《Combat Empire》Beaudoin

With Lucas’ mind fairly calm, he deduced what was happening, fairly quickly.
“Gravity..”
Regis looked back towards Lucas before looking back at the man on his side, a smile on his face.
“See, Baylor.”
Baylor rolled his eyes. “You act like the kid’s ’s the second coming of the Emperor. Children know what going down means and you even slowed it down for him to comprehend.”
“The kid has a name.” Regis frowned.
“Simply put, Fiona’s right. Lucas is simply too young. He’d feel awkward and it would be simply too hard for him to adapt and the other students and teachers to accommodate him.”
“That’s not a problem. Have the teachers know about his arrival and make sure nothing happens to him. He’ll learn to adapt on his own. He’s not a baby.”
Baylor looked down at Lucas, seeing only what he could call a baby.
“Still-”
Baylor was cut off when he suddenly began feeling much heavier.
“We should.., at least, have him take the official test.”
Regis seemed to ruminate on it for a few seconds before nodding. “Fine.”
“Then, please release my sister from the ground.” Baylor felt the pressure on him decrease.
Suddenly, Fiona flew up a few meters. “YOU-”
“For fuck’s sake, Fiona, it won’t be that big a deal if we give the child a chance.” Baylor’s voice took on an exasperated tone.
“HE BROKE MY NOSE!”
“Lucas didn’t break your nose, Fiona, it was Regis.” Baylor began rubbing his nose bridge.
The fury in Fiona’s eyes was almost tangible, conjuring a sort of heat that fell right on her supposed brother, making him sweat.
Immediately, though, that sweat was dispelled with a particularly frosty look from Baylor.
“Lucas go start packing. And prepare for a ceremony tonight. If you pass their test, you’ll be the youngest person in history to attend their academy.”
“Is it a good school?”
Regis nodded. “It’s a decent school.”
Fiona nodded in agreement, despite herself. “One of the best in the Kingdom of Liyonne.”
Lucas, then, began to walk out without any sort of bye. The man who’d led him here, Flandin, began to lead him out.
Once they were out of sight, Fiona immediately looked towards Regis, her voice barely above a whisper. “You do realize the extent of the crime you’ve committed by harming me this much. It’d be disastrous if it were to get out.”

Regis didn’t bother reciprocating her tone, and simply turned towards her. “Perhaps through negligence or perhaps on purpose, you nearly destroyed my grandson’s eardrums. I managed to restrain you before you did any damage. In the process, you broke your nose-”
“Regis-” Baylor attempted to interject.
“And now there’s no crime you can pin on me that would remain, assuming that I could get charged with a crime at all.”
Fiona opened her mouth to retort but she was suddenly hit with a wave of silence. She couldn’t hear anything, not even her own breathing. She glared at Baylor but let him speak.
“Count Regis, you assaulted her first. Her screaming was simply in retaliation. I’ll be forced to report this crime to the King and seek proper reparation. Besides this, a carriage will come to take your grandson to our academy in a week. If you could have your servants see us out.” Baylor kept a level tone as he got out of his seat and walked his sister to the door.
Regis nodded, watching as a maid guided them out. “Of course.”
Lucas absorbed himself in his thoughts once again. He hadn’t expected to go to an actual school so soon. If it was Earth, then sure, he would go to school as he was five years old. However, this was not Earth. Judging by the fact he would be, by far, the youngest kid at whatever academy he was going to, the school age was much higher in this world or, at least, in this country.
He had mixed feelings. On one hand, it’d be much better to get an academy-level education instead of reading, sparring, and the occasional lecture. On the other, having to be around kids all day would kill him. It was already bad enough with his barely pubescent sister. A bunch of random rich kids who likely thought they were superior to each other, let alone him, someone much younger than them, would be several times worse.
On top of this, due to his age, there’d definitely be some bias against him from teachers. It would all be a massive bother to work with.
Still, he was 100% doing it. The feeling of growing stronger was so much more tangible with magic than with normal strength or technique training. On top of that, if he was going to truly become Emperor, consistent training from childhood was necessary.

