《I'm the Best Rune Programmer in a New World!》Chapter 70: The Breaking Point

So we walked towards the guest houses where we'd stayed in the first time we were in Yarthaw.
I guess they don't have scouts or at least they have really bad ones because we haven't been spotted. I mean aren't they worried about criminals just waltzing in here?
I mean maybe they recognized us somehow and so they let us through? Nah I don't think that'd happen so there must just be no scouts. I should talk to Ben about that tomorrow. Now though it's time to sleep!
"In the morning you guys stay in until I get you okay? I want this to be a surprise!"
Dob and Lob nodded.
As we neared our guest houses I waved goodnight to Dob and Lob, smiling when they returned the gesture. After that, I entered the same guest house that I'd stayed in before and plopped down on the bed.
This feels kind of nostalgic even though it hasn't been that long since I was here. I can't help but wonder what changes Whitebridge will have gone through when I get back. Hopefully, Stella and everyone are okay.
After I calmed myself down with the fact that I couldn't do anything anyway right now I eventually fell asleep.
"SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH"
"Who is it?! I'm armed!"
I threw my dagger and ran its program and it flopped to the floor.
What. Why isn't this damn thing working? Oh, there must be no hostile creatures near me. Oh flip. How could I forget about the bird? It had been a while since it woke me up so I guess I kind of pushed it towards the back of my mind.
Well, the joke's on you bird because you actually helped me today. Now I can go to breakfast.
"Take that bird!", I yelled.

"SCREECH"
"That better not have been an insult!", I responded, shaking my fist.
I bet it was an insult but I can't speak bird so I can't be sure. Anyway if it was I'll forgive it since it actually helped me today. Now if only it would change its screeching to some classical music it would be the perfect alarm clock. Although maybe Dubstep would be better although it might be too much for early in the morning.
Since no one was going to get us I was free to go out whenever without the fear of leaving and then someone coming to get someone up who was already moving. So I quickly got dressed and then headed out to wake up Dob and Lob.
Hopefully, they remembered to wait for me before going to breakfast.
In no time at all, I'd gotten Dob and Lob up and we were ready to go to breakfast.
"Guys keep your heads down. I don't want anyone to recognize us before we get to the Dining Hall."
I tried to keep my head down as we walked and no one seemed to recognize us. When we got to the Dining Hall I made a shushing gesture with my hands, placing a finger over my mouth. Everyone saw us coming in but by some miracle, no one broke character and kept talking like normal. I noticed that most people were now glancing at us every so often out of the corner of their eye, however.
I have to sneak up on Ben. I can't miss this opportunity.
I looked around for Ben and found him in the far corner of the Dining Hall chatting with Nate while they both ate their breakfast. I slowly snuck up behind him as Dob and Lob followed behind me. I knew Nate would see me so I kept my finger in front of my mouth.

When I got close enough I quickly tapped him on the shoulder.
"Ahhh. Um sorry about that. How can I help you?", he responded, turning around to face me.
"Surprise!"
"Ah, Jameson! It's a pleasure to have you back! You almost gave me a heart attack just then."
"Nah you're stronger than that!"
"Hehe. Untrue but thanks for the flattery regardless!"
I don't think it's untrue but I guess I'll move on from that.
"Anything happen since I left?"
"Nah not much besides the norm although due to what you accomplished in the mines production has gone up tremendously!"
"Good good! I expected it to but confirmation is sure good to hear", I said, grinning widely.
This is good. Scorpion will basically have to tell me about his plans after all this work that I've done for him.
"Well, this was just a quick stop. We'll be back after I finish up some things back home."
Yeah because after that I need to go back to Addersfield and help take down Burke.
"Ah alright well goodbye then!", Ben said.
"Oh, one more thing."
I took out the stick that I'd meticulously whittled down and then programmed and held it out toward Nate.
"Here this is for you. I'll leave you to figure out what it does."
Nate took it from me and his fingers accidentally brushed against one of the 5 keys. A low sound resounded out and Nate jumped back which caused the stick to fall to the ground. Thankfully though it didn't break.
"Hehe. Have fun! Now we have to go I'm afraid."
After Nate came over his shock he came over and hugged me.
Oh uh, I guess I hug back right?
I wrapped my arms around Nate.
"Hey don't steal my child from me", Ben said jokingly.
"It's tempting. Enjoy it, Nate. You're a great kid.", I responded with a grin.
"Oi", Ben added again.
"Alright alright. Nate, I guess your father wants you back now. Hehe."
"Okay. Thanks so much, Jameson sir."
Ah, he's still doing it. Heh. I wonder how long that'll last.
As we waved bye to Ben and Nate I made sure to also say hello to the townsfolk. Well as many as I could. Soon we were back on the road and in no time at all, we arrived back at Whitebridge.
Hmm well, it seems to be a bit after noon but then again I'm not that good at judging time based on the sun's position but it's definitely past noon a bit.
As we walked further into Whitebridge I heard faint chanting from what sounded like a very large group of people.
"War! War! War!"
What the heck?! Have tensions really risen this much? I have to see Scorpion immediately so I can figure out his plan and then I have to go get Melissa to tell the Guildmaster about it. We need to stop this!

I am hoping to turn ths into a series that I can publish to Amazon, but my life is a bit hectic right now, so I can't make any guarantees. However, I have serious reasons for writing at this point in my life, so I will do my best to provide this new twist to the LitRPG genre and keep it up for as long as possible. Thank you, to anyone who reads this. *Also, tags might change depending on how the story goes, there may be mild profanity or mild sexual content, but I have not decided yet.
