As I help Skye with her fire arm shooting in The Shooting Range, Skye shoots the target ten times until her clip is empty, and I take my protective glasses and headphones off when she's done. I then bring then press the button on the desk, and it brings the target towards us so I can look at the damage as Skye puts the gun down and takes her glasses and headphones off.
"I imagined they were all Ward." Skye tells me as I see that she her aim has improved since a few weeks ago.
"Imagine they're all targets. Don't get cocky. This is step one. It's all about control-" I try to say as Skye talks over me.
"-Control. I know... Over your mind, your body..." Skye trails off as I still speak.
"-Don't forget your mind. In the field, you need to maintain control. Whatever the situation: hostages, bombs about to go off." I explain to her.
"So, what you're saying is what I just did was puny and sad." Skye says to me as I pick up her right wrist and look at her fit-bit to see what her heart rate was.
"61 beats per minute. Consistent the whole time. Not that puny." I assure her as I walk over to the rifles as Mack and Hunter push in a cart full with new tools and equipment.
"Speaking of not puny..." Skye trails off as she looks at the rifle, and I check the clip hold.
"Yeah, I want you to get used to this. It's a sniper rifle." I explains to her.
"Huh. Pardon me. Uh, just one quick question. You went to S.H.I.E.L.D. academy, right?" Hunter asks Skye.
"You didn't." I say to Hunter "Even if you did or went to the Police Academy, you would have known better than to shoot us." I explain him.
"Apology number 470. I am very sorry, Agent Johnson." Hunter apologises to me.
"Don't be sorry. Just wait." I warn him.
"Uh, we just have a little wager. Uh, so, did you?.." Mack trails off to Skye.
"Go to the academy? Yeah, no." Skye shakes her head, and Hunter sighs dramatically, and Mack turns to Hunter.
"No. All right, well, have fun with the inventory. And remember, Koenig likes them neat. Oh, and, uh, none of those euro sevens with the lines through them. Drives him crazy." Mack explains to Hunter before he leaves.
"Coulson said you were a field agent with a badge and everything." Hunter says to Skye confused as she picks up a water bottle, and I set up the rifle for Skye to practice with.
"More like a work-study thing. Badge, I had for like a day before S.H.I.E.L.D..." Skye trails off before she makes an explosion sound, and she takes a sip of her water.
"You know, Hartley she loved her blade, hated guns. Idaho, if on a job someone ended up dead, he'd go to church, light a candle. Said it'd balance the karma. See, I knew them, what they'd do, not do. So, us being workmates and all..." Hunter trails off to Skye, wondering if she's killed anyone. She hasn't.
"You're wondering if I've ever taken anyone out." Skye says to him.
"Have you?" Hunter asks Skye.
"Not that I know of." Skye says uncomfortably before she steps away.
"Hey." I lightly tap Hunter on his left upper arm with my right hand "Don't you have inventory?" I ask him.
"I suppose now I do. Good afternoon, ladies." Hunter says to us before he pushes the cart away as he leaves, and Skye salutes him.
"Practice. I want you to get used to the recoil." I tell Skye as I hand her the clip for the rifle "And for the record, experience doesn't make it any easier to cross someone off." I assure her.
After Coulson returned from his debriefing with Simmons as she is working undercover as a biochemist for H.Y.D.R.A., Coulson has returned with suspicion that H.Y.D.R.A. is trying to recruit Donnie Gill who was sent on his lonesome when S.H.I.E.L.D. was taken down, and that he might have enabled some sort of ice powers from the machine that he built at The Academy. Coulson is now debriefing May and the team, which includes Skye, Triplett, Hunter and Mack, as Coulson has sent me down to see Ward to find out how H.Y.D.R.A. recruits people. So right now as I interrogate Ward, I sit on the chair outside of his cell as Ward leans against the left wall of his cell.
"Well, they're not exactly what you'd call welcoming. They don't give you a choice." Ward responds to my previous question about how H.Y.D.R.A. recruit agents and/ or gifted people.
"So, what do they give you? Money? Threats? Torture? Combo platter?" I ask him.
"They're good at convincing people." Ward states.
"Yeah, well, they suckered you in." I say to him.
"No. I was never loyal to H.Y.D.R.A. I was loyal to Garrett." Ward states.
"Oh. Garrett is the reason you're a cold-blooded killer." I say to him.
"I don't blame him for the choices I've made." Ward tells me.
"Right. I seem to of heard you blamed your brother. Or was it your parents? Man, I can't keep up." I say to him honestly.
"My family tore me down. Garrett built me back up... The way he wanted." Ward explains to me.
"We're all aware of who your family is, Ward. Not only are they respected. They're pretty much loved." I explain to him.
"Well, every family has its secrets." Ward smiles at me "Yours does, too. You ever wonder why-" He tries to say, but I cut him off.
"-You know what? My bad. I slipped. Talked to you like a normal person. Let's stay on task." I tell him.
