《When We Were Young [H.S.]》4. Paradise

Taking a bite from the green apple in her hand, Wednesday turned the page of the book she was reading, squinting her brows as the hot sun beamed down onto her. The yacht rocked gently with the movement of the waves, the sound of the ocean the only thing she could hear from her position lying on the front deck. The quiet was bliss and the view of the Amalfi coast was even better; houses of all shapes, sizes and colours lined the rocky hillside as fresh, blooming flowers fell around them. It was one of the most picturesque places she'd ever been.
Muffled voices from the lower deck radiated up to her, but she was content in her own world, away from any and all talk of work. She made it through 4 more chapters in utter peace before turning from her back to her front, applying more sunscreen and breathing in the warm, salty sea breeze. There was nothing better.
Footsteps travelled up the stairs behind her and she turned to see Harry, stood at the top step shirtless in his short, yellow swimming trunks and backwards baseball cap.
"Having fun up here?" he asked with a laugh, knowing her penchant for alone time.
"I've never been so relaxed in my life" she replied truthfully, scanning his appearance quickly before closing her eyes as she moved her face to the direction of the sun.
"Well, lunch will be ready in about an hour. Before that though, we're taking the jet skis out. Wanna join?"
He didn't need to ask twice—she was already up and following him down the stairs, re-joining the group as they watched the jet skis be released from the back, strapping on their life vests.
Within ten minutes, they were lining up to get on the 3 jet skis available. After waiting for her turn, she looked up to see Jeffrey occupying one, Mitch on another and Harry on the last one.
"Oh" she said, partly annoyed that she hadn't got first dibs on one of them.
"Get on the back of mine" Harry waved her over, patting the seat behind him.
She looked to the seat and back to him, her eyes dropping to his torso for a second before she shook her head.
"Oh, no, it's fine. I'll...I'll just wait till you're done" she replied hastily, ready to sit down on the sofa behind her.
"Wednesday, stop being daft and get on" Harry said, more firmly this time as he pushed on his black Ray-Bans.
"Come on Wednesday, get on. Harry doesn't smell that bad" Mitch jeered, starting up his engine before Harry could say anything, Jeffrey's laughter sounding out between them.
"Alright" she smiled slightly, walking over to the edge of the boat as the jet ski lined up, taking a big step and throwing her leg over as she sat down.
Harry turned on the engine as Wednesday pushed her sunglasses up her nose, slowly starting to pull away from the boat.
"Hang on" Harry instructed her and with a glance down, she laced her arms through his and around his lifejacket, her hands clasping together.
With that, Harry set off, slowly getting away from the boat before all at once hitting the accelerator. Wednesday felt her grip tighten around his middle as the waves propelled them up and forward, drenching them in the process.
They laughed as their speed increased, following the path set by Mitch and Jeffrey, occasionally shouting out whoops the faster they went. After ten minutes of driving around, Harry stopped far away from the boat and the others, the jet ski stationary on the water as he cleaned his sunglasses. Wednesday, a mild adrenaline junkie, took her chance.

