《After Dark》Chapter 30

Eliza and Leonard crossed the grounds of the McGills into the dining room. There, everyone had been seated for breakfast. The table was long, and Mr. McGill sat at the head. On one side of him sat Florence, on the other side was William. Then Connor, and Bunny sat across from him.
Eliza reached to take a seat next to Connor, but was suddenly interrupted by Mr. McGill. "Eliza, help yourself where we've placed your plate."
Florence immediately looked around. Eliza became flustered. Her throat became so tight the words could hardly come out. "I do not see another plate."
"Down there." Mr. McGill motioned. Eliza looked at the other end of the table, the very, very, long table. And at the end sat a table setting. She began walking down, humiliated. And there she sat in front of the plate, looking sorrowfully. All of the food were toward everyone else on the other end, as well as the drinks. She didn't understand how she'd possibly get food.
"Would you like anything to drink?" One of the maids asked.
Eliza held back tears. "No, thank you."
Leonard looked woefully, he slowly began to walk off. William was so filled with anger, it took everything in him not to sock his father in the face. He held onto his utensils so tightly, his knuckles turned white. Then in one motion, he stood up from his seat and grabbed his plate. Walking down the long dining room, he took a seat next to Eliza, then quietly continued eating his food.
Florence tried to hold in her laughter. Connor covered his hand over his mouth softly, contemplating William's actions and silently commending him for it. Bunny huffed.
"You fool." Mr. McGill's voice echoed toward William. "The food is over here."

The next to stand up was Connor. He picked up his own plate as well as the serving plate of eggs and bacon. Confidently he made his way over to the other end of the table, taking a seat across from William and on the other side of Eliza.
"I will never understand." Mr. McGill continued eating his food.
Next Florence stood up. She took her plate in her hand then reached for another serving plate, but then stopped herself. "Assistance." She said calmly. The maids immediately walked over and took the serving plates, and all of them walked to the other end of the table.
Bunny looked at everyone on the opposite end, then looked to Mr. McGill. He felt perspiration forming on his forehead. Almost forcefully he stood up, taking his plate. Before walking off he looked to Mr. McGill with a goofy smile. "I'd like a second serving, you see."
"I won't have it!" Mr. McGill slammed his fist on the table. Bunny sped up his walking to get to the other end. "I simply won't be disrespected in my own home!"
"Salt?" Florence asked everyone around her as she lifted the salt shaker, then added salt to her eggs.
"Never in all my years have I seen our people become so weak!" Mr. McGill shouted. "They're everywhere! Infesting our schools, our stores, our neighborhoods. And now one has infested my home. And brainwashed my son."
Eliza stood up from her seat, and William tried to keep her in her chair. "This isn't your fight to fight." He whispered to her.
"It absolutely is." Eliza swiped her hand out of his clasp. She walked back over to Mr. McGill, courage filling her veins. "I will not be disrespected whether I stand in your home or not."

"You're—" Mr. McGill tried to speak.
"I am a human being." Eliza corrected. "And I demand your respect and attention. It wasn't my choice to be here, I was brought here by your son. And if I continue to be treated this way, then I'll simply leave."
"That sounds like a wonderful idea." Mr. McGill said sarcastically.
"She doesn't go anywhere." William shouted. "If she goes then I'll never return. And you'll never have the son you've fought so hard to get."
"You're not the son I raised." Mr. McGill shouted across the table. Florence suddenly lost her appetite.
"How about you all take a stroll outside? I'll handle this grumpy old man." She suggested. Everyone except for Florence and Mr. McGill rose from their seats. As Bunny stood, he tried to get in a few more bites of his breakfast.
They all followed behind William toward the backyard. As they walked Eliza noticed how his choice of dress had changed while they were at home. He wore white slacks with a white shirt on top, a beige sweater vest tucked into his slacks.
This was attire was very much affluent, and while Eliza was used to William dressing well she'd yet to see him dress quite like that. There was almost a snobbish tone to the way he dressed. He even wore his hair differently, trading his heavily slicked back hair for a more natural style parted down the middle with waved hair crowning either side of his forehead.
They walked outside, Connor and Bunny immediately began heading for the tennis court. Eliza began following behind, but William took her hand. "Let's take a stroll of our own."
They changed their direction and followed along a path on the grounds. Together they walked side by side, very little being said. Eliza finally decided to bring up the obvious.
"Your attire." She noted. He looked at her with confusion furrowing his brows, then realized what she was referring to.
An almost embarrassed smile spread across his face. "These are the only clothes I have here. It's how I dressed before I left."
"When you were a teenager?" Eliza asked, stopping to get a good look at him. William tried to hide his embarrassment behind a rugged expression as Eliza swiped the wool of his sweater vest. "It hardly fits you any longer."
"I've grown into a man." William answered. "These don't suit me anymore."
They walked further into a harden area. There were flowers of almost every kind, and they were made to be in a circle. Multiple paths were within the circle of flowers, and at the center sat two benches where would could sit and admire them.
Eliza looked off to the side and saw lots of hedges. "Is that a maze that I see!"
