Hau found himself deep in Vast Poni Canyon, looking through rocks and bushes. It had been hours since they had gotten there, but Hau was determined.
"What is it we're looking for again?" Sun asked him.
"A shiny Kommo-o scale, I heard that they're super rare! Imagine how cool it would be to have something that special!" he replied enthusiastically.
Sun sighed, but Hau knew he was smiling, even though he wasn't looking at him. They'd been friends long enough for Hau to know his little quirks. His fake sighs sounded a little different than his real ones, so Hau knew not to take it to heart
He heard Sun start to shuffle behind him and he guessed that he had started searching again. Hau enjoyed small moments like these, ones where he could spend time with Sun, wasting the day away.
"Auwe!" Hau realized that the ground around him had been dyed a tint of redish-orange, "Is it sundown already?!" he looked up to see the sun dipping down over the tops of the canyon.
"Sorry about that Sun, I lost track of time." Hau smiled sheepishly and scratched the back of his head. He really hadn't meant to keep his friend this long, especially since he had champion duties to get to.
But Sun smiled back at him wholeheartedly, "It's fine, I really enjoyed spending some time with you!"
A feeling unlike any other slammed into Hau, he took in the way that Sun smiled, the way they the sun reflected off of him, adding to his radiance. It was all beautiful.
"Yeah..." he mumbled, unable to process anything else.
"Hey Hau, my birthday is next week. I'm busy that day, but do you want to hang out the next day?" he asked, averting his eyes from Hau.
"Huh? Oh, of course! You don't even have to ask!" the green haired boy flashed a wide grin at Sun.
"Well, I've gotta fly for now, see ya later!" Sun called out a Charizard through his pager, waving to the boy as he left.
He watched as the silhouette of the giant lizard disappeared into the distance. Now that he was alone, Hau flopped down onto his back, looking into the sky as the sun went down.
"I have to find something perfect for his birthday." Hau said to himself.
He sat there thinking for a while, thinking about different things he could get, not getting anywhere. The moon made its way into the sky, the sun had finally set.
A faint shimmer caught Hau's eye as he laid there. It reflected the moonlight from behind a shrub, Hau moved it out of the way and picked up the object.
He rubbed his thumb over the object, it had a smooth feel on once side and a gritty texture on the other. It shined with a pink and green glow that was oddly beautiful and alluring despite its odd colors. He had found it.

In that moment Hau knew that this was what he wanted to give to Sun, it was the only thing that had come oven remotely close to giving Hau that same feeling that he got when he was with the other boy.
That night he went home and tried to think of how to give it to him, he figured he'd sleep on it. After all, Sun only deserved the best.
...
The next morning Hau knew just what he wanted to do. Very carefully, he attached a clasp to the top of the scale, before sliding a small simple chain through it to make a necklace.
It was simple, but Sun didn't like flashy, so this would work. As a finishing touch, Hau tried to decide what to engrave on the back, and in a spur of inspiration, he had done it.
Now all he had to do was wait for Sun's birthday. It was going to be great.
...
It was not going to be great.
Hau rolled his eyes as more people flocked the champion. He had wanted to hang out before his birthday, but now he saw the drawbacks of hanging out in public.
Right now, a girl was clasping onto Sun's arm a little too tight for Hau's taste, and she stood a little to close as she practically drooled on him. These people wanted him for his title, and as cool as it was to have a friend who had fans, he just wanted to hang out.
For once, Hau's usually strong tolerance and patience, was wearing strangely thin.
"I got you a present! I hope you like it!" the girl giggled handing Sun a present. Sun looked a little uncomfortable, but also genuinely flattered that she had gotten him a present, and Hau couldn't help but smile at that.
But that smile was swept away when Sun opened the box. He pulled a classy, gold bracelet out of the box and stared at it in awe. By the looks of it, it was clearly expensive, and by expensive he meant tens of thousands of Poke dollars.
In an instant, Hau felt outdone. He was going to give Sun his present that day. But he didn't. That woman wasn't the only one, men and women came by all day and presented Sun extreme gifts that were obviously on the pricey side to try and win the boy's favor. And all at once Hau's normally cheery mood had diminished completely.
A little later, Sun had to leave to return to his champion duties, leaving Hau to sulk at the table they had been at in a local Pokemon Center. He had kept up appearances in front of his friend, and now that he was gone, he scowled at the present box he had meant to give to the boy.
Tears threatened to leave his eyes, and in a fit of emotion, the green haired boy threw the small box into a trash can by the counter before leaving the building.
His present was nothing compared to theirs, and now he was doubting their friendship. The more he thought about, the more he felt like he was holding Sun back. He had never been a match for the boy, what made him think he ever would be?

