It was a really close call; too close

Good thing I was able,

To duck behind cover swiftly

You can thank God for giving me fast reflexes

Anyways the shots came from hidden enemy soldiers

That was setting up an ambush for us

Good thing our scouts already informed us about this

So our platoon was ready

That's why we were able to

Quickly dispatch them all

Still, the experience almost got me killed

And if I die, then

I wouldn't be able to fulfill my promise

To safely come back home

To you and our kids

And you know that incident got me thinking

That when I die someday

You and our beloved family

Would be a part of my last thoughts

My last memories before I leave

This good earth behind

Regardless I also realized

How awful wars are

I mean, those poor soldiers we killed

We're just soldiers

Fighting for what they believe was right

And like my comrades and me

They, too, have people, loved ones rather

Who they left behind

Sadly luck was not on their side

I pray that this would soon end

So I can come back to you

And see the kids personally

Not just in the pictures,

You send me my dearest

Which I receive, by the way, mind thee
