Mel clapped his hands together twice with a smile on his lips.
“How wonderful for you two! Looking for your first home together! You came to the right man for the job. I promise I will deliver you the absolute best dream house you could even hope for. Whether it be rural or inside city wal.. err the city limits! Yes sir! Mel Rockcutter will find you the best of the best at the best price!”
“That’s a lot of bests.” Kelly laughed.
“Rockcutter, is that European?” Trish asked.
“Europe? Oh yes. My clan, or family as you say, live in the mountains thereabouts.”
“I knew your accent was special.” Trish replied. “Seems you may have lived here in Canada for some time though. It certainly has lost some of it’s thickness.”
“Or the spell is working better than hoped.” Mel muttered under his breath.
“I’m sorry Mr. Rockcutter I missed that.”
“Oh! Haha, I was just saying we’ve been here for a spell, and it’s working out.” He threw on his best smile, almost reaching his ears.
“How nice.” Trish said. “Kelly and I have lived here most of our lives as well. There is just something we love about living here in Golden. The views are lovely, and the people are the best. Once my father retired from the air force in Comox, he was set on living here. So, Kelly and I would love it if there was something more rural. Where we could maybe have space for a garden.”
“Look at you all small talky.” Kelly nudged Trish, who blushed. “We’d also like something with a yard big enough for a small pasture. Trish here loves horses.”
“I Do.” Trish took over. “Though we won’t be able to have horses right away, I would just love if we had room for two or three.”

Mel cleared his throat cutting in. “Wonderful ladies. I have here papers for you to fill out about your personals as well as another form for must haves and dreams for your home. Once I have a firmer understanding of yourselves and your desires for your first home, I can show you a few options and we can further narrow down your options.” He handed out three forms for the girls to fill out. His smile never faltering once during the whole conversation.
Trish and Kelly each took the forms and scanned them over.
“I will give you two some time to fill out the forms. I will be right over there with my partner. You two lovely lasses take your time. This is an important step after all.” Mel got up, still smiling his painted-on smile. He walked over to the other desk, carrying his chair with him.
Both parties began their own whispering conventions.
“What are you up to Mel. So far you have not mentioned anything about our program. You know… the whole you’re moving to another world thing?”
“Oh relax. I will certainly bring everything to their attention in due time. I am just trying a new tactic.”
“Oh, what tactic would that be? Getting hauled down to H.R. again for breaking the rules?”
“No.” Mel replied a bit louder than he meant to. He looked over to the two girls who were filling out forms and having their own discussion. “I am merely baiting the hook. If I can find them exactly what they are looking for, I bet they won’t care if they live here on Earth or if their house is on an asteroid.”
“Alright. As long as you keep it within company policy.”
Just then a lone man walked into the office. He was dressed in a simple tee-shirt and jeans. He wore large dark sunglasses. He stopped just inside the door taking everything in. It took all of three seconds.

Mel cleared his throat. “Sir my partner here would love to help you out. I am just helping these two ladies here.” He motioned to Wen’s desk. He quickly leaned down to whisper, “Leave the off-world thing till last ok?”
Mel nodded slightly in agreement.
Mel took his chair and moved it back to his desk. The two girls stopped their whispering.
“Ahem. I will just step outside and enjoy myself some fresh air. Please call me when you are ready.” Mel said to the two, then headed for the door after he received two nods.
‘So far so good.’ He thought to himself. ‘If I do this right, I’m sure to get a promotion!’

Through Mist, Veil, and Summer
Anna Lawrence is a quiet girl who'd rather sit and write poetry than bustle about with her peers. After an incident resulting in a panic attack and a trip to the hospital, Anna's foster mother sends her to stay with her aunt and uncle for the summer. Upon arriving in the small mountain town of Glenwood, Anna finds herself caught in the machinations of another world on the other side of the fog: warring witches, animal-headed skypirates, and the boldest, bravest, most interesting girl Anna has ever met. THROUGH MIST, VEIL, AND SUMMER is my homage to Studio Ghibli films. It's a fantasy romance with a dash of adventure and a sprinkling of self-contemplation. It's a story that moves a little slower, a little quieter. It is my fourth novel, written between October 1, 2017 and January 6, 2019.
