《Dark Slate》Chapter 4: Learning Magic

As i was making my way to Leon's study i passed his room, he and mother where discussing something. They weren't yelling or arguing anymore. They were talking about what to do with me. so i decided to listen in on their conversation.
"I just want to protect the boy. he will be a liability in our family's future conflict. You know why we had to move to this remote village. So before we reunite with the rest of our family we need to grow strong children to prepare for what's to come. We will be summoned to my fathers mansion back in the capital of Iradale soon, so there's no room for mistakes. And with his condition it will only hinder our progress." he said no longer angry but calmly
"But i don't want to leave him." she said with sadness in her voice.
"I know but due to his hearing loss, he may be mistreated by the rest of our family. They'll look down on him. And me, for failing such a simple task." he continued. "So we need to have an offspring that's capable."
"Or do you just want to prove to your father that you accomplished something by providing him with a worthy heir." she said coldly
" . . . " he didn't respond.
"Wait. No. I didn't mean it like that. It's just. . . you know." she paused "i don't want to leave my children." " Cant he stay, just while we live in this village" she said desperately.
"Yeah all right. But remember it will only hurt more later on." he said. After a while he spoke again."Did you put Arata to sleep" he asked.
"He went to Hanna's room. so he's probably sleeping there." she answered.
"Really? since when do the two of them get so close?" he asked puzzled.
They continued having small talk. Then i continued on my way.
hmm. based on what i just heard. Leons father. My grandfather. is someone important, and due to an incident. He disbanded and isolated his family in order to recuperate from this problem.
I continued down the hall to the study. Passing through the small hallway balcony, where i saw the sunset, i opened the door into a rounded room where there was a long window at the back and a desk in front. the walls where covered in bookshelf's but a lot of them were empty. Though there was some books.
I then looked through the books. Ever since coming to this world i've been able to understand the language, since it's the same as my old one, and the same with its writing.
I found a book titled Magic Records. it didn't have an author, but instead a symbol of four crowns parallel to each other, one on top, the other in the bottom, and a the other two on the the sides. It looked sort of like a four leaf clover. The book is probably from a library in the capital. I opened the book to look at its contents.
In it was written how to manipulate mana, and shape it in to a desired effect. Referring to the four main elemental attributes fire, water, earth, and wind.

A persons affinity can be discovered by surrounding yourself with the four elements. Then by manipulating the mana around yourself, whichever element reacts reacts to your mana, that is your affinity. some people can have two or more attributes . Although it is rare, there has been records of people being able to manipulate all four.
As for healing magic anyone can learn it. Some devote their entire lives to healing, and with the highest level of healing magic you can cure any illness, disease, and even regrow libs.
There was also recordings of individuals who can wield unique magic like lightning, light, gravity, barrier, curse, ice and many more types of magic. some were born with these gifts and others found ways to learn them, though it is unclear how. Because of how very little people actually accomplished it.
A persons mana capacity can grow the earlier you practice magic, but at a certain point of age it stops growing. The normal age where kids are taught two manipulate mana is around 7 or 8, some earlier and others later. This is because to learn magic it takes patience to meditate . Most kids don't have enough self control to take their time learning it. A person mana pool stops increasing around 11 years of age. And that's when most parents send their kids to magic schools.
An average kid would take 3 to 4 years to increase their mana pool as much as possible. it can increase by exhausting every last bit of mana, or by using and refining spells.
If a person started manipulating mana at 7 years old and another one at 8, by the time they reach their limit. The person that started earlier would have a greater amount. A noticeable amount more, but not on a wide scale. And if two people that learn to manipulate mana at the age of 7. By the time they're 11, they'll have about the same amount of mana in the end.
As for me, this body is almost two years old. So if i start now. I could have double the amount of mana than that of a regular person. No. The earlier the better. Since i still have a young body i could could have more than triple the amount.
'well no time to waste' i thought
So before i learn what my elemental affinity is. I need to learn how to draw out my mana from within myself. In this world there is mana everywhere even in the atmosphere. Because of this if you take a moment to meditate, and look deep within yourself you should feel the flow of the mana inside of you. And then draw it out.
'Easier said than done'
So i sat down, crossed my legs, straightened my back, took in deep and slow breaths as i attempted to cleared my mind.
' . . . '
after a while i felt something
'I feel something. And now. DRAW IT OUT.'
"ahhh" i yelled aloud.
I failed. I tried again and failed again over and over.
Maybe i should get some rest and try tomorrow in the morning. Because it has been a long day and i've had a lot to think about. Since the doctors visit, my talk with Hanna, to the conversation of Leon and Emma. Most importantly about Emma, my mother, she made me feel loved after a long time of feeling alone. Which is something i'm grateful to her about, maybe i should start putting more effort into being a better son for her sake. I'll reveal to her that i'm not deaf sometime soon, i just need to think of an excuse.

