The End of Disappointment
What happens when the hero's journey ends with disappointment instead of happily ever after? Ghost. Butcher. Murderer. Some men attract names like flies, and Ryu Ishida unfortunately finds himself among their number. Once the son of a noble house, he knows firsthand what the quest for power in the world of the Rings can do to a man’s mind, yet he can only continue down the bloody path he started long ago, hoping that at its finish, he’ll find the end to his disappointment. Four hundred years after a portion of humanity was ripped from Earth and thrust into a world of magic, monsters, and swords, whatever cruel gods rule the Rings are stirring once more, and with them comes the chaos of progress. Monsters roam the land. Corruption breeds unchecked. Murderers slay their way to the heights of power. Ryu’s life could only be described as disappointing. Opportunity not just to see the world, but to change it... to change all of creation. There are many stories to tell upon the Tree of Yggdrasil, where all of creation hangs from its branches. 800 years have passed since Planet Maorus fell, not to an outside force, but at the hands of the tools the humans created to fight their wars. The Alpha’s, powerful artificial minds directed these wars, following the directives of their creators. Human’s unaware of their mistake were soon caught in between a war of machines on a global scale, scouring the surface of all life in a never-ending war between Primes. Or so that is how it should have been. Alpha-7, once a hidden manufacturing and research facility has become a refuge for the remnants of humanity, living under its protection beneath the surface. Here they traverse the Hollows a vast network of underground caves and tunnels, slowly expanding their reach while the humans thrive under 7’s protection. Yet the Hollows are not without their dangers, and even the Bunker is not completely safe. Yet Alpha-7 is determined to see to the propagation of its wards, seeking to strengthen and grow the foundations of their power. Hoping to one day return them to the surface, but first it will need to deal with three unruly children and their unique gifts. Tensions between the big players are rising, with more and more plots getting revealed, and powers are unexpectedly shifting. As the string of seemingly unconnected events grows taut, the smaller nations suddenly find themselves into the midst of things, struggling with the sudden shifting of their boards. On a more meta note, I am trying to develop two storylines parallel to each other. As you might have noticed, odd-numbered chapters are very different from even-numbered chapters. That’s because those are the two different storylines; odd-numbered chapters are in the present, while even-numbered ones are in the past. Once the two eventually meet I'll continue with just the present storyline. This story can also be found here where it currently updates every other Sunday (about twice a month).
