《Big Brothers | Completed ✔》Chapter 45: The Countdown (Finale)

"It's finally the new years tomorrow!" I exclaim.
Every new year we all stay home, but that's not it though, we have a party. Usually, I get locked in my room, until the countdown starts, then I get to go downstairs. But that was in the past! Noah said I can invite all my friends and even party!
"Yeah, now we're having a party, will you help us out now?!" Lee shouts, clearly irritated. I roll my eyes as I examine the new year's poster.
Lee comes back with a ladder, as he and Leo climb it, "Give us the poster."
I hand Lee the gold poster as they both hang it up. It looks casual, very cool though. I decided to go to the kitchen and grab all the drinks we need for this party.
I place all the beverages on the table, next to the bowls of junk food. I grab the classic red recycling cups and put them next to the drinks.
Now that our food table looks neat, I walk over to Noah and Aaron, who were setting up the DJ set - which was rented, duh. Aaron was on a ladder, he was setting up the disco light.
"Damn, this party is gonna be awesome!" Aaron says, grinning at his work.
"I don't really know how a party works, what's it like?" I ask him. He laughs as he steps off the ladder, running his fingers through his hair.
"Well, one thing, it gets pretty loud. Second, you always want to have a trustworthy friend with you at all times, it gets pretty crazy, and number three, you want to make sure you never ever, grab a drink from someone. Don't even grab a drink when it's on the table, for all you could know, it could have alcohol in it. Just pour some by yourself, there are other rules, but I think you're smart enough to probably know them," he explained. This whole time, he's been giving me this stern look, so I just nodded and shrugged.
"Sounds good to me," I replied. I snuck over to Noah, who was crouched down under the DJ set, checking all the wires.
"Boo!"
He jumped up and hit his head on the DJ set, "Shit!"
He turned around, narrowing his eyes, and tilting his head to one side.
I couldn't help but laugh, "Thanks for that, Harp."

"No problem," I replied with a sweet smile. He rolled his eyes and stood up, putting his hands on his hips and sighing.
"Let's see if this baby works," he muttered. Noah nervously turned it on, and a song started playing - something I didn't know, and the disco light came down, spinning around and lighting up the entire room.
Noah pumped his fist in the air, "Finally!"
I gave him a golf clap, "Nice job."
He laughed and grabbed both my hands and started clapping them together loudly, "I deserve better clapping."
I yanked my hands away, "Yeah, okay."
I stepped down and saw Aiden, Lucas, Hayden and Neil, sitting on the couch and on their phones.
I laughed, "Where's Conner and Drake?"
Neil simply pointed behind the couch, not taking his eyes off his phone. I followed his fingers and found them both, eating the junk food hungrily.
"Hey! That's for the party guys!" I yell at them. They stop and groan.
"Come on! We wasted all the junk food on the damn party, we wanted some! That and we ran out," Drake said, practically whining, chips flying out of his mouth.
"We'll buy more," I told them, crossing my arms over my chest. Drake huffed and swallowed then put back the chips, and Conner also swallowed, and grabbed another handful, before shoving it in his mouth.
I stared at him with disbelief, "Seriously?"
He shrugged, "I couldn't help it."
Is what he tried to say, but it came out like, "I coudnth helf ith."
I shook my head, a smile playing on my lips, "Whatever."
"Okay, family!" Noah shouted. We turned and saw him on the table, clapping his hands together.
"So," he said and searched for somebody and lit up when he found Lucas, "did you invite your whole school."
He nodded as I widen my eyes, "What?! Why would you do that?"
"Well, come on? It had to be done," Lucas replied.
"I thought you were the adult here!" I exclaimed at Noah, disbelief evident clear on my face.
"It's fine, Harper," he said, waving me off. "You three, did you invite the people you wanted from our college?"
They all nodded, "Well, I just invited Daniel, Zane and Nelson."
"Of course you did," I muttered.
"Okay, I'll tweet it out, the party just started," Aiden said, holding up his phone. So did Lucas, Hayden, Neil, Conner and Drake. I pulled out my phone and I only decided to invite Matthew and Hope.