His thoughts were suddenly interrupted when he found that he’d nearly walked into a wall. He turned, finding that he was alone.
A frown crept onto his face. Even if he hadn’t been paying attention, he wouldn’t completely lose track of the guy he was following, Flaccid or whatever his name was. Even if he did, Flanger should’ve made sure he was following.
That was unless he was angry about being punished for whatever Lucas had done. He was still a bit confused about what exactly had been the problem but hadn’t bothered asking.
He used his mana sense to look for a nearby servant to ask for help, finding nothing except what looked like a man and a few women. He could only guess because as soon as his mana sense touched them, they began to disappear. It was weird but they were the only people he could see with his limited range.
He began walking towards them, turning a few corners before coming face to face with a man who looked just vaguely familiar. He’d definitely seen the man before but he must’ve forgotten his name. Judging by the expression on his face, he couldn’t recognize Lucas either.
“Hello, do you know where-”
“Sorry, kid, I gotta go. Just follow the room numbers, though, or ask for a maid.”
Before Lucas could even finish his question, the man ran off. However, a lightning bolt had struck Lucas’ mind. He’d entirely forgotten about the room numbers. He turned to see the guy had already left, shrugged, and began walking back to his room.
Nathan Cazenarch kept speedwalking, running into several other people as he sped through the halls. He stopped at a door, adjusting his hair before pulling out a key to open it. It was originally completely dark but after turning on the light, he wished it stayed dark.
A teenage girl sat on one of the chairs in his living room, her silver-blonde hair dropping down to her shoulders. She had an almost pixieish appearance that was ruined by a perpetual frown.
“Get the fuck out of my room, Daphne, I got a girl coming over.”
Daphne’s frown slightly lessened as her lips curled into a smile. “That would be me.”
Nathan stared at her for a second before shaking his head. “I don’t do incest.”
Daphne’s lips curled again but this time into a grimace. “I meant there is no girl coming over. I arranged this so we could talk.”
“Lame”, the man turned to reopen the door and leave.
“Get your head out of your dick! Just answer a couple questions for me, ok? You can have a maid if you want.”
Nathan closed the door, sighing, before taking a seat. “No need. What’re your questions?”
“So as you know, I’m looking for father’s-”
“I asked for your questions not your life story.”
“Do you know who Lucas is?”
“Lucas? Yeah, I know a guy named Lucas, down in Sarrue. Why?”
“A kid named Lucas, you know”, Daphne’s exasperation and annoyance were starting to show. “A Cazenarch. He’s supposed to be our nephew. You know who he is or anything about him?”
“Lucas? Yeah wait I think I do kinda know who that is. He’s Sebastian’s kid. Like four years old. Something something about a golden soul?”
“What’s that?” Daphne leaned in.
“I forgot. It was a while ago.”
She leaned in even more. “Can you remember?”
Nathan looked down at her for a second. “No.”
Daphne dropped back. “Fine, can you at least tell me who told you so I can ask them?”
Nathan got up, shaking his head. “No.”
“Wait, you know what he did, though, right?”
“Nope.”
“He killed a man.”
“No- wait what?”
Daphne smiled a little, finally attracting Nathan’s attention. “Yeah, he killed a man. Batain got ambushed by a couple villagers but Lucas managed to kill one while Batain got out of the trap.”
“What's that gotta do with me?” Nathan narrowed his eyes.
“I thought you would care since he’s going to your old school right now.”
“.. my old-”

But for now the last surviving son of House Rotwald is on the run. *This story is as much about the monsters as it is about the people facing them. Some become allies while others become wet stains on the floor. I firmly believe that villains can make for some of the most endearing characters. Monsters need not be sour and droll. Have a bit of fun - indulge in a bit of villainy. Carus - Libertas
participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge and also having a go at NaNoWriMo this November. This was a first draft published as it was written for Nanowrimo November 2020. A little rough around the edges, I hope to come back and edit at some point, and then continue the story on. In the grand scheme of things Elias was nothing special. Which was why he was surprised by a random company on a new colony planet buying out his contract. That was the problem with the large companies that ruled the colonies, once they owned your contract, they owned you. Imagine the greater surprise when he learnt that the new company held the promise of freedom. Not from the constant battle against the Swarm that were also trying to claim the colony planets for their own. Nor from the Crust, the mysterious substance that covered the same planets and held the resources they all fought for. No, the freedom from being oppressed by those with more power and to finally decide where to go and where to set down roots and call home.
