《The Last Set || Sugawara x Reader ||》Hows and Whys

"REM sleep behaviour disorder" the neurologist explained to you.
"Sorry what now?" you blinked in confusion at the doctor. You were wrapping your hands with bandages that the nurses provided. After taping up your fingers you placed an icepack against your bruised cheek.
At least she didn't bite my fingers off...
"It's when a cycle of 'rapid eye movement' sleep is disturbed causing a sudden convulsion in muscles and irrational actions. We must've agitated her while she was asleep, due to her ability to still subconsciously hear her surroundings." a voice croaked.
It was (F/N) who answered you. You turn to your left and see (F/N) lying still on the couch. She must've just woken up. You still had no idea what she just said.
"That is correct (F/N). You've been studying a lot lately I see." his blue eyes have fallen on her and she weakly smiled back at him. You carefully approach (F/N).
"Hey, are you feeling okay?" you ask with concern in your voice. She noticed all the bandages on your hands and the huge bruise on your face. She nodded slightly but you could tell she had guilt in her eyes.
"Good news is that Kiyoko has finally woken up, but we need to make sure she won't harm anyone. We'll be keeping her here for another few weeks or so. I've already contacted your mother and she's on the way to pick you both up." he explained to (F/N).
"What about Daichi?" (F/N) asks.
"Well he's in the emergency room getting stitches for his cut. But I reassure you he'll be okay. His parents are already here to take him home."
The cut was that deep? I didn't think he needed stitches.
You look back at Kiyoko and her face has fallen back to a peaceful state. Her limbs were restrained to the bed and an IV drip was inserted into her arm. Fortunately, she didn't need the ventilator anymore.
"We had to sedate her. It was the only way to stop her aggressive behaviour." He explained to (F/N). She was still groggy, but she couldn't believe that her sister had finally woken up from her year long, deep slumber.
"What about her memory?" (F/N) peeped. She was still buried under a blanket you found at the nurses station.
I can't believe she passed out again. At least she recovered faster this time but still... Her concern is still directed towards Kiyoko. She never puts herself first.
The doctor's blue eyes hovered over the charts he was holding. His eyes scanned the papers and he mumbled a few words to himself. He flipped a few pages again and his eyes were moving left to right rapidly. Flipping the papers, his blue eyes widened. He then flipped them back to its original position.
"Well. Reading the charts of the time she woke up to her explosive episode, seems like all her neurons in her brain fired simultaneously. You all must've triggered something in her brain, causing her to awaken"
"Thus causing her to temporarily loose function of time and spacial recognition." (F/N) completed his theory.
I still have no idea what's going on.
"Suga. You know what this means?" She turns to you all excited. She finally smiled again, and seeing her smile brought sense to all the craziness that's happening around you.

"Um. Sorry not quite?" you respond shyly, fiddling with the icepack.
I look so dumb right now.
"What he means is that Kiyoko had a small 'seizure', but it didn't make her seize up how a normal seizure would. It just made her have short term memory loss, making her forget who she was when she woke up! That must mean her memory is recoverable? Right senpai?" she asked all excitedly. You've never seen her so happy before. It made your heart dance a little.
"Yes, precisely. But (F/N) her memory might take some time to recover. Depending on how significant you were, but most likely how long you've been in her life..."
(F/N)'s face had suddenly fallen and she looks at you in sudden realization.
"So that means..." she said in a tiny voice.
"She might not remember me or Daichi." you continue, putting the pieces together.
"But she'll remember you." you say reassuringly to (F/N). You grab her hand a squeeze it gently. The corners of her lips have slightly lifted but, she still looked at you with sympathy.
Daichi... He'll be just a forgotten memory to her? He's losing her again for the third time. And just when we were so close. At least she's awake, that's one step closer.
"What should we do senpai?" she asks with desperation, gripping the bed sheets.
"Well, after we are done rehabilitating her muscles and she's calmed down...the best way to retrieve her memory back is through time." senpai answered, scribbling notes on the clipboard. He was then murmuring more intricate medical terms you've never heard before.
"Fascinating. I've never seen a case like this." he said to himself. He was looking at the monitors and observing Kiyoko from afar. He still jotted down more notes and said,
"It is uncertain you can fully retrieve everything back. However, you can surround her with familiar things to trigger them, without overwhelming her or course. Still... the brain is-"
"an art and not an exact science" (F/N) recited. She looked up to him and you can see a crooked smile forming on his lips. His blue eyes were shining with admiration at (F/N). It was like a teacher and a favourite student.
"Correct again (F/N)" he smiled brightly at her.
"So, we just show her around the school! Or maybe make her have a dinner with the volleyball team. It'll be like old times." you suggest to (F/N). She gazes at you but she's not smiling this time.
"I don't know Suga. Maybe its best to not expose her to something like that... It might trigger something bad. Or I don't know, what senpai said, we don't want to overwhelm her..." she wasn't looking directly at you but you could tell she was uncomfortable. She started wringing the blanket in front of her.
She doesn't want Kiyoko to end up like her... but it's the only way to get her back.
"Well, I will leave you guys to rest up. (F/N), your mother will be here anytime soon. I will check up on Kiyoko in a few hours. Call me if you need anything again!" he clicked his pen on the clipboard and waved goodbye to the two of you. He happily walked through the door as it closed with a 'click'. She places her hand on top of yours and rubs it gently, carefully not to touch your bandages.

