《Korean Language 101》Table manners 2

We learnt 있어요 not long ago. Now we will learn phrases to appreciate the meal.

맛 (mat) = taste

있어요 = have/has

맛있어요 = tasty

But 맛있어요 would be pronounced like 'mash-isseoyo' instead of 'mat-isseoyo'. Why?

Its 받침. Korean pronounciation rules. If you want to master it, you should consider other books or lessons for that. I never looked at it yet it fell into place with time.

Today, I'll tell you something. If ㅅ or ㅆ are placed like 것 or 맛 or 있다, they have two pronunciations.

If written alone, 것 and 맛 will carry the ㅅ but if not alone; if they come in the form 맛+있어요, they will drop the ㅅ.

Another case, 있다 is pronounced as 'it-da' because after 있 there is 다 and 다 has a consonant before a vowel, therefore the ㅆ here will sound like 't' and not like 'ss'. But in 있어요, 있 + 어요 is pronounced like 'isseoyo' because after 있, there is 어요 and 어요 starts with the sound of a vowel (ㅇ is silent).

Got it?

For now just think about ㅅ and ㅆ having this rule. I'll explain others later on when they come in use.

맛있어(요) = tasty

Therefore to compliment food, you can say many phrases such as the following.

이 차 맛있어요

김밥 맛있어요

김치 맛있어요

커피 맛있어요

케잌 맛있어요

케잌 - cake

That's it for today :)