I texted them both, and I told Hope to get here faster. A few minutes later, Hope arrived. I pulled her in and hugged her, glad she was the first one to arrive.
"Wow, you guys did a great job decorating," she complimented. I smiled at her.
Hope hasn't met my brothers. She knows I have some, but they haven't met her, so today's the day!
"Who was it?" Noah shouted from the kitchen. Before I could answer, Hayden answered for me.
"A girl with glasses. I think Harper's friend," he replied. I rolled my eyes.
We decided to just hang out on the couch, and after a while, the whole house was filled.
I already lost Hope.
I don't even know what happened! One moment she was there, the next, she was gone. I made my way through the sweaty bodies, people doing inappropriate dancing, drinking, all the good stuff.
"Hey, Harper!" Hayden exclaimed over the music as he made his way to me, Neil beside him as usual. I smiled at them, not really paying attention, because I still don't know where Hope is.
"Yeah, hey guys," I said slowly.
"What happened Harper?" Neil asked, furrowing his eyebrows at me.
"Nothing, I just can't find Hope. Have you guys seen her?" I asked. They both looked at me with wide eyes.
"Hope? We thought she was with you! Shit!" Hayden exclaimed, running his hand through his hair. Now I was confused.
"So what?" I asked, also worried.
"We saw a girl, that we thought looked like Hope. She was getting hit on by a bunch of these guys, we were about to save her, but we couldn't since we thought it wasn't Hope," Neil explained. My mouth flew open as my eyes widen.
"What? Let's go find her then!" I exclaim. We all split up and search for her. This is all my fault! Hope is so shy, how will she ever survive this? I can't believe this even happened.
After a few mintutes, I spotted some kids, I think three, and then I saw those thick black glasses. I marched over there, furious.
"You guys?!" I shout. Hope snaps her head up as I pulled her beside me, as Nate and Dylan put their arms up in defence.
"Oh hey Harp," Alex says innocently.
I gave him a deadpanned expression, "Of course it's you three."
"Well yeah, of course," Nate says. I roll my eyes and narrow them.
"What did they do?" I ask, glancing at Hope.
"Nothing, just teasing me," replied Hope. I shake my head at the three, as I pull her away.
"Harper," Hope started warily, "I'm not allowed to stay for the countdown."
"What? Why not?" I asked, already sad.
"M-my parents are already strict enough. They said I can't stay for too long, they want to see me when it's new years," she said sadly. I sighed, knowing I can't be mad at her, but I couldn't help but be sad. I hugged her, as she waved at me and left.
"Well, hello," I heard someone sneer behind me. I turned and rolled my eyes, to be met with the three idiots.
"Whatcha doing, Harp?" Daniel asked, crossing his arms.
"Standing," I replied. They rolled their eyes.
"Listen, Harper," Zane began, "I know we aren't on the best of terms, but can we at least be friendly until the countdown?"
I thought about it and shrugged, knowing they already got what they deserved, "Fine."
"TEN!" Everyone suddenly exclaimed. I checked the time and it was already 11:59!
"NINE!" I ran, searching for my brothers.
"EIGHT!" At least one of them, I'm sure they're searching for me now.
"SEVEN!" I ran through the bodies, everyone looking at the digital clock.
"FIVE!"
"FOUR!"
"THREE!"
"TWO!" I made contact with all of them.
"ONE! HAPPY NEW YEARS!" I jumped into Noah's arms as we all had a group hug.
"Thanks for being the best Big Brothers ever," I whispered. They all smiled.
Couples kissed, friends hugged, everyone started dancing-
"Harper!" I heard someone shout my name. I looked beside me and saw Matthew, running up to me.
He tackled me in a hug, "Happy New Years."
"Right back at you."
I knew in life, that you come across challenges. Challenges that you can't get through or resolve by yourself, so, you'd probably need somebody beside you to help you all the way with. I knew I had my family with me, my friends, and most importantly, my brothers.
I am so grateful for my brothers.

It is just large enough for a college, a small town, and maybe even a few more unusual sorts of places. Of course, the townsfolk practically know each other as family. They fuss away now, spouting the usual gossip as they watch us all from on high. Then there is the College here on the Isle of Red. My college. It has been often described as an unusual place by a good deal of people on the mainland. If they only would visit -why I am sure they'll soon have a change of heart, they may even come to find it a quaint sort of place, odd but in the same way a tattered old quilt can be both odd looking and warm, and especially soft. We teach mostly the same sort of disciplines here, with fantastic and absolutely normal professors.I must conclude that I am quite smitten with myself. The stage is set with a level of perfection that would have astonished me in my youth. They are coming. Derek will follow her. He knows the weight of reality too intimately, but she will be his true north if only for a short time. She holds onto questions feverishly tight, that one. Lights them up inside like a new type of fuel without the slightest worry of being burned. She knows... There is but a certain few who can look at a map and find nothing where I stand but the Atlantic Ocean. The Epiphany Colony
Brad Asher has been a private detective on the Epiphany Colony orbiting Mars for about a year before stumbling into a conspiracy that threatens the safety and stability of the colony. Note that the story here is the first draft and has a lot of ideas, characters, and plotlines that I ended up dropping in the final version that I released here currently available on Kindle Unlimited. The entire second half was restructured, as I ended up not being satisfied with some of the things that I introduced and felt like it had strayed too far from my initial vision of a space-based detective noir story.
