I cursed as I saw the wolves making their way through the trees. Eight of them, and they were clearly the same as the demonic wolves we fought in the wolf den. Worse, we didn’t have a convenient choke point like in the caves to keep the wolves from circling around and attacking the twins, who were more vulnerable to the wolves’ attacks. Not an ideal situation. But life, no matter the world, never seemed to care what I considered ideal.
I ran forward, keeping to the ground as the trees here grew too close for me to be able to fly properly. I was not so proficient at flight that I could just hover, like some creatures, and trying to fly through the woods, while fighting, was a pain. Instead, I put my right side to the trunk of a tall tree, and unleashed a magical blast at the closest of the wolves. It hit, and jumped to one nearby, but clearly did not do as much damage as I would have hoped. Still, that would keep their attention off the twins, for a moment.
FDW2’s Attack (Melinda): 1d20+11 = 12 (Miss)
The wolves certainly wasted no time. They nimbly moved through the forest, darting around trees as they came towards us, towards me. But they were larger than normal wolves. Size conveyed power, but it also imposed restrictions, keeping them from all swarming around me. Only one could reach me at the moment, the one I’d hit first. That one was too focused on its ‘prey’ that it stumbled on an exposed root, just barely keeping its feet.
Frostmane’s Breath Weapon: 4d6 = 10 (Cold)
Recharge: 1d4 = 1 (1 Round)
FDW2 Fort Save: 1d20+8 = 11 (Fail) (5 Resisted)
FDW5 Fort Save: 1d20+8 = 23 (Success, Half Damage) (5 Resisted)
FDW6 Fort Save: 1d20+8 = 28 (Success, Half Damage) (5 Resisted)
Frostmane saw what I was going for, and charged forward into the gap between the tree I was standing beside, and another nearby. Unleashing his breath weapon, the cone of icy cold rolled over three of the wolves, but their hardiness and resistance to cold meant two of them shook it off, while the one that had attacked me was not badly damaged by the cold. Still, I was certain that we had the attention of the wolves.
Siora was no fool, either. She saw what we were doing, and ran in close behind us, before turning to the side, and unleashing her Legion of Sentinels spell, causing the ghostly sentinels to rise up to the side, blocking the next gap in the trees. If the wolves wanted to get around that side, they would have to either charge through the sentinels, and take the damage they dealt, or go a longer way around. Either way, she helped control the battlefield.
Vestele’s Caster Level check: 1d20+7 = 12 (Success)
FDW1’s Will Save: 1d20+6 = 9 (Fail) (Charmed)

Vestele followed her sister. Where Siora had turned to the right, she looked left, and set her eyes on the wolf that was about to turn the corner there. She cast a spell, and the wolf stopped in its tracks. The cleric breathed out a sigh of relief, before calling out for our benefit, “The one on the left flank is mine.” Looking back to her charmed wolf, she pointed to the next nearest wolf, and said, “Kill the other demon wolves!”

Melinda’s Concentration Check: 1d20+11 = 31 (Success)
Melinda’s Attack Roll (FDW2): 1d20+12 = 27 (Hit)
Caster Level Check: 1d20+8 = 12 (Success)
Damage: 1d10 = 9 (Bludgeoning)
Hideous Blow Damage: 4d6 = 17 (Magic)
My foot was surrounded in a violet light as I whirled around, bringing my heel down upon the wolf in front of me’s skull. I could feel the power of the hit, and the wolf clearly did not appreciate the magic either, for it was clearly staggered by the blow. It didn’t look like that one had much fight left in it.

FDW1’s STR check: 1d20+11 = 27 (Success)
FDW6’s Attack (Frostmane): 1d20+11 = 23 (Miss)
The charmed wolf bounded back the way it came, and ripped into the side of its fellow wolf, casting the creature down. The creature snarled, avoiding another snap of the wolf’s jaws as it stood, and returned the favor, its own fangs throwing the charmed wolf to the forest floor. Another wolf attempted to charge through the Sentinels to get behind us, but quickly proved why that was a poor idea. Even as the wolf I’d hit caught my arm in his fangs and drug me to the ground, the other wolves backed off, looking for other ways around the ghostly warriors.

