait a second, let me ask you something. If we can do this, you know, go back in time, why don't we just find baby Thanos, you know, and... " Rhodey says as he makes a hand gesture suggesting that they strangle baby Thanos with a rope.
"First of all, that's horrible," Bruce says disgustedly.
"It's Thanos." He says back.
"And secondly, time doesn't work that way. Changing the past doesn't change the future." Bruce says.
"Look, we go back, we get the stones before Thanos gets them... Thanos doesn't have the stones. Problem solved." Scott says.
"Bingo," I say.
"That's not how it works." Nebula says.
"Well, that's what I heard," Scott says to her.
"What? By who? Who told you that?" Bruce asks.
"Star Trek, Terminator, TimeCop, Time After Time -" Rhodey lists off.
Quantum Leap -" Scott says.
"A Wrinkle in Time, Somewhere in Time -" Rhodey continues.
"Hot Tub Time Machine -" Scott adds.
"Hot Tub Time Machine. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Basically, any movie that deals with time travel." Rhodey says.
"Die Hard? No, it's not one..." Scott says.
"This is known," Rhodey says.
"I don't know why everyone believes that, but that isn't true. Think about it: If you travel to the past, that past becomes your future. And your former present becomes the past. Which can't now be changed by your new future..." Bruce says to them.
"Exactly." Nebula agrees.
"So... Back To The Future's a bunch of bullshit?" Scott asks.
Bruce ignores him and turns to face me.
"Alright, Hayes. We're going in 3... 2... 1!" He tells me.
A helmet similar to Ant-Man's but white and more visible face pops on my head, and I soon go quantum. I fly through the quantum realm and into an opening. I then grow back to normal size. I look around and see where I am. It seems to be a party in a backyard, a family party. I turn around and see Sam playing football with my brother Riley. Riley throws the ball too hard and it goes over Sam's head and into the bushes. I run over to get it and call out to the two.
"Sam! Riley!" I call out.
"Hayes? Hey, are you there? I thought you were inside?" Sam calls out and Riley then runs towards Sam. Just before the two can reach me, all of a sudden I'm back in the Avengers Compound on the glass platform. I sit down on the platform, breathing heavily.
"Hey, hey. Look at me. You okay?" Steve says as he runs up to me.
I look up and hold out the football.
"Yeah, it worked. It worked." I said amused. Steve pulls me into a hug as I let out a laugh which causes me to start to happy cry.
"Where were you?" Steve asked as I try to control my sobbing.
"Sam's family party. Right before Riley, Sam and I were sent out on our second tours."
"This second tour was Riley's..." Steve tried to ask cautiously. I knew what he was implying and it was Riley's last tour. Steve stares at me, reading my expression.
"So Riley was there?" Steve asks. I nod as I lean my head on his chest.
"Are you sure you're ok?" Steve asks, holding me tighter.
"Ya. This just makes me want to get Sam and everyone back more than ever." I say as Steve helps me stand.
"We are gonna take a break and continue this later," Steve says to the others as he guides me back to our room in the Compound.
Steve walks me to our room in the compound. I am still on the bed as Steve closes the door and goes and gets me some water from our mini-fridge.
"Steve, really I'm ok, just a little shocked that this works and I got to see Riley again," I said as I sat up from the bed.
"I just wanna make sure," Steve said as he walked over to me and handed me the water bottle.
"Everyone must be excited now. We need to at least think about what to do." Steve says to me as he leads me back to the bed to sit down.
"Well then let's go discussing together," I say standing back up once we sit down.
"Hayes," Steve said sternly but in a calm voice. I stood still before sitting back on the bed.
"This is going to work," I said to Steve after we just sat there.
"I believe it will," Steve said smiling, looking over at me.
"Come here," I say to him, pulling him into a kiss. It was a long passionate kiss before I pulled away. We then just sat there in each other's presence.
After Steve believed I'd calmed down, we all make our way to the conference room where there were some hologram displays. We all sit around a table as Tony and Steve are pacing at the front, clearly leading the planning of the mission.
"Okay, so the "how" works. Now we gotta figure out the when and the where. Almost all of us has had an encounter with at least one of the six infinity stones" Steve says.
"Well, I'd substitute the word encounter for damn well near been killed by one of the six infinity stones," Tony adds.
"I haven't, I don't even know what the hell you're all talking about," Scott says.
"Regardless, we only have enough Pym Particles for one round trip each, and these stones have been in a lot of different places throughout history," Steve says.