"Can I drive?" she asked, wringing out her long, wet hair as Harry turned to her, a look of fear in his eyes.
"I know how crazy you get on these..." he stated, wiping the ocean water from his face.
"Pleaaaaase" Wednesday whined, smirking when he rolled his eyes and awkwardly manoeuvred himself around her, now positioning himself on the back seat. It always worked.
"Alright, I'm letting you drive, but just don't go too fa-"
She turned the accelerator handle quickly, sending them speeding off before he could finish his sentence. She felt his grip around her waist tightening the faster she went, laughing as he held on for dear life and muttered expletives under his breath.
Catching up to the others, she smirked at Jeffrey, ignoring Harry's pleas behind her to stop.
"Wanna race? Loser has to buy dinner tonight" she bargained, confident in her abilities.
"You're on. First one to pass the boat" he replied, smiling back at her as they moved apart to be in line with each other.
"I'm gonna die" Harry mumbled behind her and she smirked, feeling him rest his forehead on her back as if he was too scared to look forward.
"Right, are you ready" Mitch shouted from the side. "In 3, 2, 1, GO!"
Wednesday pulled back on the accelerator hard, sending them shooting forward. From the corner of her eye, she could see Jeffrey slightly further ahead and she ramped up the speed even more, the water choppy from the wake of his jet ski. They bounced along, the waves making them jump up and down constantly. Harry's arms were wrapped around her so tight now, her breathing was almost restricted, but her competitive nature meant she was determined to finish first. She watched as the speed crept up to 70mph, her hands aching from holding on so tight, not even slowing when she noticed the choppy wave ahead.
"Wednesday, no, no NO" Harry called from behind her, but she didn't listen.
Hitting the wave at full speed, they were sent gliding through air, landing with a harsh jolt that made both of them groan before continuing forward and passing the boat, turning to see Jeffrey a second behind them.
"I might throw up" Harry complained as they came to a stop, clutching his head as Wednesday chuckled to herself.
"And THAT is how you win a race" she replied, holding her hands up in celebration.
At dinner later that night, she polished off her complimentary 3 courses with a round of cocktails, her victory making it taste just that bit better.
"What's going on with your hair this week?" Mitch asked Harry, staring at his new style curiously once their small group had all settled down at another bar a few hours later, relaxing on the outside sofas in dim lighting.
"What about it?" Harry replied, reaching his hand up to pat his hair in reassurance.
Usually, Harry's hair was a bit longer and overflowing, his unkept waves pushed backwards. On this trip however, it was shorter, straighter and flopped down onto his forehead, a new look for him.
"It's just very different, that's all" Mitch laughed, holding his hands up innocently.
"I think it looks good" Wednesday piped from opposite them, sipping her Aperol spritz.
Harry smiled his appreciation at her. "Thank you Wednesday, for the support. See Mitchell, Wednesday has taste unlike you."
The small group of them carried on like that, joking and laughing whilst Jeffrey casually discussed business with Kid and Tyler.
"So" Mitch began quietly, turning to Jeffrey. "When does Daisy start?"

