《After Dark》Chapter 34

Eliza sat in the guest house and watched television by herself. The door opened, and she found that it was Lydia. The blonde walked over and took a seat next to Eliza. She watched the small, curved screen for a moment.
"It gets so cold when the sun sets this time of year, doesn't it?" She struck up conversation.
"Yes, it does." Eliza answered short and sweetly. She didn't care to have much conversation with Lydia, something about her made her feel particularly unsafe.
"There is something so serenading about your voice." Lydia complimented Eliza. "You don't speak like others of your race."
"I don't know what you meant by that." Answered Eliza. "I speak like myself and that's all that matters to me."
Lydia rose a fluffy, but attractive eyebrow. "Well, you still have their prickly demeanor."
Eliza squinted at the screen, then finally looked back at Lydia who sat next to her. "What brings you here, Lydia? It's surely getting late."
"I've spent the day with William." Lydia answered. "Catching up and what now. And must I say, he's oddly concerned with you. He kept asking for your whereabouts."
"Is there a reason why you've decided to keep me company?" Eliza asked, and Lydia's sweet exterior slightly melted away.
"I just want to get to know you a bit more." Lydia told Eliza. "Figure out exactly what it is about you that's so enchanting."
"I've wondered the same about you but I haven't found the interest to investigate." Eliza answered. "I'd much rather concern myself with other matters."
"You must really enjoy being here, don't you?" Lydia asked. "Finally in a home with heat and running water."
"I have all of those luxuries and more at my own apartment." Eliza answered, squeezing the hem of her dress. She was running out of patience.

"You're well spoken, you seem to have an okay home." Lydia listed. "Are you well read?"
"I enjoy reading." Eliza answered reluctantly.
"Great! What have you read recently?" Lydia questioned.
"Well, I'm currently reading a book called The Great Gatsby. It's very interesting." Eliza answered.
"The Great Gatsby. Never heard of it. Sounds like a children's book." Lydia laughed, stroking her thick blonde hair as she moved in her seat.
"If I didn't know better, I would believe you are being unkind." Eliza pointed out.
"Never, I would never disrespect William's bedwench." Lydia answered. Eliza tried everything in her power not to slap Lydia right then and there. Before she could even act, there was a knock on the door. "Now, you should be the one to get that."
Eliza stood up and walked past where Lydia sat. She opened the door and found the butler standing there.
"I am in search of Mrs. Lydia." He answered. Eliza stepped to the side to show where she sat. Lydia looked uninterested as she made contact with Leonard. "Mrs. Lydia, your husband has arrived."
The word husband caused Lydia to tense. Eliza smiled from where she sat. Lydia looked over her shoulder at Eliza, she couldn't help but witness her judgement.
"Husband?" Eliza questioned. Lydia ignored Eliza's remark and spoke to Leonard.
"Well, what would bring him here? I told him not to bother to come over. I figured he'd be tired after work." Lydia tried to smooth over the situation.
Leonard wasn't allowed to have extended discussions with guests, and so he just gave her a stare. With a scoff she pushed past Leonard and began making her way to the main building.
Eliza stood up and walked over to Leonard, crossing her arms. "What a wonder. How long has she been married?"

Leonard hesitated, but knew that his words would be in good hands with Eliza. "Within the first year of Mr. William's departure, they eloped,"
"Does William know?" Eliza asked Leonard, who had a curious expression on his face.
"That, I would not know." Leonard answered. "Would you like me to escort you back to the main house."
"Surely." Eliza perked up. "I believe that we've got a show on our hands."
Leonard tried to hold in his cackle.
In the main house, William stood in the foyer with Arthur Fortson. He was William's good friend in high school. Unlike William, he was a great student and athlete. And he was just as popular. Standing tall and handsome, he had dark black hair that he slicked back. One could even say he had a likeness similar to Clark Gable.
William was ecstatic to see his old friend. They performed an old handshake that they'd made up as boys. Then Arthur wrapped William in a warm embrace. "Finally, you're back!"
"This tiger is back!" William laughed as they hugged. "You look great, Arthur. What have you been up to?"
Arthur paused, but kept on his smile. "Well, I've gotten into the family business. I left those old football dreams behind."
"Arthur Fortson leaving behind football. Seems impossible!" William laughed.
"It's not like you did all that you said you would. Who would've thought you'd take off the way you did! How was Europe?" Arthur asked.
"Europe?" William questioned.
"Well, your father said you went off to study in Europe." Arthur clarified. William's face suddenly had a look of anger for a moment. Arthur immediately realized that he'd said the wrong thing. "Oh, well I guess it doesn't matter. All that matters is that the Tiger is back!"
"He sure is." Said Lydia, who seemed like a deer in headlights.
Arthur turned pale at the sight of her. "Lydia dear, how long have you been standing there?"
"Long enough." Lydia forced out a laugh. William noticed the energy between them.
"Dear?" William asked. Lydia walked over to Arthur and he wrapped an arm around her. "Oh, I see. You're going steady."
Lydia and Arthur looked to one another. "Going steady is something you do when you're a child. No, William. We're married."
Lydia held out her finger to show William the ring. His eyebrows rose at the sight of it. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and let out a whistle. "That's a rock."
"You don't mind, do you?" Lydia questioned.
Arthur took a glimpse at the tears forming in his wife's eyes, but chose to ignore them. "Yeah, knowing that you and Lydia went steady for a while."
"Mind?" William asked. "I'm glad for you! I think you two make a wonderful couple?"
Lydia blinked away tears. "Really?"
"Well, it's not like I'd be any competition to Arthur. He makes a great husband for you." William answered. "Arthur, are you joining us for dinner?"
"Yeah, I am actually." Arthur was surprised at William's reaction. He truly didn't seem to mind at all. He wondered why William had zero feelings for his high school sweetheart.
"Great. Let's get heading to the table."

Art of Mortality
New Synopsis after chapter 56: Long long ago, there was a mortal who despised the gods and envied the immortals. Why do the mortals have to die when the gods wish them to? Why do worlds have to perish when the gods say so? Why do only immortals get to live forever, why not mortals like him? As his family, friends, and his loved one died, he lamented. He wailed, he cried. He cursed the immortals, blasphemed the gods, spat at the heavens. But he was just a mere mortal. His curses were pointless, his blasphemous words were useless, and his spits only returned back to fall on his face. At last, he thought, enough was enough, he would definitely do something about it. He decided that it was time for the multiverse to know what a mortal can do. He was the first mortal to cultivate. Eventually, after a long struggle, he killed the Immortals, enslaved the Gods, and shattered the heavens. He reshaped the multiverse and rewrote his fate. In the end, he reincarnated as he decided upon a grand scheme, a scheme to rule 'All and Always'. He came up with the concept of what is known today as 'Paragon'. And with this, all of reality, 'All and Always', was finally reforming, according to a Mortal's Wish. Synopsis (Old): In the vast and complex multiverse, what can a mortal accomplish? In the grand scheme of things, what can a mortal change? In truth, what is a mortal, and what is mortality? Being mortal is being ordinary, the same as being trash, or so says The World. "No, mortality is an art, and a true mortal is a grand artist. Being the root of all, a mortal can become anything.", says a young mortal boy. Meet Edward Alexander, a mortal boy walking the path against gods and immortals, fighting to the end to rewrite his destiny, and change the grand scheme of things. Can he really change the grand scheme of things? Or maybe he himself is the Grand Schemer? To know the answer, follow Edward Alexnder on his journey to demonstrate the Art of Mortality.*******
