《EXPOSED》O N E

"Hey... I made it" I say on the phone to Desi. I just arrived at the airport in Arizona and in about ten minutes I will be face to face with my brother who I only spoke to a handful of times over the summer.
"Yay! How's the weather?" Desi ask.
"Don't know yet... I'm waiting to pick up my bags" I say watching all the suitcases roll pass me on the conveyor belt. "Desi I cannot believe you aren't here with me right now"
"Girl... I'll be there on Sunday, literally in two days"
"Who takes last minute family vacations anyway? Now you're coming in the day before classes, we can't explore campus now" I said and she laughs.
"You're nervous"
"No I'm not nervous" I said and Desi doesn't respond. "The last time I spoke to... him" I start to say before I was cut off.
"Him? Are we still not saying his name? What are you going to call him when you see him" she laughs and I roll my eyes.
"Last time I talked to him... we had that huge argument"
"Okay... but Cam... I've been with you all summer. I saw... him... call you and text you plenty of times. You're the one who chooses to ignore them"
"What could he possibly say to me?" I said and she doesn't respond. "Desi... I've moved on. Me not talking to... him... really helped me. I was lovestruck by a guy who had a girlfriend"
"He made you a CD" she said and I laugh.
"Out of guilt for fucking me!" I said. I guess my conversation was too loud for a couple of older women standing next to me as they gave me nasty looks. I look away when I saw one of my suitcases. I hurry to move through the crowd to grab my purple suitcase and I stood there waiting for the second one.
"I don't know..." Desi says.
"Can we not talk or focus on... him. I've had an amazing summer. And now I'm about to have an amazing COLLEGE school year with my best friend. Can we focus on college things like... stressing over homework and exams, parties, booze, and boys who only do one night stands?" I laugh and she joins me.
"You right bitch" she says and I laugh.
"Speaking of boys... how's Trey?" I ask.
"Still pissed that I'm leaving but... to be honest Camari. This long distance, I know it's not going to work"
"I'm sorry"
"Yea, if it's meant to be then it'll be but until then, let's focus on us"

"Exactly"
"Well, I'm glad you made it there safe. Have fun! Tell Breenan and... him... I said hi. And I'll see you soon"
"Sounds good"
"Love you and since you're completely over...him. Try not to fall for him again, okay?"
"Trust me... I won't" I said picking up my last suitcase.
"Talk to you later"
"Bye" I said and we get off the phone. I pull my bags towards the exit area and went to wait under a blue sign with the number three labeled on it. I sit on a bench and look around waiting for Breenan. Tourist and business people walk pass me trying to find their ubers and I continue to watch. It was already getting dark here and I was starving.
"AYE YO CAMARI!" someone yells. I look over and my brother was getting out of his truck. He was wearing black joggers with a red shit. His hair was getting longer like he was growing it out and he takes off a pair of stylish glasses when he approaches me.
"Hi" I said and he stops smiling.
"That's all I get?" he says. Our relationship was still... strange. After finding out what he did in school, lying about it, I finally came to my senses. He was still in the wrong but... I was overreacting. We talked over Summer here and there. Honestly he was trying to make up for missing my graduation ceremony. Desi and I wanted to stay with them in their apartment but first year Freshmen had to stay in dorms.
"What do you mean?"
"Can I get a hug?" he says and I couldn't help but to smile and wrap my arms around Breenan. He hugs me back and I couldn't stop smiling because I've really missed my brother. I step back and look at him.
"Feel free to put my bags in the car, thanks" I said walking away from him to the passenger side.
"Damn...okay" I hear Breenan say and I laugh as I get in on the passenger side. Once Breenan stuffed my suitcases in his truck, he resumes his position on the drivers side and pulls out of the airport. "How's mom and pops?"
"I think they're happy I'm gone" I laugh and he joins me. "But they are driving and should be here on Sunday"
"And Desi will be here when?"
"Sunday as well" I said looking at him. "Thanks for letting me stay with you this weekend"
"And Trevor" he said.
"What?"
"You just said... you... like Trevor doesn't live there. He agreed to have you stay too"

"Right" I said. His name stings in my ear. I had unfollowed... him on all social media so I wasn't sure what he was looking like these days.
"Nia and Tori will be over tomorrow" he said and I roll my eyes at their names. I unfollowed them on social media too and haven't spoke to them since Prom night.
"You have food?" I said changing the subject and he laughs.
"Yea, I'll order pizza when we get to the apartment" he says and I smile and lean my head on the window. I watch all the palm trees go by and the AC was on full blast in the car. Only made me believe it must get really hot out here.
We finally pull into apartment complexes. They were white with gray lining and looked really nice. I stare out the window as I see two women holding a chat while they jog around. An older lady was walking her dog and a guy was sitting on a bench talking on the phone. I look around and smile as I realize the rest of my life starts here.
Breenan pulls into a parking lot and I open the door and a heat wave hits me. Damn. I close the door and look around at people going on about their evening. Breenan was pulling out my suitcases and I hold onto my duffel and my purse.
"Mom and dad bringing the rest of your stuff?" Breenan ask closing the trunk.
"Yea... it was cheaper that way" I said as I follow Breenan. I saw steps ahead but Breenan turns to the elevator.
"We're on the second floor but... I'm not taking these up the stairs" he said and I smile. Once we were out the elevator we walk further down the hall and stopped at a door that had the numbers 278 next to it. Breenan unlocks the door and I couldn't tell if I was hot because the heat or hot because I'm about to come face to face with the guy I've been avoiding all summer. The door swings open and you can tell the air was on full blast yet again. I walk in first and look around at the clean, beautiful, stainless apartment.
"I can't believe you live here dude" I said and he laughs.
"That's what engineer money will get you" Breenan says.
"And it's clean?" I said looking at Breenan shutting the door. He laughs and looks at me. "We cleaned before you came" he says.
"Is... he... here?" I said.
"Trevor? No not yet... getting off of work here soon" Breenan says walking down a hall. Good... buys me more time to prepare myself. Breenan opens the door and I was greeted with a bed that was already made. "We got a comforter for the bed. There's a dresser, a closet and a desk... guess you really won't be needing this room anymore" he said leaving my suitcases by the door.
"Although we move into our dorm... do we get to still come use this room whenever we want?"
"Emergencies" Breenan says then laughs and I roll my eyes.
"Thank you Breenan" I said.
"Yea... whatever" he says and I laugh. "Trevor's room is next to this one and mine is next to his but there is no need to go in either room so doesn't matter" he says and I roll my eyes. "Two bathrooms. One right there and one on the other side of the apartment"
"Sweet. Well leave me alone now. I want to shower and eat so order the pizza" I said closing my bedroom door. I turn around and went to unzip my suitcases and pulled out some shorts and a t-shirt. I walk out the bedroom and I hear Breenan on the phone. I go to what I suppose was the linen closet to grab a couple towels then went to take a shower. It felt good to let the water hit my skin and once I was finished, I wrap the towel around me. I stare at myself in the mirror before opening the door.
I stop and stare at the closed door next to mine. It was... his... room. The T.V was on in the living room and I continue to stare at the door. I wonder what his room look like. Was it similar from back home? Does it smell the same? Is his bed made? I ignore it and went back to my room closing the door to change. I stay in my room starting to unpack when I realize the T.V wasn't the only thing that was talking in the living room. My heart drops when I hear it.
His laugh.
His voice.
He's here.