"You make the rules... H.Y.D.R.A.'s protocol on gifted is pretty straightforward. An acquisition team is sent out to convince or capture the gifted. If those two options aren't possible, then they'll take them out." Ward explains to me.
"Even if the gifted doesn't pose a threat?" I ask him confused.
"A gifted that refuses H.Y.D.R.A. is a threat. And threats are taken care of quickly." Ward explains to me.
"That's the difference between S.H.I.E.L.D. and H.Y.D.R.A." I state.
"And that's why H.Y.D.R.A. will win. Because while a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is considering right and wrong, H.Y.D.R.A.'s already taken the shot." Ward explains to me.
After we located Gill's whereabouts, in which he has made it easy for us and H.Y.D.R.A. to find him, I brief my team, Skye, Triplett and Hunter on our mission from Coulson, and Coulson and May stand by as Mack and Fitz are on the other side of The Lounge.

"Maribel del Mar. Anchored in the port of Casablanca. It's a privately owned cargo ship. Supposed to cast off this morning but didn't. It's frozen in ice." I explain to them.
"Iceberg in the middle east? Gill's not subtle." Triplett comments.
"Triplett, how long till you can have my B.U.S. in the air?" I ask Triplett.
"15, tops." Triplett states.
"You heard him. You got 15 minutes to gather your gear." I tell them as Triplett leaves to start up The B.U.S.
"Excuse me, but Gill wasn't hard to track. If H.Y.D.R.A are looking, they'll find him." Hunter says to me.
"The asset said H.Y.D.R.A. would be ready to take him out if they couldn't capture or recruit him. Which is why we have to beat them to it." I explain to him.
"I'll coordinate from The B.U.S.." Coulson tells us before he leaves.
"Down to 14 minutes. Let's get moving." I tell Skye and Hunter before we all leave to get our gear.
As Triplett flies The B.U.S., I already have my suit on and I have just checked in with Triplett to see that we're two minutes out, so I make my way to The Landing Bay to see both Skye and Hunter ready with their parachutes on.
"Trip says two minutes out. Remember, Donnie Gill's a gifted. He could be a formidable weapon for either side. Let's make sure it's ours." I explain to them as Hunter and Skye put helmets on and I walk over to Skye "Be careful." I say to her as I kiss her cheek.
"You, too." Skye smiles at me as I pull the leaver to open up The Landing Bay, and it does so.
"What, no kiss?" Hunter asks with a smirk.
"First, buy me dinner, then let me shoot you with an I.C.E.R. And I'll think about it!" I shout to him before I step off The Landing Bay and fall.
After myself, Skye and Hunter all land on the Cargo ship and I retract my helmet, we part ways with our parachutes before making our way inside where we come across two H.Y.D.R.A. agents, so I take out my Night-night gun from my left with my left hand and shoot them both.
"Coulson, we're not alone." I tell him over our coms before I tap on my left cuddling with my right index finger, and my helmet disappears into my suit.
"Not what I hoped, but not unexpected. Proceed. Let me know when you have eyes on Gill." Coulson tells us as I make my way down to the next level, and I don't see anymore H.Y.D.R.A. agents.
"Copy that." I tell Coulson before I look to Hunter and motion with my head for him to follow me.
"Skye, you cover the door." Hunter tells Skye.
"You don't give the orders, Trainspotting." Skye tells him.
"I'm not Scottish." Hunter tells her as he walks over to me.
"Skye, be a sweetheart and protect the exit route." I tell her.
"Roger that." Skye tells me before myself and Hunter move through the ship in search for Donnie and any unexpected H.Y.D.R.A. agents.
"Lyra, Hunter, do either of you have eyes on Gill?" Coulson asks us, and I motion for Hunter to go in a different direction with my left hand, and he does so.
"Not yet." I tell him as we move the centre of the ship.
"Target is talking to H.Y.D.R.A." Hunter states.
"End that conversation. Now." Coulson says, so I head to where I sent Hunter.
"Copy that." Hunter states as I reach the level Hunter is on and see Gill talking to H.Y.D.R.A., only that the H.Y.D.R.A. agent is Simmons.
"Simmons..." I trail off before I take out my gun out of my right holster with my right hand and shoot hunter in the chest, and he falls to the floor and drops his gun.
"You think I don't know what you're trying to do? You're just like the rest of them. You liar!" Gill shouts before he tries to attack Simmons, but she runs off so Gill follows her.
I then shoot a nearby pipe next to him with my right handed gun, making steam come out of it but Gill places his hand over it and it freezes over before he goes after Simmons.
"What am I hearing?" Coulson asks us.
"Lyra shot me." Hunter states.
"Repeat?" Coulson asks him.
"Lyra shot me." Hunter repeats.
"Simmons is here. Repeat, Simmons is on site with H.Y.D.R.A.. Do we maintain her cover?" I ask Coulson.
"Yes. Maintain her cover." Coulson tells us.
"What about the primary target?" Hunter asks him as myself and Hunter regroup, but Hunter with his bullet proof jacket revealed as I shot him.
