《After Dark》Chapter 21

"What— make you — call?" The fuzzy voice buzzed into the receiver. William shut his eyes and squeezed his eyebrow bridge. He never truly got along with his father.
"Dad, I don't have time. I need to leave Manhattan stat." William told him. "I need to go back to my old room."
"Don't— back here." The man answered.
"I don't have a choice, Pa." William told him in desperation. "You're all I got."
"Until you— have a good— life." The man said into the phone.
"Good life?" William asked, he could hardly hear through the phone.
"A good wife!" The man corrected. "And yes, a good life."
"I've got to stick out there. Just for a while." William told his dad. "Then I won't come back."
There was a silence on the other end.
"I'm not excited about it either." William said. "Please."
There was a click on the phone. Then dead silence. The operator returned to the line. "Would you like me to reconnect you?"
"I'm fine. Thank you." William slammed the receiver of the phone. His blue eyes looked to Connor, who held onto a makeshift bandage wrapped around his arm. "The gun wound alright?"
"Those fuckers only nicked me." Connor told him as a cigarette hung out of his mouth. "Will, we should probably go."
"And where to?" William asked. "Out there the police will just be after us."
"I highly doubt we're welcome here." Connor reminded William.
"Yeah? No shit." William huffed, then lit himself a cigarette. "While we're here, we need to make a plan on how to get Jack out of jail."
"They didn't give him bail. Probably knew we could afford to get him out." Bunny commented.

"That kid is too young to be in there. They probably put him in with hard guys." William thought. "He's not ready for all of that."
"Then let's break him out." Bunny laughed as he twiddled with the cigar between his fingers.
"They've gotten much better at keeping people in the jails." Connor explained. "We don't need another reason to get pinched."
"He's my cousin." William reminded the boys. "And I want him out!"
"We're working on it." Connor ensured him. "We just have to figure out who can do it."
The next person they called was Eugene, the ultimate boss in their gang. "And you see, they caught him and locked him up." William said through the phone receiver.
"I don't understand how this happened in the first place." Eugene angrily said through the phone. Eugene laid in bed as he had the rotary phone receiver pressed to his ear. Next to him was his Japanese girl, who was nakedly sleeping beside him. "My guys all in the news paper, you think this looks good?"
William squeezed his eyes shut. "No."
"Of course it doesn't fucking look good!" Eugene shouted. "And the fact you'd call me is even more offensive."
"You're the only one we know who can get him out." William told him.
"And one of you imbeciles let this happen in the first place. Why would I get out a random low rank kid who I don't even know?" Eugene asked.
"Because he isn't equipped for this." William answered.
"So he shouldn't be in my business!" Eugene shouted, then slammed the phone down onto the receiver. The loud bang harmonized with the echoing of bells inside the phone.
His Japanese girlfriend stirred in her sleep, then turned to him. She furrowed her eyebrows as she looked to him through sleepily. He looked down at her, her naked body only covered by the sheet up to her hip.

"What the hell, come on up." He pulled her to straddle his lap, she laughed out as she felt a rush of adrenaline.
Eliza walked toward her building with Bessie, her mood slightly improved since their somber train ride. To her delight, she saw Herbert's car parked in front. Looking to the entrance, she saw Herbert leaning against her building in a three piece suit.
"Eliza!" Herbert outreached his hands. "I figured you'd be back around this time."
"Herbert, I wasn't expecting you." Eliza smiled, looking in awe at Herbert. He looked back with just as much admiration. Then, she was snapped out of her trance when she remembered her friend's presence. "Oh, this is my friend, Bessie. I'm not sure if you've both formally met."
"Herbert Johnson. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." He answered shaking her hand.
"Pleasure is all mine." Bessies eyes crawled up and down Herbert.
"I was hoping we could go out tonight." Herbert stuffed his hands into his pockets. "But if your girlfriend is here she can tag along."
"Oh, we were just planning on staying in. A lot has happened lately and I don't feel up for wining and dining." Eliza answered.
"Of course." Herbert nodded, then he lifted his hat. "Well, I'll just leave you both to your girl's day."
Before Herbert could walk off, Bessie called out to him. "Wait!"
Herbert turned around and looked to them both.
"We aren't doing anything special. You can come upstairs and spend some time with us." Bessie offered. "There's three of us, so I'm sure we don't damage Eliza's reputation."
"That's been damaged enough." Eliza joked. "But I'm not sure..."
"I'd love to." Herbert smiled. "If that's alright with you of course."
Eliza looked to Bessie who seemed to have so much excitement in her eyes. Then to Herbert who seemed to look forward to being with her as well. So she broke under pressure. "Well, I suppose it won't do much harm. Yeah, come on up Herbert."
"That's just swell!" Bessie exclaimed, then grabbed her friend's hand. "Come on, ladies first."
After Herbert opened the door for them, Eliza and Bessie began going up the steps first. "This is perfect. It's like he just dropped from out of the sky!"
"What do you mean?" Eliza whispered.
"The perfect way to get over a fella is to get under one." Bessie told her friend. "If you let this guy court you, you'll be over that Irish boy in no time!"
"He's already been taking me out..." Eliza told Bessie.
"And if he didn't show up today all you would've done was sulk over the other one." Bessie told her. "How come on, we can go upstairs, we can have drinks. Let's do this!"
After many flights of stairs, the girls finally reached the top. Herbert was right behind and hardly seemed out of breath once reaching. Except he did take the liberty of removing his hat.
"Here we are." Eliza said excitedly. She put her key into the hole and turned it, but then realized there was nothing to turn. Her door was already unlocked.
Eliza swiftly opened her door to find three men inside. It was no other than Connor, Bunny.
...And of course, William.

"I'm Screwed" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This story uses the system derived by Puddles4263 in Randidly Ghosthound. I've incorporates the Path's system into the leveling of this story. Some of the beginning paths will be similar or the same as I thought that the starting paths were very logical on how a system should start. The stories will be completely different as the characters and story arcs will be completely different. Again, thank you Puddles for allowing me to use your system, really appreciate it! I also wanted to thank ProFound Magician. Has a lot of insight into a story development and as his system is based on Ghosthound, I saw a some beginning stage skills that should be thought of in a character just starting out. If you haven't yet read Ghosthound or Genesis System you're in for a real treat when you do! Thank you both I hope my use is seen as an homage in the beginning. Hopefully my story can live up to the system.
