《What would you do if you suddenly fell in love?》Procedures

After his question, Sian kept staring at the young lady, waiting for an answer.
The young lady, who was also staring at him, despite being a little surprised, she leaned slightly holding the sides of the dress. "Excuse my manners. As you said yourself, my name is Charlotte Rotherham. It's a pleasure to meet you, Sian De Castilho."
The butler next to her also greeted him, making a brief reverence.
"Aren't you going to introduce this young man who's by your side?" Sian asked.
"You don't have to care about him, he's just my butler." Charlotte said. "May I know who this madam is by your side?"
"As expected of the daughter of a Marquis, your butler is anything but ordinary." Sian continued with a smile emblazoned on his face. "This is Ophilia, my wife."
'For some reason, whenever I call her my wife, I feel a happiness sprouting within me.'
Charlotte made a brief bow to Ophilia and said, "It is a pleasure to meet you."
Clearly nervous, Ophilia replied. “T-The ple-pleasure is all mine!”
"I hope you don't mind this, she doesn't have much contact with nobles." Sian said, still with his hand on Ophilia's shoulder. "Since you're here, it makes things easier. You heard the conversation a while ago, didn't you?"
“Yes.” Charlotte said, gesturing with one hand to the chairs. "How about we sit down before continuing?"
Before going to the chairs, she turned to the receptionist and said. "Margarida, could you bring us some tea?"
“Of course, My Lady.” She bowed and left.
After everyone except the butler sat down, Charlotte said. "I hope you don't blame Margarida for the one before, she was just following my orders."
“Oh! I'm sorry for that too, I lost my temper a bit.” Sian said. "It is understandable to have measures against people who want to use children to make a profit."
“Yes, besides the fact that someone wanting to adopt a child is already strange. It becomes even more suspicious if the person who wants to adopt is well dressed and ends up getting even worse if he is a human wanting to adopt a child of a different race.” Charlotte said with a serious look.
Ignoring Charlotte's distrust towards him, Sian asked. "Does this mean that you have established some measures against this?"
"That's right, whenever someone wants to adopt a child, they will need to go through some procedures, fill in some information and only then will they be able to adopt the child." Charlotte paused briefly before continuing. "That is, if they pass the procedures."

"That sounds very problematic." Sian said with a disgruntled look.
At that moment, the receptionist returned with the tea and served it to those seated.
"It can't be helped, I need to guarantee the safety of the children in my care, after all, children are the future of the nation." She said as she gestured for Sian to taste the tea.
"Well," Sian raised the cup to his mouth and asked, "What do I need to do?"
"It's very simple." She smiled. “You will have to present your documents and fill in some information. After that, this information will be analyzed and you will be asked for an interview. ”
“It is not as complicated as I thought. I just need to show my documents and can we bring her with us?” Sian said.
"Not quite." She took a sip of tea. "If your application for adoption is accepted, you will tell us which child you want to adopt and then you will see their history and decide whether or not you want to proceed with the adoption."
“It’s okay, I'm sure my request will be accepted. Now can I see her history?" Sian said.
"There are still a few more procedures left." Charlotte said.
"Which ones?" Sian said, impatiently.
Charlotte took another sip of tea and continued calmly. “You will be able to meet her here at the orphanage and after a period of rapprochement, if there is empathy between both parties, you can take her out for a few walks or spend a few days at your home. Only after a bond has been created, adoption can be made.”
"I take back what I said before, this is very problematic and time-consuming, can't it be simpler?" Sian said irritably.
Perhaps because he felt Sian's anger, Ophilia held his hand. Looking at her, her eyes seemed very anxious.
'I need to calm down, I know that violence solves everything, but I need to show my good side to her.'
After a long sigh, he drank the tea and said. "I'm sorry again for that, I have a habit of resolving things with violence, but as you can see, I still haven't been able to leave it behind."
Charlotte's lips arched backwards, forming a smile. "Do not worry about it. I know it may be a bit inconvenient, but the procedures take time so that we can be sure that you want to adopt the child without hidden reasons.”

"Well," Sian said, "Do I still need to do anything else?"
“No.” She replied. "But if you answer some of my questions, we can move the procedures forward."
"Go ahead." Sian said promptly.
"Why did you, a Duke of Hosnein, come to our marquisate?" Charlotte said bluntly. "And given your reputation and position, why adopt a child with whom you have no blood relationship?"
"Straight to the point, huh." Sian said carefreely.
“I know that I am being very incisive, I apologize for that. But as Marquis's daughter, I have the duty to investigate why a notorious person like you is here." She said with a serious look.
Upon hearing Charlotte's words, Ophilia cast a look full of doubts for Sian, who just shrugged as he answered. "Nothing as scandalous as you might be thinking."
"Then what could it be?"
"Love!" Sian responded seriously.
"Excuse me, what did you say?" Charlotte tilted her head with a face full of uncertainty, probably doubting what she had just heard.
"The love power!" Sian held Ophilia's hands, who seemed to be embarrassed by the situation she was in. "Now I am a new man. After I found her I decided to change the way I live."
"Is that so?" Still not seeming to believe the situation, Charlotte asked again.
"That's how it is.” Sian replied. “And about adopting the child, she is the daughter of Ophilia, who for some reasons had to be left here at the orphanage, but now we intend to bring her to live with us. I can promise on my honor that we will take good care of her.”
While Charlotte still looked doubtful about the situation, Sian's eyes twitched slightly when he felt a faint flicker of magic being camouflaged, but as it wasn't offensive, he just ignored it.
'As I thought, this butler is not common. To use a telepathic magic and still manage to camouflage it almost perfectly is amazing.'
The doubtful expression slowly disappeared from Charlotte's face.
'I see, this butler can probably tell whether or not someone is lying.'
"Just out of curiosity, how long have you two been together?" Charlotte asked.
"Hmmm..." Sian paused briefly and said. "A day and a half? Or almost that. I know that looking like this seems impossible to believe, but it is the truth. I even thought I was under some magic, but I'm perfectly sane. ”
"I understand you!" Charlotte jumped out of her chair as she stood and responded with bright eyes. “I understand you perfectly! Love is something inexplicable that can occur at any time, even though it is the first time you see the person. But it's sad when we're not requited..."
Sian also stood up and said excitedly. “So you were a companion of love at first sight, I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one who had that experience. Did you tell him clearly how you feel? ”
"Not exactly." She said disheartenedly, looking lightly at the butler. "I'm pretty sure I'm going to be rejected."
Not letting her gaze go unnoticed, Sian said. "I understand, but you don't have to worry."
With a smile, some paper sheets appeared in his hands and he told her telepathically. ‘This can help you.’
She was a little surprised before she asked. 'What is it?'
'A gift.' He moved the paper sheets towards her. 'It's the 'How to win the love of your life' session, it may seem absurd, but it's really helpful.'
'Really? Then I will gladly accept it.' She said cheerfully.
Sian recommended some of the methods he thought would work and then said, making a positive sign. 'Even if this butler looks cold on the outside, he certainly has a weakness, just choose the right method.'
Seeing that Sian had found out who she loved so easily, her cheeks flushed.
To outsiders who didn't know about the tactical discussion Sian and Charlotte were having, it seemed like just two people looking at each other while they smiled and nodded a few times.
Despite this, the butler remained indifferent, but Ophilia seemed to have several question marks on her face.
Realizing the situation belatedly, Charlotte cleared her throat and said. "I'm sorry, I got carried away for the moment."
"The same here, my bad." Sian said, sitting down again.
After sitting down, Charlotte brought up another topic quickly. "Have you heard anything about the extermination of Edrorian's army?"
Sian froze immediately upon hearing that question.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
