《The Book of Hickory》Oh, what a Beautiful Morning -
Advertisement
It wasn't even light out, no sir, it was still just a promise, a promise that today was gonna be a day for writin' home about, that you'd need a whole book to fill in every little bit of goodness this day had in store -
The chicken coop came open, the rooster jumping up in surprise - cock-a-doodle doo!
"I caught ya sleeping in, you lazy ole rooster, you suppose to wake me up." Hickory laughed as the chickens clucked about, hurting to blink the sleeps out of their eyes, leaving them presents behind, still warm, brown eggs fresher then the air he breathed - "I reckon I'd be able to sleep, too, if I had a whole coop of hens tirin' me out, but as it stands - well it just stays standing..."
The chickens clucked sympathetically as Hickory shook his head forlornly, but it was a good longin' like lookin' forward to a special day, he knew it would come sooner or later - and until then?
Fishin' -
Hickory had two fishing poles and a big grin, off for just for a bit of mornin' angling because he'd built a fishing hatchery - he did!
And that meant that ole river had even more fish in it then yesterday, that he'd caught fish yesterday, had no guilt at all keeping every one, eating every one, even the smaller ones cause there were more -

He didn't have points! He'd spent them already on the hatchery! That it was only because he'd gotten that reward, that he'd gotten a free pile of points:
Font 1000 Reward: 1000 Points
That it was only a taste, it had let him get more fish and bigger fish! That he'd gotten those two after that award only to see it didn't stop there...Secret fish? Special fish?
What was next? What could...oh, he couldn't sleep, he had to, had to keep sharp and strong since they had to fight, they had to go get those points! He had to catch a special fish!

It didn't really matter, they were a long way away from being able to build everything if they didn't hurry on up! That Hickory was already waiting at the filling station, pacing around when the rest of them buddies finally showed up!
"Ya'll ain't tired are ya?" Hickory asked.
"Fuck yeah we're tired." Chase said, "We been fighting near non-stop, I had to shit in a corn field yesterday cause you wouldn't let us stop to find a proper place, I thought you said there were just a few more?"
Of course he'd said that before he knew that the Fishing Hatchery was gonna let him upgrade it!
"It's them neighbors I worry about." Hickory said shaking his head - what if they were out? Trying to steal his points, if they didn't hurry?
"Always thinking of others." Gage said, nodding.
"Tell me bout it, now I feel guilty."
Hickory jumped in the back of the truck and off they drove. They had to go far off this time, to Abbot's Ford, he just tapped on the roof - there weren't any monsters until they got far from town, they'd closed all their bubbles. That once the monsters got close to town?
It was like they had a nose for that Font, that if they came close enough they somehow smelled it, ran right to it! Which was good cause it meant they didn't bother folk just minding their business.
That people knew that and waited at the Font, shooting them and Hickory didn't have to worry about it, it wasn't like before, it wasn't a big ole bunch. because that would mean a bubble popped.
That if a bubble popped all his points were wasted? Just marbles, and sure that made Hunter happy, but -
Hickory started to get the tingle about five miles out from town, he tapped once on roof for a right turn, and twice for a left. They'd stopped the first day to help folks they found lost, but Weston had been thinking...
The folk waved, on the side of the road, it was a man, but Hickory saw the rest of his family crouched in a ditch, worried -
Weston slowed the truck.
"Thank God!" The man cried, "I didn't think anybody would stop."
"We can't stay long." Hickory said, "We've got monsters to fight -"
"You're fighting them?"
Hickory nodded, he picked up the box. It had water, food, and a map.
"Ya'll are just a few miles from Red Hills and there ain't no monsters that way if you can walk that far?"
"Can you give us a ride, I've got kids out -"
"Sir," Weston said, rolling down the window, "We'll carry back the kids and ladies on the way back -"
There were sometimes too many people, if they went back and forth all day?
"There is a handgun in the box, enough rounds to protect you, just drop it off at the church so it can be given to another. The instructions are there."
It was sad, of course Hickory wanted to help everybody! Of course if somebody was hurt they drove them to safety, but there were people 10 miles from town, 20!
The first boil they found was off the road, in grazing land. The cows looked at them funny - Weston was admiring them, looking at this map trying to see who owned them. Probably wanting to buy -
"Nice, looks like the scorpions." Hunter said, looking at the pinchers trying to poke out, "Two marbles a head, good way to start the day."
"Ready." Chase said after checking his two revolvers - he stayed in the middle, a hand on Hunter who was linked to Hickory's shoulder, Gage covered Weston who had the rear.
"Ready." Hickory said and touched the bubble -

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14
