《Dreamland》Chapter 24 - Mayhem

He watched me, surprised.
As if to confirm his unspoken words, a bullet hit with a thud on my shoulder, ricocheted from the bone and hit the ground between us, raising a small cloud of dust.
A pained grunt escaped me whilst I scrambled for my long daggers. This was a hunter's shot with a skill. No time to fit my katars now; daggers should do it. I spelt a > to ensnare the mastodont closer to us.
The raids were coming closer, and their aim was more precise now.
I said > after healing both of us, then I added: “fifty-five seconds free kill, healers first!”
I would have spelt darkness earlier if we had decided to run. To fight them, I needed to wait until the raids came inside the spell area.
I was angry. Well, yeah, this is Mephi. Ten, fifteen seconds ago, I was sitting there, dreaming peacefully and eating my lunch by the fire, for a bunch of idiots to start 'shooting first, ask questions later' and transform my beautiful china dishes into shingles. Yet I probed first to check if they have any high levels with them.
Angry, but I did not lose it completely.
Juicy thing: I could send probes in all directions at once with the 'fairy on my skin'. I did not have the problem of having to choose which way. Nice extra mana bonus I did not expect.
>
High levels would have made things more complicated; however, I was happy to find out that there were none around. Well, except for the Lynx.
An additional bonus: they all felt me. It must be a nice psychological bonus one can achieve simply by unleashing their aura.
My time to act; I've already lost 5 seconds of darkness.
The screams and shots were now muffled by the dark fog. A lot fewer shots and spells, as they were blind.
One of the mastodonts mooed loudly, somewhere to the right, trying to provoke us. Yeah, nice try! Keep on trying, buddy!

Short-range fighters appeared, coming for the kill. Much too early. I kicked hard left and right, mostly hunters' pets, like the wolf I just sent yowling, flying to the side.
Unfortunately, I had not scanned the area properly, as I should have done, before spelling darkness, but I had a raw guess of the directions they were coming from. In addition, they were noisy: shouting, screaming, calling each other.
Whilst we also could not see much, the raids were utterly lost at concentrating their firepower. I heard screams and curses as the Lynx was ravaging the lines of the long-range fighters and, from time to time, the characteristic agonizing scream of an elf dying. He is on the healers now, and the best healers are druids and elves.
I chose a different direction.
I said my > spell and ran towards the noisiest area.
I love this spell. It allows me to move at more than double speed, and in a way, I think it even encourages my brain to work faster. When under this spell, I can analyze and take decisions instantly.
I hit a rogue in the darkness that I threw meters back with a hit of my shoulder. In the last fraction of a second, it was that sudden movement I was able to do with the hand that skewered his belly with the dagger. This is what I mean brain working faster, taking decisions instantly, my muscles reacting with lightning speed. Now, as I think about it, it must speed the flow in my nervous system too?
Then suddenly an archer. Our eyes met, and I hesitated a moment, as she looked so much like Alice, but the next moment she stepped backwards, preparing to shoot an arrow at me, so I kept close, hit her hard with the left elbow, breaking her jaw then planted my right dagger into her belly.
Dark liquid erupted over my hand, and a warm gelatinous mass covered it. Hell, do they have to make it so realistic? I do not remember, in any version before, effectively getting the bowels splashing like this. It was just blood and muscles or so. Even the blood splash was now much more realistic. Maybe too much.

Before she fell, my other hand came up and severed her head with a swipe. I saw her eyes blinking as her neck was torn in an impossible angle, whilst a spell-heal already started on her broke.
Forty seconds of darkness left, and I killed only an archer merc! The rogue was probably healed. Lucky me, suddenly I met the healers' group. This is the Achilles tendon of any raid. Thirty-seven seconds left. With both daggers, I started cutting in fast strokes left and right, cutting throats in a frenzy. Fountains of blood splashed around me. The strong iron smell invaded my nostrils. My hands moved in a blur.
In five seconds, five were lying dead around, two were running, and one managed to disappear in the fog, but I got the other one. Hack, hack.
Fifty seconds is a long time, notably so when one acts at double speed. I ran towards the next noisiest group, cutting through everything that appeared suddenly out of the fog. My only fear was not to meet Spartacius accidentally. Hopefully, he stays put there where I sent him.
Hack, hack, blood splashing over me, jump, hack, bowels, hack, more blood, hack, jump, hit, hack, more blood. More gore, more iron and bowels smell.
Fury and panic were guiding me. Fury for the unprovoked attack, panic that we will not do enough damage, the darkness ends, and the raids can again focus on us. How many will remain? One hundred? One hundred twenty?
I heard one mastodont coming from the left and jumped to the side, avoiding its charge in extremis. At the same time, I pushed as hard as I could, the right blade cutting through its belie as it ran beside me. Its intestines splashed over the field. As the beast fell, I managed to roll and jump back on my feet.
The beast screamed in agony as I continued my chase through the darkness.
Another two seconds of darkness, another kill. I stood on my feet unmoved, listening, concentrated on hearing their steps, whilst a strange silence was now covering the field. The fog slowly dissipated. All noises were far away from me. Where were those hundred feet trampling the earth? Even the dying mastodont stopped its high-pitched screaming, only a heavy breath sounding like a gurgle was coming from its place.
My heart was pumping crazily whilst my body was trying to recover after the speed spell. There was always a bit of a harsh transition after the spell, but I do not remember it being so… dramatic? I breathed heavily whilst rivulets of sweat ran over my forehead, dropping over my nose, between my breasts, mixing with the blood, their blood, splashed all over me.
The body of my last victim accelerated its fall to normal speed, landing with a thud on the ground whilst blood droplets fell from my dagger. I heard my lungs filling with air. I took a long, deep breath and fell to my knees.
The sudden tiredness, the nauseating iron, shit and guts smell made me puke. I rested on my hands, churning out my pixelated food. Is it supposed to be so? Sweat droplets aligned over my nose and fell over the mix of grass and puke. Sweat ran along my arms. Gosh, I must be stinking.
How do they do this? How can I see everything at double speed when for every other player, it is running normally? It is true that not everybody can use the speed spell, even its quality is very much player dependent, as many spells in Mephisto are, but what does this mean then? Can it be that the fairy bonus has also accelerated my speed spell?
I threw out another batch of freshly chewed food on the ground. Fuck.

