《Re: Apocalypse Games (GAMELit)》019 - Mobs

Alan turned around and saw how Luis had already fallen to the ground. The Mexican man was screaming as people tried to grab his back, to the point where they were kicking him to the ground.
In real life, incidents of such brutality happened rarely, but in an apocalypse situation like this, not only because fear takes over them, but it was also part of the game mechanic that was placed to hinder the player's success.
The mob of people ferociously charged at them, much like baited ferrets. At this moment, there was a real chance that the masses would kill the poor Mexican and hurt anyone trying to help him.
"Help him!!" said Laura, trying to convince Alan and Sam to turn back.
The bulky guy, Sam, didn't even blink and kept running across the street.
Alan made a quick calculation of risk. The Mexican guy was now surrounded by 10 mobs, and more coming each second. It was definitely risky to turn back. Knowing it's a lousy choice, Alan said.
"No, It's too risky. Leave him!"
The girl gave him a disappointed glance before she decided to go back and help the screaming man by herself.
"Stop!!.."
Laura tried to help Luis but got elbowed by one of the mobs instead, causing her to lose her balance and fall to the ground. At this rate, if things continue as they were, the girl would meet the same ends.
The truth was, there was an inevitable pain in Alan's chest as he wanted to help them, but he shouldn't. If he insisted on helping them, it would do nothing but endanger his chance of success.
Alan was ready to leave when he caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eyes. In a split second, he made the decision to jump back into the mobs.

[Impact: Inflicts 15 Damage]
[Impact: Inflicts 17 Damage. Target Knocked Out…]
He instantly managed to get the one that attacked the girl. He then swiftly helped her get up.
Laura smiled and said, "I know you are a good person." On the other hand, Alan chose to ignore her as another mob dashed toward him. He was able to quickly block the attack and grabbed the assaulter's arm and smashed him to the ground.
[Impact: Inflicts 10 Damage]
Before her statement ended, Alan glanced at her and said, "No, I am not… not really," and then swiftly kicked the target again.
[Impact: Inflicts 18 Damage. Target knocked out…]
Because of this action, eight mobs charged at him, He tried to tackle them, but one managed to hit him from the back.
[Impact: Received 5 Damage]
Alan, however, keeps his composure as finally, a figure appears behind them. A brown-skinned man with a beard immediately knocked two mobs' heads together, instantly causing both to be unconscious.
The figure was none other than the Indian monk.
"Nims, you are late!"
"No, I think I came just in time," Nim said while fiercely hitting and kicking the mobs around with a battle cry
"Fight Me!"
By witnessing the crazy monk join the fray, Alan's confidence reached its peak to lend a helping hand.
"Get him out!" Alan shouted to Laura while he started to fight the incoming mobs together with the eccentric monk.
Bamm!! Bamm!!
Laura quickly pulled the half-conscious Luis across the street, followed by Alan and Nims protecting her from behind.
It wasn't clear whether it was because of the strength they displayed to the mobs or part of the game mechanic itself, but the mobs gradually stopped following them, and they were able to make it out safely.

Laura laid the Mexican on a building wall. He was injured and half unconscious. Laura swiftly ministers him with the [Gauze Bandage].
The bandage only needed to cover the bruises, and the game mechanic started to restore Luis's HP.
Not taking any chances, the girl gave the second bandage to Luis. The healing can't be stacked; hence she waited 90 seconds before giving Luis the second one and healed a total of 60 HP. Soon after, the Mexican man started feeling healthy, stood up, and turned chatty once again.
"Thank you for saving my ass, bro... Sis.." He said with a broad grin on his face. He peeked at Nims, startled for a second, and unconsciously said, "And you too… scary... bro."
"Ok, let's not waste any time. We gotta get moving. Let's go." Alan said.
They were about to move now when Laura suddenly realized something and asked, "Where is Sam?"
Luis, who was still annoyed by the fact Sam left him, said, "Who cares about him... That piece of shit already got what he came for, so he left us."
Realizing there was no point in searching for the man who had run away, the group decided to leave the place.
However, shortly after, a shrieking scream was heard.
"Arrrghhh!!"
"It's Sam!"
The group quickly headed toward the sound. It was an alleyway just around the corner, and what they saw left them surprised.
The bulky man, Sam, was already lying on the ground, bleeding heavily on his chest The one who attacked him was a man in a black jumper with a knife in his hand still dripping with blood. Two other men behind him were wearing red tracksuits, and all were holding weapons in their hands.
It was apparent from their appearances that all three of them were also players.
A second later, the group saw Sam's breath get much shorter, and stopped.
Alan calmly walked toward the bleeding body checked his pulse and said
"He's dead"

The Legion of Nothing
Nick Klein is your average high school geek--if you can still count as average when your grandfather is a retired superhero, and you've been trained in the martial arts by his friend, a mysterious, immortal mercenary. After his grandfather dies, Nick inherits the last version of the Rocket suit, powered armor that allows him to shrug off bullets, smash through walls, and manipulate sound. Along with it comes the base of his grandfather's superhero team including the team's jet and trophies from forty years of fighting criminals and aliens. Together, Nick and his friends, descendants of his grandfather's teammates, attempt to bring back a superhero team that was originally formed during World War 2. Along the way they'll face the normal problems of high school (bullies, homework, and dating), and the less normal problems like supervillians and mysteries leftover from their grandparents' past. As a story, it uses the conventions of all eras of comics from the 1940s on, ranging from serious to silly. If you're hoping for a grim and gritty story, this isn't it. The Legion of Nothing first debuted on my website legionofnothing.com in 2007. In that period it's updated more than 900 times, is still running, and has had millions of pageviews. The first two years have been released as an ebook, receiving good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. I hope you'll enjoy it, and that you'll review it and comment.