Wednesday, who had been heavily invested in finishing her drink, stopped with the straw still in her mouth, looking up.
"Two weeks' time officially. She's coming in next week to meet everyone though" Jeffrey replied.
So, they had decided to hire her. Wednesday felt a pair of eyes on her as she processed it but chose to ignore them and look back down to her glass again.
An hour later, they'd all walked back to their villa, high in spirits from the night.
They'd all decided on sitting around and having one final nightcap, though Wednesday, who'd been yawning the whole way back, knew she didn't need a drink to send her to sleep—she was already halfway there.
"I'm just gonna go to bed guys, I'm knackered. See you tomorrow" she yawned, blowing them all a kiss before turning and walking away down the corridor.
Before she could even get to her room, the thuds of Harry's quick footsteps had caught up to her.
"Wednesday" he said, turning her around by her arm to face him.
She pinched her eyebrows together as she sleepily looked at him. "Yeah?"
"Sorry that I forgot to mention that we'd hired Daisy before. There was just so much going on these past few weeks I forgot and-"
"Harry, it's fine" she yawned, unsure why he was so concerned over her reaction to it. "It'll be nice to have another woman on the team."
"Oh, yeah" he replied, almost shocked at her response. "Yeah, it will be. Sorry again for not saying."
"Harry" Wednesday replied softly but to the point, grabbing both of his arms. "It's fine. I promise."
As she let out another yawn, she unlocked the door.
"Now if you don't mind, I'm off to go collapse onto my bed" she smiled sleepily at him, bidding her goodbye before closing the door and doing exactly that.
The rest of their week in Italy was bliss; Wednesday finished her book, along with two others and ate to her hearts content, whilst gaining a sun kissed tan in the process. She'd swam in the ocean every morning, loving the serenity of her alone time in the water—she'd always been a water baby. Coming back, she felt refreshed and ready for the upcoming months that were sure to be hectic at the least.
Stepping foot into the studio two days after returning, she waved hello to the regular faces sat down, chucking her stuff down onto the floor as she leant against the wall, looking into the recording area through the window and seeing Mitch record some last minute instrumentals, with Sarah sat beside him.
After 15 minutes, a few more people walked into the room and she looked over to see Harry, Jeffrey and a girl beside them, smiling widely.
"Everyone, this is Daisy. She's the new secondary pianist, as well as backup vocals. She'll be officially starting next week during rehearsals, but she's just come in today to meet everyone and get a feel for the job and vibe" Jeffrey announced, smiling down to her.
Kid and Tyler and another guy walked forward, introducing themselves and welcoming her into the team. Adam, who'd been sat on the sofa, also got up to say hello, asking a few questions.
Wednesday, still leant against the wall, let her eyes analyse her appearance. She had a blunt cut long bob that was dyed powdery blue and her makeup was light, but glowing. She was a only a few inches shorter than herself, but was slim and petite. She wore a dotted smock dress and doc martens, with a canvas tote bag thrown over her shoulder. Black tattoos covered her left arm and her nails were short but painted the same blue as her hair.
"This is Wednesday, our drummer" Jeffrey announced, pointing to Wednesday as she shook herself out of her daydream.
Straightening up, she shot her a smile. "Hi, nice to meet you."
Daisy mirrored her smile, nodding at her before turning to see Mitch and Sarah entering the room, the last to be introduced.
As the group got into a casual conversation, asking Daisy questions and inquiring about her life and work, Wednesday took the opportunity to enter the recording room herself, knowing what drum parts needed to be fine-tuned and rerecorded.
"Kid, am I alright to get my bits done?" Wednesday asked through the mic, putting on the heavy headphones and positioning herself behind the drums, adjusting them accordingly.
"Yep, I'm recording now." He reiterated the parts from which songs needed to be done and she nodded, hearing the songs start in her ear as she connected the drumsticks with the skins.
After half an hour, they got what they needed, and she exited back into the mixing area, grabbing her water bottle.
"Efficient as always Wednesday" Kid crooned from his seat, sending her a smirk.
"Just trying to make your life easier. I know it's hard dealing with these delinquents" she dryly responded, laughing as a chorus of complaints came from the rest of them.
"You were really good" Daisy said from where she now sat on the sofa, Sarah and Mitch on either side of her.
"Thanks" she breathed out with a smile, before looking to Harry who was hovering by the door.
"If I'm done for today, I'm gonna head off if that's alright" she asked, picking up her bag.
"Uh, yeah, that's fine. Have you got plans or something?" he asked curiously.
"Nope. I do have a pile of washing that needs doing however, so..." she replied, looking back up to him.
"Right, well I'll see you later then" he nodded, and she weaved around him, saying her goodbyes to the rest of the team.
Walking out into the sunny September weather, she decided to walk home. It was only 30 minutes away and so she stuck her earphones in, setting off.
Half an hour later, she'd let herself into the house. Kicking off her converse, she walked into the kitchen and put a load of clothes on a gentle wash, before collapsing down onto her sofa. Pulling her phone out from her back pocket, she opened up Instagram.
With her tongue caught between her lips, she typed Daisy's name into the search bar, seeing her profile pop up before clicking on it. She scrolled her effortlessly cool feed, taking time to look at the various photos before locking her phone and sighing.
She really needed to stop being such a bitch sometimes. It was a major character flaw of hers, but sometimes she couldn't help it. It was just part of her personality to appear a bit cold. She wasn't a fan of change, and when it did happen, her brain responded with its favourite coping mechanism; hostility and distance. Damn her Aries energy.
Looking at the ceiling, she opened up her phone once again, determined to push past her own issues. Staring at Daisy's profile, her finger however over the screen until she made her decision, hitting the follow button. See—she could be mature and open, like everyone else.
With that, she put her phone onto the coffee table, turning the TV on and pulling up Netflix, ready to find another show to binge watch as she settled into the sofa with a content smile.
Sometime later, her phone buzzed with two new notifications.
the first one read.
She smiled, liking the feeling of being an adult. The second notification however, made her mood sour instantly.
Can we talk?
She knew she should have blocked her ex when she had the chance

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14

Finding new friends along a path riddled with tragedy, Essairyn must learn who to trust as deceit and betrayal lie behind kindly faces.