It is around midnight right now. I decided to go to bed. I put the book back on the shelf and headed to my room, and i quickly fell asleep.
The next morning i woke up determined to succeed. I sat on my bed crossed my feet and started the meditation. I feel way more relaxed right now than last night. after some minutes of inhaling and exhaling slowly my body felt like it was sideways, but relaxed. i held on to the feeling. Then i felt a flow of pressure inside my body. through force i expelled that pressure.
I then opened my eyes and saw a white aura had engulfed me. It almost looked like mist, then i felt heavy and fell backwards laying back on my bed.
What happened? am i out of mana? It did say on the book that using large amounts of mana until depletion can have a strain on your body.
As i was laying back recovering. My mother walked in, and happily marched towards me. She then carried me and started walking out the room.
"it's time for breakfast." she said with a smile on her face.
Its difficult to think that she's this happy after what happened yesterday. She sat me down on the table and served my plate. Hanna gave me a smile, and Leon didn't even look at me. We started eating breakfast. By the time we finished Leon walked out the back door, just like every other morning.
After a few days of constantly exhausting my mana reserves and waiting for them to fill. I had a enough mana for me to manipulate at will. I surrounded my body in mana through the outside like a barrier and kept it tight to my skin. then i tried moving it to individual body parts, but using it this way only acts as a shield. If i want to increase my power i needed to move the mana through the inside of my body. which is still a mystery to me. The book said that to do this, instead of drawing the mana out, i needed to keep it in and control it through the inside.
One night after everyone was asleep i went back to the study and brought with me a candle, some small stones, and and cup with water.
I placed the candle in front of me, the stones to my left, and the water to my right. Like i was in the middle of a triangle.
I surrounded the small area with my mana. And then the fire in the candle reacted to it by growing in size. and then a gust of wind flowed around me. And that was it, fire and air were my elemental attributes. i threw the stones back outside, put the cup on the desk, and blew out the flame.
Then i raised my hand, and remembering the feeling of how the fire reacted to my mana. I recreated it with my mana alone. After some attempts a ball of fire floated in my hand illuminating the whole room. Then i added more mana to it making the flame hotter and brighter.
I stopped there because if i continued i would've ran out of mana. I could've kept going putting up a mana barrier around my skin to protect me from the heat, But i needed to test out my other affinity.
The same with fire i did with air recreating the feeling of wind blowing against me, turning my mana into wind. I let out a small gust of wind that flew around the room. then i added more power behind it and small objects started moving and falling over. then my reserves gave out. Turning my mana into fire and air seemed to have made me run out faster. After that i went to my room for the night.
The next day after eating breakfast i went outside to the front yard, because Leon was in the backyard.
I made a fire ball in my hand and launched it. I could choose the size of a spell and force of the launch. The fire ball went flying in the air until it dispersed.
I did the same with my second attribute, with mana i compacted the air into a wind bullet at the tip of my finger. It was a small sphere only visible due to a thin layer of mana outlining it. I launched it into a cup i had set up knocking it back.
With charcoal i drew targets in the stone wall. I used them to practice aiming with my fire ball and wind bullet.
Every day i trained my magic. time flew by fast, that i almost didn't feel it. It had been months since i started training. The reason i realized this, was because my mother was about to give birth.
Leon called a nurse to attend her at all times and help her deliver.
Then the day came when she gave birth. It was a girl. Leon looked at the baby disapprovingly. and didn't even help to name it. So mother have her the name of Mia Arumani. She had the exact same features as me. With black hair and dark grey eyes, she was like a female version of me.
And again i heard Leon cursing to himself saying he had failed to produce an adequate heir.
why don't they just use the new born or Hanna? Does this world look down on woman? I hope not.

The Head That Wears The Crown
It's a tale as old as time. Boy goes to funeral. Boy gets sucked into a different world. Boy has to lead a settlement. Boy has to lead a settlement? Boy has to lead a settlement. This is a story about that settlement, and some other stuff. Maybe. Disclaimer: Not sure if it qualifies enough for a gore tag. There is a description of someone's death somewhere in this, but I don't think it is descriptive enough to justify a gore tag. Disclaimer part deux: I initially started writing this as background for another story but got so into it I just ended fleshing it out a bit. Disclaimer part tres: People love reading disclaimers don't they? It's why I've included so many. They're just for you. Disclaimer part four: I know, this is getting egregious. You're starting to find it less funny. Just wait till the twentieth disclaimer, it will start being funny again. Disclaimer part five: I'm kidding, this is the last one. I don't promise I'll read every comment or message, but I certainly welcome your feedback. Disclaimer part six: I lied, it wasn't the last one. I wrote this story without breaking it down into chapters. It just goes, that means that the chapter ends when it ends, not when there is a convenient break in the story. That means that it's very annoying for you as a reader since chapters can end mid sentence. Hah! Sucker! Disclaimer part seven: Get ready for slow updates. Who knows when this will continue. Toss it on read later and come back in fifty years. Disclaimer part eight: Cover Photo by Arthur Ogleznev on Unsplash
