《Grand Defender》Chapter 15

Two days had passed since I found Ena, and she seemed incredibly well now. Probably thanks to her stats.
Apparently, the System also stole her name to give her a new one, so she didn’t really care about what I called her.
“Um, uh, I wanted to apologize. About how I acted a bit pissy a few days ago, I was tired and irritated”, She said, lowering her head.
“No, no. I get it, there’s no need to apologize. Scurvy does that to people”, I replied.
“Anyways, how did you know it was scurvy?”, Ena asked, intrigued.
“Well, first of all, a friend of mine got it in the past, and you looked as pale and were as pissy as him. Secondly, it’s hard to keep a varied diet when you get thrown into the wilderness out of nowhere”. I explained. “Fruit is just as important as meat, if not more”.
“I know, I know, but every fruit tree here is guarded by monkeys!” She replied.
“What did I tell you about the monkeys?” I responded.
“... To just scare them away”, Ena reiterated my words.
“And that’s what we are going to do right now, stand up”, I ‘suggested’.
And so, monkey scaring we went.
“Are you sure this is a good idea? The bastards might throw shit at me!”, Ena asked worriedly.
“Yeah, whatever. Run up to the tree up ahead, that’s enough for them to get scared and flee”, I said, basically batting her argument away. “Just make sure to dodge if they throw something at you”
Ena rushed towards the trees, expecting the monkeys to take off. Instead, the white faced capuchins stood their ground and silently stared at her, staying still. After about ten seconds, all the monkeys present started screaming in unison, which made Ena visibly flinch.

After the small monkeys stopped, a deeper and more profound scream came into play. The guttural scream, more like a howl, had started to multiply, with now multiple howls in various directions.
Ena immediately sprinted towards me, dark and small monkeys revealing themselves. I couldn’t help but laugh at what just happened, earning me a glare from Ena.
“It’s not funny! I could’ve had a heart attack!”, she exclaimed angrily.
“Sorry…”, not really meaning it, I had to say it.
“Jeez, how are you not scared? What’s your level?” Ena asked, now calmed down.
“Stats, and make the screen visible for everyone”, I asked the System.

“45?!”, she really was surprised. “And why are three of your Classes related to rocks”
“Hey! Don’t say it like that! Rocks are cool, you know?”, I said, defending my choices. “And doesn’t [Geomancer] sound cool? I almost tore off my leg with it by accident, it made for a good lesson”.
“What the actual fuck? How do you just almost ‘accidentally tear it off’?”, she asked, now even more confused.
“Anyways, what level are you? Do you also have the [Chosen by Crab] perk?”, I asked.
“Uhh, around 35. And yeah, I do have it. What does it do?”, Ena dubiously responded.

“I have no clue, really. I’ll try something real quick”, she looked at me with suspicion at these words. “Uhh, mhm. [Summoned by Crab]”.
As the last word left my mouth, a dim light shone on the floor, summoning a crab.
How the turntables.

Demon Hunters
Far in the future, the last two viable cities in the western hemisphere – Technoburbia and New Baravia – struggle for control over a vast and largely desolate land. Officially they are at war. In practice, the war has been a stalemate for a generation, the disputed frontier between the two city-states never moving. In the city of New Baravia itself, a vast circular concrete wall keeps its inhabitants in, and its refugees out. For its citizens, life is monotonous and unequal, with enormous wealth in the hands of nobles, criminal gangs, and entertainment bosses. It is the last of these that control the hit entertainment show, “Demon Hunters”. A chance, perhaps, for the ordinary man or woman to rise up, and change their fate... This LitRPG novella is based around a futuristic battle-royale situation, partly set in VR, and partly in a post-apocalyptic city. The story features combat and action, some strong language, and lots of great characters that will stick with you! [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
