《After Dark》Chapter 15

Eliza and Bessie sat quietly in the cell. All of the other acts were with them as well, but as the night went on more and more began getting bailed out. Eliza knew no one who would help her, and so she figured she'd be stuck for however long they wanted to keep her.
"You never told me what that stuff would do." Eliza called attention to Bessie. That was the first time she acknowledged her after the incident.
Bessie perked up, surprised that Eliza would even speak to her. She was eager for Eliza to hear her side. "I didn't think it would mess you up like that!"
Eliza glared at Bessie.
"But you know what? It does act differently in every person." Bessie slouched in her seat. "Maybe I shouldn't have given it to you before your set."
"You think?" Eliza asked. "If I wasn't high on that drug I would be lucid enough to find my way out!"
An officer at a desk across from the cell looked up from his papers and stared at the girls. Eliza knew it was time to get silent, and the officer slowly returned back to work.
"Why don't you call your little boyfriend to get us out?" Bessie asked. "He has money!"
"Guys like William are allergic to institutions such as these." Eliza answered Bessie. "And besides, I don't believe we're talking anymore."
"Why? Because he left you again?" Bessie asked. "That's how those men are. That's how all men are. They come in, they blow a lump and then they leave."
"I wasn't raised to act like that with men." Eliza mentioned. "I don't like how he acts with me."
"Yeah, yeah. You were rich up in that white neighborhood and now you think you can't be like the rest of us." Bessie pointed out.

"We were never rich." Eliza pointed out. "But yes, my father was a doctor. And I don't see nothing wrong with that."
"Mhm, when you fall on hard times you can go back there." Bessie explained. "This is all I have."
A cop made his way over to the cell and stood with his hands on his hips. Although he were inside, he wore his high rounded hat. "Eliza Miller?"
"That's me." Eliza answered, but she was slightly reluctant to do so. She didn't know what to expect next. She walked up to the officer, the only thing separating them being the bars. The bars casted a certain shadow on Eliza's face.
"Someone's bailed you out." The officer told her.
"Who?" Eliza asked. "I never contacted anyone."
"Someone by the name of Connor O'Bryan?" The officer told her, then unlocked the cell to open the door. "You're free to go."
"I'm not going with him." Eliza crossed her arms.
"If you don't, I will!" A man said sassily from his seat. Eliza shut her eyes and exhaled. Then followed the officer out.
"Well what about me?" Bessie asked in a panic.
"I'll see what I can do." Eliza said as she looked back at Bessie.
Eliza followed the officer into the lobby of the station. Connor stood by the door, his hands in the pockets of his long coat and the rim of his hat covering most of his face. He lifted it with a finger once he saw Eliza approach him. His height towered over Eliza's.
"Thanks officer, you have a nice night." Connor told him as he began guiding Eliza out.
"Say, you wouldn't know where William is?" The officer asked.
Connor slowly turned to the officer. He was much taller than him as well. "William who?"
"You know, William. Your partner in crime, William. No other than William McGill." The officer challenged him.

"I don't know a William McGill." Connor told the officer.
"Well, if it'll help your memory, you'd be well compensated to let us know about him." The officer told Connor. Then he motioned toward Eliza. "Does your little girlfriend here know about him too?"
"Come on, Eliza." Connor placed a hand on her back and they both exited. Once outside, Connor lit a cigarette. "William's waiting for you in the car."
"I don't want to see him." Eliza crossed her arms over her chest. "I'm done with him."
"You guys are never done." Connor reminded her. "Come on, I've never seen two people be so for each other."
Eliza was on the verge of tears. "I'm exhausted, Connor! I don't know how much longer I can do this."
Connor nodded knowingly, blowing out his cigarette smoke. "He was afraid of that."
Eliza smiled to herself for a moment. "At least he's afraid of something."
"Well let us at least drop you home." Connor offered. "Just to make sure you get back safe."
"It's broad daylight, I can go home myself." Eliza insisted. "And I know if I let him come home with me, all he'll do is have sex with me then leave!"
"We have business, Eliza. You have to understand is that he needs to be in meetings at a moment's notice." Connor explained. "He doesn't leave you to be a dog. He just has responsibility."
"Then why won't he let me be part of that?" Eliza asked. "I know other gangster guys have girlfriends and they're happy!"
"Because it's dangerous." Connor explained. "When you're linked to him in the streets, you're just as likely to get killed as he is."
"Then I don't want to be part of this. I can't continue giving myself to someone without anything in return!" Eliza went on. "I can't go steady with a man who can't enter a police station without getting arrested! It's not who I am!"
"What do you want?" Connor asked in a genuine tone.
"Huh?" Eliza asked.
"What is it that you want?" Connor asked. "If you let me know, I can tell him. And then we can see if he can give that to you. But when it comes to that lovey dovey stuff in your head, that's not possibly sweetcakes. But if you want something else, we can do it for you."
"I want him." Eliza answered. "Just him. Without this life."
"This life is all he knows now." Connor answered. "And the only way to get out of it is with a bullet to the head."
Eliza felt a shiver through her body, she crossed her arms while trying to rid her mind of that thought. She looked to the pavement as her mind raced. She thought of meeting William, getting closer to him, falling in love with him. And then she was faced with an ugly thought, one of her worst fears. His demise.
"I can't watch him die." Eliza told Connor. "I know it'll happen some way or another, but I can't be there to know about it."
"What are you suggesting?" Connor asked as he took a drag of his cigarette.
"I'm saying that William and I are through. If I want any lick of sanity, we have to end it here."
"Are you sure about that?" Connor asked. A tear fell down Eliza's cheek as she nodded yes, then walked off from him. Connor's body tensed as he dropped his cigarette. After putting it out with the sole of his loafer, he walked a block away from the station and around the corner.