Frostmane snarled a challenge, before sinking his fangs into the lesser wolf that had dared attack him. Blood flowed as the winter wolf’s powerful jaws ripped and teared at the wolf’s hide. And yet, the fiendish wolf remained standing, eyes locked on Frostmane.
Siora came up behind me, making sure to keep out of the reach of any of the wolves, and placed a hand upon my shoulder as I lay on the ground. “This should help, Melinda.” As she spoke, I saw my form begin to shimmer and blur, like when you’re looking through a heat haze at something in the distance. I grinned, and nodded my thanks to her.
Vestele’s Cure Light Wounds (Melinda): 1d8+5 = 10
Vestele followed her sister, keeping to the far side of me from the wolves, and placed her hand on my shoulder once Siora had pulled back. She smirked at me, and said, “The Queen won’t let you rest yet, Melinda!” I breathed easier as her healing magic flowed over me, making me good as new.

FDW2’s AoO (Melinda): 1d20+11 = 26 (Hit)
Concealment: 1d100 = 20 (Miss)
Melinda’s Attack (FDW2): 1d20+12 = 25 (Hit)
CL Check: 1d20+8 = 14 (Success)
Blast Damage: 4d6 = 17 (Magic) (Dead)
Eldritch Chain (FDW4): 1d20+12 = 18 (Hit)
CL Check: 1d20+8 = 14 (Success)
Damage: 8 (Magic)
With my wounds healed and Siora’s spell protecting me, I rose to my feet. The wolf snapped at me, but his fangs closed an inch to my side, thrown off by the wavering way my outline shimmered and shifted. With a savage grin, I unleashed a blast of violet power into the creature’s face, killing it, and jumping to the one I had chained to before, who was waiting to try and get a piece for itself.
FDW5’s AoO (FDW1): 1d20+11 = 22 (Hit)
Damage: 1d8+10 = 11 (Piercing)
FDW5’s Trip attempt: 1d20+11 = 25
FDW1’s STR Check: 1d20+11 = 16 (Fail, Prone)
FDW4’s Attack (Melinda): 1d20+11 = 22 (Miss)
FDW5’s attack (FDW1): 1d20+11 = 17 (Hit)
Damage: 1d8+10 = 17 (Piercing) (Dead)
FDW6’s Attack (Frostmane): 1d20+11 = 17 (Miss)
The charmed wolf attempted to get to its feet, only to be thrown down and savaged by the one it had attacked. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched the wolf end the charmed wolf’s life, even as the wolf I’d chained to twice advanced, and attempted to chew on my face, unsuccessfully. Still, I possessed enough awareness to see that the two last wolves, still uninjured, were sprinting around the trees, giving up on looking for an opening, and instead just moving for the encirclement.
Frostmane’s attack (FDW6): 1d20+9 = 27 (Hit)
Power Attack (5) Bite: 1d8+15 = 23 (Piercing)
Freezing Bite: 1d6 = 2 (Cold) (5 Resisted) (Dead)
Frostmane clearly had decided not to suffer even an inept pretender to his title as the baddest wolf around. With lightning quickness, he reached out with his powerful jaws and ripped out the throat of the wolf in front of him. The creature was dead before it even hit the ground. “Looks like they’re coming around the side.”
Siora’s attack (FDW7): 1d20+8 = 18 (Hit)
Damage: 1d6+2 = 7 (Piercing)
Siora grinned as she looked at the wolves circling around. “Well, let’s see how badly they want us!” With a laugh, she retreated into the midst of the ghostly sentinels, so that anyone who wanted to attack her would have to charge through her spell to get to her. That done, she raised her shortbow, and loosed an arrow, which landed solidly in the wolf’s shoulder. Not a grievous wound, but it was at least blooded now.
Vestele’s Attack (FDW7): 1d20+8 = 20 (Hit)
Damage: 1d8+1 = 4 (Piercing)
Vestele chuckled, as she joined her twin sister inside the mist. “Well, after the mess their friend made, I doubt they’ll be too keen.” That said, she raised her crossbow, and fired, her bolt striking not far from her twin’s arrow. “But all we have to do is keep them occupied until Frostmane and Melinda handle them.”