"Our history. So, not a lot of convenient spots to just drop in." I say.
"Which means we have to pick our targets," Steve says to me
"Correct," Tony says to Steve.
"Let's start with the Aether. Thor, what do you know?" Steve says.
I look behind me and see Thor sitting in a chair with his sunglasses on. It is impossible to tell whether he is awake or asleep.
"Is he asleep?" I ask.
Thor then suddenly wakes up. He gets up and then walks over in front of the holograms.
"Where to start? Umm... The Aether, first, is not a stone, someone called it a stone before. It's more of a... and angry sludge thing, so... someones gonna need to amend that. Here's an interesting story though, many years ago...My grandfather had to hide the stones from the Dark Elves... [He wiggles his fingers to imitate a spooky ghost] Wooooh, scary beings. So Jane, [An image of Jane Foster pops up on the screen] Oh, there she is. That's Jane... She's... an old flame of mine... She... she stuck her hand inside a rock this one time... and then the Aether stuck itself inside her... And, she became very, very sick. So I had to take her to Asgard, which is where I'm from. And we had to try and fix her. We were dating at the time, you see. I got to introduce her to my Mother... who's dead, [Thor starts to look broken, and seems on the verge of tears] and oh you know, Jane and I aren't even dating anymore, these things happen though you know, nothing lasts forever, [Tony starts to push him back to his chair] I'm not done yet, the only thing permanent in life is impermanence." Thor says.
"Awesome. Eggs, breakfast?" Tony says.
"I'd like a Bloody Mary, thank you," Thor says to him.
We then all break and go into the kitchen to eat. We all sit around a table as I watch Rocket pacing on the table in front of everyone.
"Quill said he stole the power stone from Morag." Rocket says.
"Is that a person?" Scott asks.
"Morag's a planet. Quill was a person." Rocket says.
"A planet? Like in outer space?" Scott asks.
" Oh, look. It's like a little puppy, all happy and everything. Do you wanna go to space? You wanna go to space, puppy? I'll take you to space." Rocket coos to Scott like he's talking to a puppy.
We all then get back up and walk to the planning room where people start to write down and figure out where they ran into a stone.
I sit next to Nebula in the planning room and watch as Nat writing notes for their plan across from me.
"Thanos found the Soul Stone on Vormir." Nebula says.
"What is Vormir?" Nat asks.
"A dominion of death, at the very center of Celestial existence. It's where... Thanos murdered my sister." Nebula says. Nat looks up, and an awkward silence falls upon the room. She writes what Nebula has just said, and Scott tries to break the awkward moment.
"Not it," Scott calls out. I glance at him and give him a look.
Tony and Nat then lean on a table surrounded by papers, and Bruce lying down on the floor. I place my feet on the table as Steve hits them down, giving me a look like a dad would when their kid puts their feet on the car dashboard. I then just rest my legs across his lap which he doesn't mind. He rests his elbow on the chair arm to support his head has his other hand rubs my leg.
"That Time Stone guy..." nat says after a little while of us just sitting in silence.
"Doctor Strange," Bruce says.
"Yeah, what kind of doctor was he?" Nat asks.
"Neuro-stuff meets rabbit from a hat. Nice place in the village, though." Tony says.
"Yeah. Sullivan Street. Hmm... Bleecker." Bruce adds.
"Wait, he lived in New York?" Nat asked sitting up in her chair.
"No. He lived in Toronto." Tony said, trying to be funny.
"Guys, if you pick the right year, there are three stones in New York," Nat says.
Bruce all of a sudden sits up in surprise, Steve's head shoots up from resting on his hand, while I swing my legs down from his lap and sit up straight.
"Shut the front door!" Bruce says.
Tony then puts up holograms that display the different locations of the Soul and Power stone in 2014, then the Reality stone in Asgard 2013, and the Space, Mind, and Time stone in New York City 2012.
"All right. We have a plan. Six stones, three teams. One-shot." Steve says to all of us.
We then all get up and walk up and look at the screens determinedly.

He's a rock drummer, and his language is that of a rock drummer: slanged, duded, and frequently laced with profanity. He focuses on music, and makes decisions that even the author doesn't approve of. Goals seem foreign to him at points. What would you do if you were a musician, and the world fell apart and you no longer had an audience or band-mates. You'd be kinda lost. Kevin is. Arc 2 is a lot of Kevin not knowing what to do, going with the flow, and not being articulate enough to know that he doesn't know what to do. 1.
