Chapter 41: Guerilla Warfare Part 3
The Arrows were celebrating the successful execution of the plan, they became even more confident in the plan when they saw how effective it was.
“Stop celebrating just yet, our job is still not finished.” Gunnar halted the cheering of the Arrows. “Celebrate after we finish our mission.”
Even though a lot of Arrows didn’t respect Gunnar as a leader, they still respect him as a good hunter. Thus, no one objected to his words and also agreed with him. The Arrows were watching the Blood Hunters’ every move, sometimes they deliberately exposed their position when they saw that the Blood Hunters were starting to let their guard down.
They want the Blood Hunters to know that they were being watched, so they would be forced to stay alert at all times, exhausting them even more. The Arrows were just waiting for the sun to go down to commence their next attack.
They decided to divide their group into two, the first group would do the scouting and the remaining group would rest, so they would have the stamina for the night attack. After a long time, the Arrows stop exposing themselves to the Blood Hunters, to make them think that their enemies finally gave up, and let their guard down. So, they could rest.
The Arrows were already prepared for the night attack for a long time, some of them were even excited and found this Guerilla Warfare amusing. The feeling of toying with their enemies was very new to the Arrows, they didn’t know tactics could be this fun.
When the night came, The Blood Hunters started to feel tired. The Bald Man noticed the exhausted looked of his hunters. Therefore, he decided to let them rest. Of course, he chose some of them to guard while the others were resting. Those who had been chosen complained that they were also exhausted, but the Bald Man didn’t care.
“I DO NOT CARE IF YOU ARE TIRED!” The Bald Man screamed in annoyance. “IF I SAW EVEN A SINGLE ONE OF YOU RESTING, I WILL KILL YOU MYSELF!”
The Blood Hunters didn’t talk back anymore, they knew how scary their leader was. Of the 4 leaders of the Blood Tribe, This Bald Man was known to be the most ruthless, merciless, and brutal of them, so they didn’t have any courage to say anything to him.

Soon After, The Arrows finally move in the direction of the Blood Hunters. Although they stopped monitoring their movement, they still easily find the whereabouts of their enemies because of their campfire.
This time the one doing the attack was the other half of the Arrows, Berus was included in this group. The Arrows move silently when they were near to the location of the Blood Hunters, they didn’t want them to know that they were here, or the plan would not be fully effective.
Even though the Blood Hunters guarding were scared of the Bald Man, the motivation of doing their jobs was almost nonexistent. Thus, making their duty sloppy and didn’t notice the immediate danger surrounding them in the dark.
When the Arrows were finally in the position to attack, they didn’t waste any more time and rained the sleeping Blood Hunters with arrows. The Bald Man instantly open his eyes when he heard the screaming of his hunters. He immediately stood up and observe the situation.
“WE ARE UNDER ATTACK! WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!” Screamed the guarding Blood Hunters.
The commotion was even bigger than the last time, because of the fatigued, the reaction of the Blood Hunters became even slower. They were good fighters, but they were not trained to become organized. Because the Blood Hunters consist of a hunter from a different tribe that was forced to join the Blood Tribe, training them to become organized was almost impossible.
As a result, when a commotion like this arises, the problem became even more noticeable. As the chaos and confusion continued the Bald Man finally lost his temper. He raised his right hand holding a stone spear and throw it at the Blood hunter who was screaming the most.
“SHUT THE F*CK UP!” The Bald Man yelled after throwing his spear. “IF ALL OF YOU DO NOT CALM DOWN, I WILL KILL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!”
All the Blood Hunters instantly settle down when they saw their leader killing one of them. They didn’t dare to make another sound, some of them even stopped breathing afraid that the Bald Man might hear them.
“WHAT ARE YOU ALL WAITING FOR? KILL THOSE BASTARDS!” The Bald Man became even more enraged when his hunter didn’t hastily try to kill their attacker.