"I'm sorry." she apologized with sadness in her voice.
"Hey." you lift her chin up, making her look directly at you. "Don't feel guilty for things that are out of your control. It's not your fault any of this happened."
"Y-you wouldn't be in this mess if it wasn't for me." she still continued to rub her thumbs gently over your hand. Her touch was so comforting to you, you never wanted it to end.
"I'm happy I came, really."
"It's been only two days Suga and it's already been crazy"
I wouldn't ask for anything else. But obviously you couldn't say that so instead you say,
"Character development, is what I call it" reciting her exact words. She laughed softly but you could tell it was a bit forced. She sighed and closed her eyes.
"It's my fault though. I started an argument in the car right before we got hit. Maybe I distracted my dad while he was driving..."
You take hold of her hands again and bring them close to your face. You close your eyes as well.
"You always seem to find a way to blame it on yourself, even when the accident was inevitably. I was worried at first because you seem to hold this huge weight on shoulders, but you do this because you love your family. You care for those around you and you love with all your heart. This is why I-I, um, l-like you."
You were so close to saying 'I love you' but you backed away because you thought it would creep her out. Not only that, it's only been two days! But with her, if felt like a lifetime.
She suddenly pulls you into an embrace and you hug her back with the same longing. You place your head on her shoulder and sniff her hair. She still smells like lavender. She buries her head into the crook of your neck. You can feel her chest heaving as she sniffles into your shoulder,
"What are we going to do Suga?"
"We'll figure something out. I'm here for you."
Just when you think the moment is perfect to tell her how you feel, you're interrupted by the sudden eruption coming from the door. It was (F/N)'s mom. She barged in and didn't think twice but direct her attention to Kiyoko. She dropped her bag carelessly to the floor and came crashing down on Kiyoko's bedside. She sobbed hard and didn't even notice that you were still holding (F/N).
"My baby. You're finally awake." she cried stroking her hair.
With that, you let go of your embrace and stand up quickly to greet (F/N)'s mom properly. Your face was beet red and you couldn't control your emotions.
"Shimizu-san. Thank you for giving me a ride home" you blurted out and bowed in her presence. She quickly wiped her tears with the back of her hand and faced you.
"Oh, its you again. Suga isn't it? My goodness, it's so lovely that (F/N) is making friends in high school."
Looking towards (F/N) you can tell she's embarrassed by her mom's comment.
"Ma..." she angrily whispers.
"What? It's nice that you're making friends. Especially if they're this handsome." she replied.
You face started to turn red and you smile shyly at (F/N)'s mom.
"Haha. Shimizu-senpai, you're too kind."
"Well its true isn't it? I can't thank you enough for taking care of (F/N). And now you're even here for Kiyoko."
"Maa thats enough." (F/N) directed her wide eyes to her mom. She stood up and approached Kiyoko's bedside. She looked at her sleeping sister then back to her mother. She pulls her mother into a strong embrace, saying nothing to each other but letting out cries of joy.
I feel like I'm interrupting...
(F/N) directs her gaze to you, realizing that you're still standing there awkwardly.
"Oh, sorry Suga." she wipes her tears away quickly. "We just got so excited that Kiyoko is back."
"Nono, no worries! I feel like I'm intruding a family thing. You must all feel glad." you smile at (F/N). "I'm glad she's okay."
"Let's take you home Suga. A small 'thank you' for all the trouble I've caused you." she shyly says. Her eyes were distracted by your bandaged fingers and swollen cheek.
"You kids must be hungry. I'll make you something at our house Suga. Our treat." (F/N)'s mom offers and (F/N) looks at her mom in shock.
"Um. No, that's okay! I don't mind eating at my house." you politely reject.
"No Suga I insist." Shimizu-senpai offers again. You felt rude to decline again but you could feel your stomach growling.
I've barely eaten today. I didn't even have lunch because of Hinata.
You notice it started to rain hard from the formation of condensation on the windows. (F/N) looked uneasy at the rain and her mom looked down at her. Her mom gave her the 'it'll be okay' face and went downstairs to start the car.
"Scared of the rain?" you ask (F/N), who was intensely staring out the window.
"Just not fond of it. That's all" she replied nervously.
Before leaving, you give one last goodbye to Kiyoko. We will find our way back to each other soon Kiyoko. We'll help you remember who you are. Heading downstairs to the front of the building with (F/N), a yellow car was honking. The driver rolled down the window and it was (F/N)'s mom.
"All right! Come on in!" she yelled across the parking lot. You shield the rain with your jacket and notice (F/N) shivering. You throw your jacket on top of her head and without hesitation, you take hold of her hand and start running towards the car in breakneck speed. Climbing into the car, both of you are shaking out the rain in your hair and patting yourselves dry.
"Home it is!" her mother exclaimed. She accelerated forward and the facility slowly faded away. Leaving Kiyoko behind. (F/N) was soon fast asleep and you decided to rest up as well.
What a day with (F/N). Everyday is an adventure with her.
(F/N)'s head drifted towards you and you don't hesitate to lend her your shoulder. Both of you drift asleep, not knowing that (F/N)'s mom was smiling giddily from the rearview mirror.

(Oh, and the MC is NOT a psychopath, a rapist, a hypocrite, or human garbage, so sorry for those who like that, because I don't like that). So if you're allergic to it, don't read this story, you would inevitably be disappointed.
