《Walking a fine line✔️》10. In your dreams

The four of us made our way to the classroom designated to our school where the rest of our schoolmates had already gathered. It looked as though all the desks had been removed from the room, leaving only chairs for us to sit on. Mr Wilson beelined towards us, clipboard in hand, the moment he saw us come in. "You four were almost late."
I grinned. "Almost but not quite."
Before Mr Wilson could reply, June plastered a smile onto her face. "So sorry, we got caught up at the netball court. It won't happen again."
"Make sure it doesn't." He looked down at his clipboard. "Have any of you seen Harry?"
We shook our heads. Mr Wilson frowned and walked out the room. I caught Jack playfully shaking his head at me from the other side of the room so I pulled a face at him.
"I kinda feel sorry for Harry," Ruben said. "Mr Wilson really has it out for him."
"I wouldn't want to be in his shoes," Noah replied, sitting down on one of the chairs at the edge of the room. "No wonder he hasn't shown his face, I'd be hiding too."
"Yeah," June agreed.
"It's nice to see everybody together again," Miss Martin, one of our school's geography teachers, began. Quickly the rest of us sat down and turned our attention to her and Mrs Johnson at the front of the room.
"I feel like I haven't seen most of you since yesterday." She laughed. "I hope you've all been having a good time and representing our school well. I know the geography students have."
Mrs Johnson took over. "This classroom is ours for the next two weeks so feel free to use it whenever you wish. Right now we're here to check in with you all, as well as inform you of activities going on."
"Activities are some of the best ways to gain extra school points," Miss Martin continued. "Currently we're in second, so participation in these random activities is essential."

A hand flew up.
"Yes?"
"What are the extra activities?"
I whispered to Noah, "With this school I'm expecting either quidditch or ballroom dancing. Nothing in between."
Noah chuckled quietly. "Or something super boring such as who can clean the blackboards the quickest."
Miss Martin smiled. "Glad to see the enthusiasm. Right here I have the entire schedule which shall be stuck up on the wall of this classroom until the end of the championship. To participate in most activities you just need to show up at the right time and place."
"Exciting," said June.
"There are a few activities however that are off the school grounds meaning that you will have to sign up for them. There are others which require more organising, such as capture the flag, which I must mention is compulsory for all."
The classroom burst into hushed whispers while Ruben groaned beside me. "I've heard we camp the night before. Camping just brings back traumatic family holidays in France."
I nodded. "Jack said that too. It'll be great."
"Today is Monday." Mrs Johnson looked down at the schedule. "Until and including Friday most of the activities will just be the regular subjects, though make sure to check out the scavenger hunt on Wednesday afternoon."
"Any other questions?" Miss Martin asked. "No? Okay, I think that's all we had to say." People began getting up and she raised her voice. "Remember our boys hockey team is playing Beckfall High tomorrow so go support them if you're available. If you need any of us teachers, we will check this classroom frequently."
Students began getting up and leaving.
"What time is it?" I asked.
June glanced at her watch. "Ten to three."
"Okay, I'm going to do some studying before dinner. I have a chemistry test tomorrow. Anybody want to join me?"
Ruben nodded. "I also need to. We should go to the library."
"Perfect," I replied, standing up.

"While you two nerds study, Noah and I will be having the best time playing ping pong."
Noah blinked then smiled. "We will."
The school library was jaw dropping. It spoke in the language of silence and awe. Ancient wooden shelves lined the walls and the aisles in the room. While many of the books were modern text books, ancient, hand bound books lined the higher shelves which could only be reached on a ladder.
Ruben and I planted ourselves at a table in the science section near the back of the library, our work quickly covering the entire table. After almost two hours of quietly studying without many interruptions, Brittney walked past our table and into the chemistry aisle a few rows down, a determined look on her face.
Ruben leaned over. "I still can't believe she's the head teacher's daughter. I'd hate to go to the same school where my parents worked."
"Aye. It would be so strange." I shuddered. As much as I loved my parents, I didn't want to be around them 24/7. "How's the bio going?"
Ruben made a face. "I'm questioning my reasons for doing it."
I glanced over at his many pages of notes and diagrams and laughed. "Understood. I feel the pain."
About ten minutes later Brittney walked back past our table, her hair slightly ruffled and face flushed. I raised my eyebrows at Ruben who chuckled.
"I'm going to stretch my legs. They're almost dead," I said, tying my hair back into a bun. "I'm turning into a zombie."
I left Ruben muttering about protein synthesis and turned into the physics aisle. I wandered down it and many others, pulling out interesting looking books here and there. In the chemistry aisle I refined my book looking to the organic chemistry section, hoping to find a copy of a particular textbook.
At the end of the row another student was sitting at a small table, his back turned to me. I ignored him and continued searching. After a few minutes looking, I groaned, it seemed the shelf had every book but the one I wanted.
"I didn't expect to cross paths with you again this soon." The student at the table spoke.
I turned my head towards him and frowned as I suddenly realised who was sitting at the table. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm throwing a party," Griffin said blandly and I rolled my eyes. "Should I be concerned that you're here, princess?"
"I'm looking for a book."
He raised his eyebrows. "No pranks? I'm shocked."
I laughed. "It might be surprising but my whole day doesn't revolve around you."
"Not yet." He winked and ran a hand through his dark wavy hair.
"Not ever." I turned back to the bookshelf. "Only in your dreams Carter."
"What are you looking for?" he asked suddenly, walking over to me.
"Organic Chemistry by Anne Hastings." I hesitated for a moment. "It has a good reaction chart in it."
"I know," Griffin said with a smile. "It got me through last term."
"Same!" I replied with a grin before I could stop myself. I inwardly cursed. No fraternising with the enemy. I wasn't going to fall for his charming smile. I cleared my throat. "I don't think it's here though."
Griffin walked back to his table and grabbed a book off it. My eyes widened when I saw it was the book. "Here. I've finished using it."
"Thanks." I took it from him then narrowed my eyes. "Why would you help a competitor?"
He took a step towards me and said in a low voice, "Because I know I'll win in the end."
I looked up at him and saw the double meaning clearly in his deep blue eyes. I smiled. "We'll see."

The Kiss of Two Moons
The last year is upon us. The world is ending, but you already knew that; everyone does. Spring has come, and the flowers have bloomed here in this small town with no name. Thousands of different colours now paint the field that had been coloured by frost alone just yesterday. The townsfolk have gathered by the field to celebrate the beginning of the last spring with so many smiling faces. Tears too. I can’t help but wonder whether the flowers will bloom again before the sky falls upon us. Others must be thinking the same. There are moments when the smiles fade and their eyes glaze over as they realize just how near to the end we are. They forget it again in moments. They make themselves forget. The children aren’t like that, though. They don’t seem to understand, or they’ve come to accept it in a way that their parents just can’t manage to. This one boy actually asked me why I was sad. I had to wonder whether he was actually aware that the world is ending, but it seemed wrong to mention it. I ended up just telling him that I was waiting for someone, and he scampered off, wearing a silly smile. I can’t help but feel jealous of him. The beginning of next spring; the day that the world ends. It seems so far away, yet so close. Wherever you are now, I have to ask, how are you spending your last spring? Did you get to see the flowers bloom? Did you smile? Did you cry?