The Arrows decided to stop attacking when they saw their enemy start to move. All of them quickly retreat, they were satisfied with the result of their night attack. After a while, the Blood Hunters returned to the Bald Man with ashen faces. They failed to capture a single enemy, they were afraid that the Bald Man would lose his temper again and kill one of them.
They were not wrong. the instant the Blood Hunters reported their failure, The Bald Man walked closely to those who had been chosen to be night guard. The Bald Man instantly decapitated them, he didn’t even bat an eye when the blood splashed on his face.
“NO ONE IS GOING TO SLEEP!” Shouted the bald man while pointing his spear at his hunters. “IF I SAW SOMEONE SLEEPING, I WILL GIVE YOU ETERNAL SLEEP!”
Because of this none of the Blood Hunters slept in the entire night, afraid that they would never wake up. While the Blood Hunters were tiring themselves, the Arrows were happily resting and regaining their stamina, some of them even snore while sleeping.
On the next day, the Blood Hunters started to move again toward the tribe they were ordered to destroy. This time they were on guard for any possible attack, the moment someone attack them they would instantly move and kill the bastard that make them so exhausted.
“Should we still attack them?” Berus worriedly asked. “They seemed to be ready for any kind of attack, if we attack them now it is possible that we do not succeed.”
“What are you afraid of?” Gunnar retorted. “They are already tired and in no condition to catch us, while we are still full of energy and can outrun them whenever we want to.”
Even though Berus’ worry was reasonable, a lot of the Arrows became too confident because of the 2 successful attacks. Therefore, a lot of them agreed with Gunnar. Berus became more worried when he saw a lot of Arrows agreeing to Gunnar and becoming overconfident.
He couldn’t help but feel that there was something bad would happen. However, he didn’t say his concern. He knew that they would not listen to him, also they were more experienced than him in this kind of thing, so maybe he was overthinking.
As expected, Gunnar led half of the Arrows to ambush the Blood Hunters again, he was eager to kill the Bald Man that easily caught his arrow. Gunnar’s group recreate what they did yesterday, they waited for the Blood hunter to walk inside their formation again before they would attack.
However, while they were quietly bearing their time for the Blood Hunters to get in the best position of ambush. They felt that something was wrong, but before they could react the rain of arrows was already heading their way.
The Bald Man already noticed the group of people waiting for them, but he didn’t give an order to chase them yet. He wanted to get closer to them because he knew how fast his enemies were, he didn’t want to let them escape this time and if possible, killed them all.
“WE ARE EXPOSED! EVERYONE RETREAT!” One of the Arrows shouted. He didn’t wait for Gunnar’s order, he didn’t know if Gunnar would order a retreat, so he yelled before it was too late.
All of the Arrows instantly abandoned the intention to ambush their enemy and immediately tried to escape. Gunnar was annoyed when someone disregard his leadership and also the chance to kill the Bald Man. However, he didn’t say his complaint right away because he knew how dangerous their situation was.
When the Bald Man saw that their enemies were trying to escape, he decided that he would be the one who would kill them all and chase after them. Although the Arrows escaped right away after being exposed, A lot of them still got hit by the arrows. Thus, making their retreat slower than usual.
Thankfully, they were wearing the Sturdy Rune, making their defense higher than normal. Hence, the arrow didn’t go deeper and injured them seriously. While they were running, they felt an ominous feeling coming from their back.
“I FINALLY SAW YOU!” The Bald Man excitedly yelled. “YOU BETTER RUN FASTER! IF I CAUGHT YOU, I WILL SKIN YOU ALIVE!”

On the fringes of civilization, life is often brief and always violent, but in the Empire's Heartland, implacable hunters seek to rectify their blasphemous existence with Blade and Fire. Embers in the Ash is an epic fantasy adventure story that aims to span quite a few chapters (I hope!). To set expectations, this isn't going to be a LitRPG or power fantasy-style story. I'm aiming for a fairly grounded story set in a fairly high-fantasy world. I hope you enjoy it! For this first month of publication, my aim is to give you, the reader, something to really bite into. I will be releasing a chapter every day at 9:15 AM EST (13:15 GMT), as well as the occasional double chapter (which will always be announced by a post-chapter author blurb). Check in fifteen minutes after the first chapter's release! After this first month of publication, the aim is to go for either a weekly or bi-weekly release schedule, depending on the sort of time I can reliably dedicate to writing. Either way, settle in for the long haul, and welcome to the story!
