《A Special Someone for Christmas》Part 23: Second chances

Jungkook's POV
We have a grand time at breakfast. Tae and I have already made several decisions. It is all very big and messy in some ways. Kind of like a rough draft. But we have a plan. We will stay in LA for a while, and I will work from there. Tae has already texted his parents and they will help us find housing. Of course, Tae's grandmother is planning a big celebration for us once we arrive. Tae tried to talk her out of it, and I could only laugh knowing it was a lost cause. Grandma will not be told what to do. Tae's family is superb, and I am grateful for how they have embraced me, and I am looking forward to Los Angles, California, with my boyfriend.
Before we can rise to leave, two unexpected guests join us at our table. It is Troy and Taylor. Taylor is still quite bruised around his left eye and cheek. He doesn't give us eye contact. Troy starts to talk and places his phone on the center of the table. I see he has his Google translator app open.
"Can I please have a minute of your time?" I bite my lip as I listen to the English translation to Korean. Tae is surprised but his face softens, and he nods as I stay still and on my guard. Troy then nudges Taylor who turns towards Tae. He'd better choose his words carefully or he'll have more than one bruise.
"Uh, I'm very sorry. I was inappropriate, gross, and drunk. Please forgive me. He briefly looks over to Tae and not to me. Tae softly smiles and thanks him for his apology. Taylor then rises and looks like an idiot as he bows overs and over again. Americans! Is all I can think. He then scurries away like a scared little mouse. I now guess it's Troy's turn.
He does not appear scared but far more confident. This should be interesting, I think.
"I want to express how very sorry and terribly ashamed I am for my behavior." He looks at Tae and then me. My expression is flat and does not read as friendly, but quite the opposite.
"I misread the situation. Also, it was terribly inappropriate for a representative of this hotel to make an advance towards a guest such as yourself. On top of that it was downright criminal of me to use the chip in your keycard to trace your whereabouts. I would have fired anyone on the spot had that occurred."

What? Troy is management. I certainly would not have known given his behavior. But outside of that he appears good at his job. I look over to Tae and I can see he is listening. What he did was out of bounds, but I question if he needs to be punished by losing his employment. I need to hear more first.
"Troy, I misled you about Jungkook. That was wrong." Tae shares. "Why should we not report your behavior to the owner? You tracking us was despicable. This is America and we have rights. That was surveillance of our personal selves, and it was a violation."
Wow, Tae is really letting this guy have it.
"Mr. Kim, I get why you did what you did. Not t-telling Mr. Jeon I...uh... w-was interested." For the first time I see a crack in his outer polished exterior as his eyes drop and he stammers. I get how embarrassing it must be for him to have made advances on me and to be rejected. And a violent rejection it was.
"I love this hotel and I hope to make my career here. I was foolish and stupid." He then shakes his head in disgust and turns to me. "My boyfriend broke-up with me a week ago and I was devastated. He left me for someone else and I was reactive and destructive. He said I'm boring and not willing to take risks." Tae immediately looks over to me with a playful smile. "I took a big risk and look at what happened. You did me a big favor by rejecting me Mr. Jeon. I now understand what I did not. You both are newly in love, and it is remarkable. When you returned from your activities on Christmas Eve, I could tell by the way you looked at each other. Of course, you didn't want me to tell Mr. Jeon I had an interest," Troy says as he looks over to Tae and then turns towards me. "I pray to one day be as fortunate as you are Mr. Jeon, and to have someone fighting to be with me as Mr. Kim was." I then see a soft realness in him. He is, I believe, sincere.
"Again, I love my job at this hotel, and I hope to make my career here. I beg you to please not tell the owner, my uncle, what I did." He looks down at his hands that are folded on the table.

"What? The owner is your uncle?" Tae questions as his mouth falls open and I can see he is just as astonished as I am.
"Yeah, he's tough on me and expects me to work hard. I'm not guaranteed employment or advancement because I'm family. I have to work hard and compete like everyone else. What I did was dishonorable, and he will not tolerate it and likely fire my ass on the spot. So, I'm asking for a chance to learn from this mistake and become a better man." He lowers his head and Tae begins to speak.
"Troy, thank you for being honest. I believe in second chances. I also know what it is like to give into your lower self, regret it later and have to face the harsh consequences. I have a part in this too and for that I am sorry I allowed it to get out of control. If you can forgive me, I can most certainly forgive you." Troy nods his head as a smile slowly spreads across his face.
I lean forward and use my phone to translate my Korean into English.
"Troy, what you did was despicable and highly unprofessional. Taylor deserved what he got." Troy nods in agreement. "However, I know what it is like to make costly mistakes that ruin your reputation. I too believe in second chances. The nature of risk is that there are consequences attached to it. Next time weigh your risk better. Know your consequences first and then ask yourself if it is worth it." I then chuckle as Tae looks over at me and I see his beautiful smile start to expand. "Good luck to you Troy and keep working hard. We have all done stupid things, but they do not have to ruin our lives."
He stands, smiles softly, bows once and leaves. He then turns around again.
"If there is anything that I can do for you, I would be honored."
When we return to our suite, I make several calls. First, I speak with Mr. Michaels in LA and reschedule our appointment. I briefly tell him of my desire to restructure our plan and I would like to consider investing and working together. The phone line goes dead as I fear he has hung up on me. After a brief pause in a stunned voice he simply says, "why." I tell him because he cares about his company and his employees, and I have a sincere desire to help. The thought of helping warms my inner core.
Next, I call Tami with shaky hands. Tae sits with me and supports me through the call. Like Mr. Michaels, she is shocked. She freely talks and I start to relax as Tae gently rubs my back. We have a lovely conversation. I tell her that I want to restructure her time for a normal work week or less if she prefers. I also ask for her help in hiring an assistant to help her. Lastly, I tell her how important she is to me, and I could not manage my company without her. Her breath hitches and she sniffles a few times. I believe she was as moved as I was. She then says she looks forward to our new year working together.
After we both make several important calls, we snuggle on the couch with my laptop as Tae reads unopened emails to me that were sent over the years from my father. They are incredibly delightful, and hearing fathers' words through Tae's voice is simply magical. For the first time in many years, I am excited for the future.
What a wonderful day. I spoke with father again and told him that Tae and I are not sure when we will return to South Korea. He agreed to come see us in Los Angeles. I can't believe I have my father back in my life. Everything is going perfectly. Tae and I know there is a lot of work ahead, but we will face it together.