Before he knew it, days had past. He holed up in his room. Hala had been concerned, but he knew better than to question. Ha rarely got like this, and when he did, he usually needed to be left alone.
But what he really wanted was to see Sun.
It was now the day after his birthday, late in the afternoon. Hau had stayed home the entire day, hardly moving from the spot on his bed. Hala checked in on him every now and then, brought him some food too, but he didn't feel like eating right now.
He tried to talk himself down, but each time he did, the image of those people smothering Sun with live and attention twisted his stomach and put him in a worse mood.
"Hau, I've got to go somewhere. I'll be right back, okay?" Hala said through his door.
"Okay." Hau mumbled back. After he heard the door close, he let out a sigh. Tears fell freely from his eyes now, he hadn't wanted Hala to see him cry.
He was surprised to hear the door open again, and he assumed it was just Hala and that maybe had forgotten something. The sound of quick footsteps proved him wrong as his door swung open.
There stood Sun in his doorway, heaving breaths like he had run a mile.
"Are you okay?!" Sun asked, making his way towards the bed. The first thing Hau felt was confusion as to why Sun was here, then he felt embarrassed at his current state. His hair was down out of its pony tail, and it was messy, his eyes were red from crying, and tears still flowed from his eyes.
"I'm fine..." Hau said, looking towards the wall, he couldn't look Sun in the eyes right now. He felt below him.
"Then what's going on?" the boy asked, leaning over to try and look at Hau. The concern in his voice hurt Hau, so he looked away again.
"Why won't you look at me?" he said, his voice was starting to have an edge to it. He felt the bed shift and suddenly he was thrown onto his back, forced to look up at Sun who was on top of him.
"Did I do something wrong?!" he cried, his eyes watering.
Anger flared up in Hau, "Why would you think that?! It's my fault! I can't keep up with your fans! Why do you even pity me like this?" he shouted, his words much harsher than he had intended. He struggled underneath Sun, trying to free himself, when something sparkled under Sun's shirt.
A chain slipped out from under his shirt, and the shimmering scale rattle down to the end of it, reflecting the moon that came through Hau's window.
He gasped as he saw it,"I thought... How did you?" he sputtered, the scale turning so Hau could see the words he had etched into it.
'Love Hau'
He had tried to think of something nice or catchy, but that was all that had occurred to him.
"Nurse Joy gave it to me, she found it in the trash. What's going on?" he asked, his brows etched with worry. Hau looked at his wrist, the bracelet wasn't there, after that girl had spent so much.
"I... I got jealous. I suppose." Hau bit his lip and turned away, he felt petty now. Thinking that his friend was abandoning him over something so little, it was an insult to Sun, but he still couldn't shake the feeling.
"I don't understand it! Why are you jealous?" he asked, his voice going a little shrill. He must've realized the tone he had taken and he backed off, getting up off of the boy.
They sat in silence. An uncomfortable one, not like their usually lighthearted silence.
Sun opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again. Hau couldn't quite see his eyes, but he didn't try, after all he was still avoiding his gaze.
Finally, he spoke, "Do you lo-" he paused for an awkward amount of time before beginning again, "love me, or not?" His voice cracked, hitting a little bit of a higher pitch than Hau expected it to.
It hit him like the vast wave of feelings he had felt the other day, but this time it was a different form of awe. This time, this vulnerability he was sensing, in himself and in Sun.
He couldn't hold himself back from the emotions he felt this time, this time he let them take over.
He leaned forward across the small space between them, using his arms to support himself. Their lips pressed together, but they were both tense, and it didn't feel quite right. Nonetheless, neither of them moved, understanding the meaning behind the action no matter how weird.
"I-I do. I didn't mean to worry you. I was being petty, and kinda stupid." Hau's voice drifted off and he scratched the back of his head.
He didn't understand why he had gone through such drama, he was laid back and he usually kept it like that, but even more so he was mad at himself for dragging Sun into his meaningless quarrel with himself.
"I guess even you get irritated sometimes," Sun chuckled trying to lighten the mood, "And I guess I'm a little flattered that you would get this jealous over me." he scratched his cheek.
They both bust into laughter, laying back on Hau's bed. They spent the rest of the night spending time together like they were supposed to. Every now and then, Hau's eyes would flick down to the necklace that laid lazily on Sun's chest as he laughed.
He looked back at Sun and smiled, "Love you."

Digital Immigrant
This is the story of how James Allen Quick and Sarah Lynn Abernathy died. By 'died', I mean that their hearts stopped, their brains ceased sending electrical impulses, and all other physical functions terminated. Immediately after which, their bodies were placed into an industrial furnace, reduced to ash, and the ash was spread about in one of the last forest reserves in North America. As ash-spreading locations go, this ranked third. First and second places were, of course, a person’s favorite athletic team’s playing field and the sea. Or rather, I should say that this is how the story begins. You see, it’s what came after that is so interesting.