Please note: the Sexual Content tag is there due to a single brief plot-relevant scene, which has a warning at the beginning. For other details, read the full description below. Rating breakdown, since that should be public info: 5 x 5*, 2 x 4.5*, 1 x 0.5* During a blackout, a frail and ragged old woman stops to ask for a glass of water from a backyard barbecue party. Given a good supper instead, she looks around the group, and tells them, "Be who and what you truly are." Days later, seven of the people from the barbecue find themselves drawn into a trap laid by a pair of wizards and their accomplices, who kidnap them into a bubble reality. All seven, who have known each other all their lives, are informed that they are not in fact entirely human: they have active fae blood, due to a series of conditions culminating with the blessing of the elderly fae woman. The transformation into fae form comes as a shock: all seven, whether originally female or male, find themselves now unreasonably beautiful women. More urgent even than that, though, is their captivity. Getting back to the real world is a higher priority than this metamorphosis that rapidly begins to feel natural... but this is only the first step, as the diverse types of fae blood they carry begin to surface. With no resources except themselves, how can they escape this prison? If they succeed, how can they possibly reclaim their lives? Just how many other faelings have been kidnapped, anyway, and what happened to them? And is there a way to make sure that their captors never put anyone else through this? Back in the real world, Kayla, who learned long ago to trust her gut instincts, is absolutely certain that something is very wrong. The pattern in the list of missing friends is easy to spot, but makes no sense at all. Then a young woman turns up at the backyard gate who knows more than she should, and even though her explanation makes even less sense, every instinct tells Kayla that Riley is her only way to get them back. If they're not quite what they were, well, that's a bridge to cross later... Just a little note: I'm a big believer in endings that are upbeat but not candy-coated, and not a fan of grim-and-gritty or of glamorized violence. These are adults in a difficult situation. However, no one gets raped, and the physical violence is, all things considered, fairly minimal. There is some harassment, sexual and otherwise, and also some mild restraint and mild verbal abuse. Complicating factors are generally wizardly or fae in nature. If I need to warn you about gender in this being all over the map, some of it reality-based rather than fantasy-based, highly diverse sexuality, or that there is (especially later) some indirect fetish/BDSM imagery and honest character discussion, then you probably should just avoid everything I write. :-) Also available on Scribble Hub.

The Othryrian Archives
"Humanity is on the cusp of their Great Expansion. It will be the first time in history that they’ve reached beyond their own solar system in an attempt to colonize the galaxy. Or, at least, so they thought. Peeling back the veil of time, The Empire of Sol has uncovered vestiges of a secret genetic program on the far flung planet of Hod. The advent of the Empire’s ancient enemy could upset the careful balance of power throughout in the Sol System. When Hod is invaded by the Empire, Andros Aeton is pressed into their service and his people are held hostage. Unbeknownst to him, factions within the Empire vie to use him to their own ends. He must claim his heritage if he has any hope of escaping the clutches of the forces that seek to use him." This is a work in progress. Major editing will be done after the book is complete, so there will be egregious typos and parts that make no sense whatsoever. Please feel free to point any and all of these things out. Chapters WILL get edited, and that editing might break earlier chapters. I will attempt to keep readers apprised of all changes. As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated. The cultivation (and alchemical) tiers are not at all necessary to understand the book, but exist because in the context of the book it would be important. I'm more than happy to write up any alchemical ideas you've ever had, totally not using this as an excuse to reduce my creative thinking hours...