FDW4’s AoO (Melinda): 1d20+11 = 18 (Miss)
Melinda’s Attack (FDW4): 1d20+12 = 17 (Hit)
CL Check: 1d20+8 = 25 (Success)
Damage: 1d10 = 2 (Bludgeoning)
Blast Damage: 4d6 = 13 (Magic)
I chuckled at the twins’ antics. It was good that they could keep joking in the middle of combat, despite the fact that they were better suited for a different kind of battlefield. Dancing out of the way of gnashing jaws, I struck the wolf before me with my fist enshrouded with power, and by the yelp of pain, I was quite certain that the wolf did not enjoy the experience one bit.
FDW4’s Attack (Melinda): 1d20+11 = 22 (Miss)
FDW5’s Attack (Frostmane): 1d20+11 = 23 (Miss)
FDW7’s attack (Frostmane): 1d20+13 = 18 (Miss)
FDW8’s Attack (Frostmane): 1d20+13 = 23 (Miss)
Once again, the wolves regarded Frostmane as the biggest threat to them. Only the wolf I’d attacked focused on me, the rest trying to encircle Frostmane and attack him from all sides. Too bad, then, that his enchanted armor was more than up for the task!
Frostmane’s attack (FDW5): 1d20+9 = 14 (Hit)
Power Attack (5) Bite: 1d8+15 = 21 (Piercing)
Freezing Bite: 1d6 = 5 (Cold) (5 Resisted)
Frostmane’s Trip attempt: 1d20+10 = 25
FDW5’s STR check: 1d20+11 = 22 (Fail, Prone)
Frostmane howled a challenge at the wolves. Once again, he struck the wolf in front of him, jaws finding purchase on the wolf’s flank. With a vicious wrench of his head, Frostmane ripped a large chunk of meat from the wolf’s side, as he threw the creature to the ground.
Siora’s attack (FDW7): 1d20+4 = 22 (Hit)
Damage: 1d6+2 = 6 (Piercing)
Vestele’s Attack (FDW7): 1d20+4 = 22 (Hit)
Damage: 1d8+1 = 7 (Piercing)
Siora and Vestele did not bother sending any more spells at the wolves. Unlike me, they were limited in the number of spells they could cast each day. Better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Still, that didn’t mean they were doing nothing. The twins readied their weapons, and fired once again, careful to avoid Frostmane as they shot into the melee, once again striking their target.

A Wish
This is a story where there are no heroes and no villains. This is a tale about revenge, despair, and hope. This is a story where the truth is constantly hidden deep beneath the surface, and nothing is ever as it initially appears. The world is a stage. Every character has their part to play before their exit. They are actors, dancing on a stage set for them while searching for the truth behind the façade. Only time will tell whether they will be able to escape their predestined fate, to search for their happy end, or whether the promised end is nothing more than, a wish. Author's Note: Update will be very unpredictable as I travel quite a bit for my work.

Supreme Formation Immortal Sovereign
Falling under the Heavenly Tribulation, Ascending Celestial Oalur Kang finds that he's back in the past. Watch him pursue the Heavenly Path of Formations and rise to the peak of the Immortal Path! . . . . . . . . . Hello, this is F-Rank! This is my take on writing cultivation stories. Though I'm sure nobody cares, the intent behind this story was focused on creating a more or less logical cultivation system. I read several stories where the mc transmigrated to a cultivation world (not calling names to avoid unnecessary angst) and was able to completely break the cultivation system and the logic of the world because they had the power of science on their side and were able to think more logically than everybody else. Despite the fact that some characters in those stories were older than the scientific method of thinking and even the human civilization as we know it and the whole society was older than our human race. So I decided to write a story where things about cultivation make sense (as far as a magical world full of super magical people can make sense), so here we are. I don't know if I will be able to fulfil this purpose but I hope that the story will end up enjoyable. Can also be considered a prequel for my other story "Wasn’t my new life in a magical world supposed to be easy?" but has very little overlapping content and can be read as a stand alone story. Also available on Scribble Hub.
