《One Versus Destiny》Chapter 115: Invasion

Our squad set off from Ipigal. The giant transformer was carrying the explosive. Our critical node was to the southeast of the city, pretty close to the edge. Towards the south, there was a gate. We, and quite a few other squads, would go though the gate. We'd subdue the guards and move towards our nodes. My squad's node was in a research base. The street was populated by sapphire-categories, so I'd hide all our auras, then we'd go through the sewer. There was a sewer entrance in the facility, so we'd go there. The guards were only gold-category, and the researchers were silver. We'd kill the guards and subdue the researchers, before exploding the node. Before we exploded the node, we'd pick up some researchers into a dimensional storage. The node being destroyed would quickly destabilize the area, so we'd portal into my soul house. We'd wait ten or so minutes before coming out, because the tremors and spatial activity shouldn't have been too powerful by then. the tremors then were as strong as a silver-category jumping, and the spatial tears were nothing a spatial construct couldn't take care of.
That was when we looked.
Wopoimcl was standing outside one of the cities. The city was exploding in a fiery shower, which, we had been told, was what would happen when all the nodes we were targeting were destroyed. We wouldn't activate the twenty-seventh and final device, that was a job for the jade-categories. It looked like some powerful jade-category spell.
After that, the plan went off without a hitch, at least at the start. We subdued the guards and got into the sewers. It was stinky, but I had seen worse (a destroyed rocket full of horse dung in a garbage orbit).
When we entered the facility, there was a problem. One of the guards, that all the others had been defending, had been casting a long spell. We only got there after she was done.

I became extremely slow. Luckily, I had speeding afflictions, so I went back to my roots.
"Rot away, dead body."
It was quickly becoming one of my most used powers. It summoned a bunch of thick mold, slowing her down drastically. I used that opportunity to cast a barrage of afflictions.
"We almost all die, but you will die faster. Freeze, bloodless one. Ice from outside is nothing, so ice from within shall arise."
The others had all casted one or two spells by now.
That was when the roof caved in. The guard was also slowed down to our level, but the roof caving in had advantages.
I looked up. The giant shifter was in giant form.
The shifter used the high speed of a giant to step on the guard, creating a gory mess on the floor. The giant shrunk down to normal size.
"Now, how do we get out of this temporal dilation?" Asked Bob.
"Can't Arjun use cleansing fire?" Asked Aryav.
"Cleansing of sins, step forth."
I remembered the first time I had seen magic in action. The volcano under the waeswars. The cold, hard chilling voice. It was still so vivid, being a ten-year old who was told magic didn't exist, but then seeing magic. It only reinforced that Glassfay was a hallucination, but now I knew better. Eleven years is a long time for a twenty-one year old.
"Arjun, stop staring off into space. We need you to activate the explosive."
It was the group diamond-category.
I nodded, then we set off at a brisk pace. I, Aryav, the giant shifter, and the diamond-category lead. We subdued any researchers we found on the way.
I hadn't had any moral calms since I was ten. I had come to terms with the killing in the world at a very young age. But the time I had spent on Earth hadn't left me. I still remembered what Doom had said, the first night.

"When you are not working as a Worldsafer, it is a great thing. Parties, riches, glory, all those things. Worldsafers only work three to four hours a day, so most of the time, life is great. It is during those hours that you earn it. Killing dangerous monsters. Walking through fire so no one else has to. Are you sure you want to take this path? I understand, Worldsafers have superhero and superhuman abilities. It is also a very dangerous path. If you survive, you have great honor-but also great guilt. It is our human capabilities that make us who we are. A godly-category isn't a human. They are simply an extension of the world's magic.
I have seen many a Worldsafer who went down the path of moral decay or overwhelming guilt eating you up. If you can survive that, yet stay human, that is what makes a truly great Worldsafer. Do you know how there are platinum-categories in the Worldsafer hall of fame? Not supreme abilities. Not riches. Human qualities. Mortal qualities. Do you know how the elemental kings, the most extreme manifestation of evil, were started? They were Worldsafers gone astray. They lost all their mortal and moral capability. They became extensions of the most evil evil. Death itself."
It was still important. Killing had become a part of life and I couldn't stop, but I needed to stay moral. So I stopped everyone else.
"When I was ten years old," I began, and saw the diamond-category gesture to keep going, "I was training to be a Worldsafer. Doom told me this, yet no one here is following it, capturing researchers like this. Here it is:
'When you are not working as a Worldsafer, it is a great thing. Parties, riches, glory, all those things. Worldsafers only work three to four hours a day, so most of the time, life is great. It is during those hours that you earn it. Killing dangerous monsters. Walking through fire so no one else has to. Are you sure you want to take this path? People were nodding in approval, except the diamond-category. "Doom was training you to be a Worldsafer, not a politician. This is politics of Anti-Death. I serve them"
People were looking at each other. Doom nodded in approval.
We charged.
