《The Dragon of Dreams》Chapter 95: An Offer

Mid Afternoon - Late Spring : Kingdom of Kaelallan

"ID please sir!"

I pulled out my ID and flashed it at the guards.

Seeing the blue metal and gold crest, they knew I was someone pretty high up and immediately backed away. "Sorry for not recognizing you sir."

"You're fine, I don't blame you." -I'm already surprised enough that the royal family recognized me when I came back.-

Walking into the academy gave a different feeling from when I first came here.

Not only was it far quieter, but I didn't see a single commoner getting bullied. -Did they make some improvements?-

Once I got to the area outside of the library, I overheard a certain conversation in the lunchroom.

"Can you believe the noble kids got a whole week off because of the disaster a few days ago?"

"No, like why do they get a whole week off? They don't have to make up any of their missed work either.."

"Yeah, when I was sick last year I had to make up everything.. it sucked.."

-I guess that would explain why there is so little bullying..- It was just because the bullies weren’t here to do the bullying.

Hearing that they were getting onto a more private tangent I didn't care to hear about, I walked into the library.

"How's it going Mister Librarian."

The old man behind the desk raised an eyebrow. "Have we met?"

"Right, your memory might not be great since you're old. How about I give you something you will most definitely remember."

I focused my aura on him, I didn't even need to thin my reserve wall any since the aura at its thickest was only a bit less dense than before my dragon sleep.

His face instantly paled as he recognized the aura. "I'm sorry for not recognizing you.." He quickly lowered his head, not being able to look me in the eyes.

I got a little closer and leaned over the desk. "I put up a little barrier so no one else can see or hear us." I looked around to make sure the other kids in the library didn't think anything was different. -Hopefully they stay none the wiser.- I used light magic to just show an empty desk.

The librarian started breaking into a cold sweat after hearing I put up a barrier.

"Thanks for all that information, you saved Kaelallan. Good job."

The old elf tensed up. "Th..thank you.."

"I did tell the royal family I got the information from you so just heads up.” I took a moment to think when I came up with an idea. “If you want to prove yourself trustworthy I can keep them from investigating you." Although I had no actual proof that this man was a spy from the tower, I had an extremely strong hunch.

"What do you want me to do?"

-Okay so he is hiding something.. lets see if it's the tower.- "Well, how about you leave the tower first."

He tensed up again. "I have no idea what you-" He slowly looked up but lost his breath when he looked into my eyes.

"So if it's not the tower, who is it?"

"It's.. the tower.."

"Sweet, thanks for making it easy on me. That's a step in the right direction." -To think my hunch was right on the money..-

"So what else do I need to do besides distance myself from the tower?" His head was held so low that it was nearly touching the desk now.

"How about you become Kaelallan's information broker?" -They could use it.. plus it'd be nice to keep my eyes on the place without needing to be here.- Although I had little care for a humanoid’s life, if anyone in the royal family were killed while I was gone, it'd leave a bad taste in my mouth.

"..."

It was as if I could hear the cogs turning in his head. "It's up to you. One option, you get tortured to death for information about the tower, but the other option, you make massively more money than you are now and you will grow your.. 'business' immensely. You will need to go report to the royal family directly though, I will just.. put in a good word for you." I crossed my arms and looked down at his bowed head.

"Okay.. I'll do it.."

"Sweet.” I looked down and noticed he seemed nervous about something. “Since you seem worried about something I'll leave you with a little note." I leaned over the desk by his ear. "Your previous employers will be gone before they hear that you've left."

His eyes went wide.

Seeing he understood what I meant, I dispersed the barrier. "I'll be on the top floor if you need something. Seeing how reluctant you are, I'll give you until I leave to figure out what you want to do… And one more thing to add, don't even think about running.”

With the barrier down, my voice resonated through the room, making quite a few people turn their heads to look at me.

Most of them got caught in a trance because of my aura filling the room so I could see everything, but I had had long since gotten used to them.

As I started heading up the stairs with Ilios, I overheard some kids whispering on the other side of the library.

"Did you see him come out of nowhere? What was that?"

"It might have been some high tier magic.. look.. even the librarian bowed to him.."

The other kid looked over at the desk and saw the librarian just frozen in a deep bow. "We shouldn't try to pry if it has nothing to do with us.. let's just.. mind our own business. So what were you reading again?"

-What a smart kid..- It was pretty shocking to see a kid that had such good judgment.

-Well let's get back to what I was doing.-

I came to the library for one reason. I needed to check the top floor for any information regarding gods and ancient fenrir.

I was pressed to try and learn things about the ancient fenrir since even mother didn't know much, but once I thought about it, -its even more unlikely that humanoids have that information..-

During the great war, most of them were killed and history was.. reset in a way, so the likelihood that I was going to find any information, let alone accurate information, on ancient fenrir here was abysmal.

-I would have better luck in a demihuman nation too..-

The ancient fenrir are the gods who the elves and demihumans worship, so if I went to one of those nations, I'd likely be able to find something.. even if the information isn't accurate.

-Well while I'm here I should at least take a look.. I should be able to find some information on other gods at a minimum.-

I finally made it to the top of the stairs and noticed someone else was here as well. An extremely short elven woman in a robe.

-Why is she here?-
