Like a turtle, I retracted into my shell. I saw what was out there, and the noise was deafening. I saw the freak show in full swing, from the clowns and the jugglers to the sword eater and the man who breathed fire. I felt pity for the caged animals and humans who were victims of circumstance. I slowly moved about, trying hard not to draw too much attention to myself, which was in stark contrast to the trapeze artists who thrive in the limelight. I cozy up next to a stack of hay and pray that no one discovers me; the last thing I need is to be a part of this circus.