The Priest of Genes
Meet Seth, acolyte in the Church of Virtue. He’ll be a Priest like his father soon, he just knows it. Sure he didn’t inherit his mother’s preaching power, but he doesn’t mind being the secondary priest at whatever temple he is assigned to. Just as long as he has a library. Meet this genetics textbook. Hmm, that doesn’t belong here. It must have come from somewhere far away, I guess something happened to its owner. I’m sure a studious young man who likes healing could go far with this information, whether he wants to or not. This is my first time really writing anything, so I hope you like it! Please let me know if I make any mistakes; I have a new R&D tech job at a genomics company, so I probably don’t edit as much as some people. I’m shooting for two thousand-ish word chapters released on Sundays, since none of the webnovels I read ever seem to update that day. Underserved Market! Genre is fantasy, possibly progression fantasy. Maybe a tiny bit litRPG if you wait a while and squint really hard, but that’s the most I’m prepared to claim. Hedged my bets on the content warnings, nothing that bad. Cover art from A. W. Gelman

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.

The sea of stars. The momentaneous lifeforms that flicker far away. Our futures — a sea brimming with light. Each and every shimmer in the starry canvas serves as one’s infinite opportunities in the vast sea of the future. On a once unremarkable day, a mysterious girl displayed powers beyond the capabilities of humans in front of many onlookers who knew only the ordinary: Powers of Ice creation. Riki, a normal young man in the midst of the crowd, was astonished to see such a spectacle, but this astonishment quickly transforms into dismay. From the appearance of calm, yet scorching blue flames, he realized the sole reason she was using powers in the first place was to only protect herself from two who have possession of powers akin to hers. And in failing to do so, the last thing Riki saw was the angst look in her eyes before she disappeared from his sight. That was the only one remaining memory he can recall. Thrusted into an organization filled with supernatural stargazers, Riki's only goal is to retake everything back: a journey to take back both his past and his future. Through this journey, it will mean to discover the underlying truths of the world. Any illustrations I use for covers and chapters are illustrations I have drawn myself unless otherwise stated.

The Errant Otherworlder Watanabe
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and trucks whom transport men to other worlds.” Meet our titular protagonist Haruto Watanabe, a man who has all the markings of a good protagonist for a generic portal fantasy story. As an overworked office worker, to escape from the grips of crippling capitalist alienation, he had taken up to reading many stories where young men like him were transported to other worlds and enjoyed their lives at a most leisurely pace. Armed with genre-awareness and (what he believes to be) a marketable personality which would make him an easy audience self-insert, he longed for the day the isekai express would take him to his long-awaited adventure to another world. When the fateful day came, where the fair yet harsh mistress that is the fabled truck took Watanabe on one last date to the other side, he was most ready to escape his previous life, ready to embark on an errant so great he’d be most overpowered, his heroics so exceptional and his harem so vast that they would barely fit ten or twenty volumes of an overly long novel made by a desperate author looking for quick cash. Lo and behold however, Watanabe instead found himself in a low fantasy world which lacked severely in the department of any game-like systems, cheat skills or easily charmed damsels in distress. In a setting so antithetical to his established genre savviness or any attempts at power fantasy, how will a man like Watanabe, lacking in strength, wits and courage, manage to survive in a land most foreign to him? This is my first time trying to share to the wider world what I’ve written, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading the errantry of Watanabe as much as I enjoy writing about them. I'll be posting one chapter per week on Sundays, along with extra chapters whenever I get the chance to write more than usual.