"If we can't take him in, we take him out. Do you copy?" Coulson asks us.
"Copy that." Hunter states.
"Copy." I state before myself and Hunter follow where Gills went. As we both stalk down the hallways that Gill and Simmons went down, and when we come to a cross path I look both ways before heading left "Exit's this way. " I tell Hunter, but once we get to the door, Ice seeps through the cracks.
"It's frozen." I tell Hunter.
"Let me." Hunter says as he holds up his gun, and I step aside as he fires at the door three times, but nothing happens.
"We trapped." I tell him, and the walls, ceilings and floors begin to slowly freeze until it stops suddenly.
"The threat's been neutralized. H.Y.D.R.A. doesn't have him." Skye informs us over our coms.
"And Agent Simmons?" I ask her.
"Her cover's been maintained. She's safe for now. They're leaving empty-handed. But we're not." Skye explains.
After getting back to The Playground from the mission with a B.U.S. full of H.Y.D.R.A. cargo from the ship, I lose Skye as she's wandered off, so I walk onto The B.U.S. to see Triplett and Mack as they might know where she is.
"Triplett, have you seen my sister?" I ask him.
"Upstairs." Trip tells me.
"Thanks." I say to him as I head to the stairs, but Hunter comes down them and stops me.
"In case you're wondering, I'm all right. Nasty-looking bruise on my shoulder. Hurts like hell, but I deserved it." Hunter explains, and I hum in agreement "So, we're even? Right?" He asks me nervously.
"You didn't pass out for almost an hour." I say to him.
"Oh, bloody hell." Hunter sighs as he walks past me, and I turn to Triplett who lightly chuckles, and I show him a smile before I head upstairs. Once I get upstairs, I reach The Briefing room to see Skye sitting on the table as she types away on her laptop.
"What are you doing in here?" I ask her as I stand in the doorway.
"I don't know. It reminds me of before." Skye explains to me as she doesn't look up at me.
"Should replace the glass if we're gonna take her out regularly." I say as I refer to the shattered windows in The Briefing room as I walk over to her, and I prompt myself up beside her on the table so I sit on her right.
"I've been monitoring Moroccan law-enforcement channels. They still haven't found Donnie Gill's body yet." Skye looks at me as she places her laptop down beside her on her left.
"You okay?" I ask her as I take my left hand in her right hand.
"No. I get why Coulson kept what Simmons was doing from us. I understand he's protecting her, making sure no one compromises her mission, but you knew?" Skye asks me as she takes my hand out of hers and jumps down off the table.
"I knew." I nod as I also jump off of the table.
"I'm scared for her. Simmons in H.Y.D.R.A.? She's a terrible liar. I'm serious. I love her, but her trying to lie, it is a horror show." Skye explains to me.
"Maybe before, but not anymore. She can handle it. She's good. She's not the only one." I say as I look at her Skye and refer to her, and she immediately pulls me into a hug.
"It was horrible." Skye admits to me as I hug her back.
"I know..." I rub her back in comfort "... But I'm here, whenever you need me." I assure her.
After comforting Skye, I go to see Ward about the possible brainwashing that was used on Gill and to see if he can give me an answer to what he wants to achieve from my visits, and why he'll only see me. After I walk down the steps to VAULT D and hold an electronic tablet in my right hand, Ward immediately stands up from his makeshift bed to see me.
"Relieved it's not Fitz?" I ask him as I heard that Fitz found Ward down here and try to suffocate him by reducing the oxygen levels in his cell, and I stand a few feet away from the barrier.
"Happy it's you, that you're okay. I'm, uh, glad I could help." Ward tells me as he sits back down.
"You said H.Y.D.R.A. had a way of convincing people. You were talking about brainwashing, weren't you?" I ask him.
"It's not done often, but it's done. It's a lot of work, and some people aren't susceptible. It's mostly used on high-value targets." Ward explains to me.
"Like you?" I ask him.
"I wish I could say that's what happened. But I swore I'd never lie to you. No. I was never brainwashed. Everything I did, good and bad... I did of my own free will. Do you believe I'm telling you the truth?" Ward asks me, and I hesitantly nod.
"I just don't know why. I don't know what you hope to achieve by-" I try to say, but he cuts me off.
"-I don't hope for me. I hope for you. I know something. And I want you to believe me when I say it." Ward says before he stands up and walks towards the barrier "Your father is alive. He's looking for you." He says, and I begin to feel my heartbeat quicken "And someday, if you let me, I'll take you to him." He explains as I take the electronic tablet and turn the security camera's off.
"If this is for me..." I trail off as I step closer to the barrier, and Ward "... If you ever, and this is the biggest if in the world, get out of here. You can tell my father I don't want to be found, and that he will never see me or Skye in our lifetimes before you empty your gun clip into him, and if that doesn't kill him. Do something poetic like he did to me." I explain to him before I walk away and leave the cell, and I turn the security camera's back on as I do so.

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
