I sighed as I got to work, deciding I wasn't going to bother Mr. Havens at all. I sat at my desk quietly and worked on the computer and answered phone calls.
After a while and to my dismay, I saw Dave walking to Mr. Haven's office. I gasped and quickly hid under my desk.
"What are you doing?" Dante said to me, giving me a strange look.
"Shhh! He'll hear you!" I hissed from under the desk.
"Do I even want to know?" he mumbled to himself, and got back to work.
I heard the door to Mr. Haven's office open. "Hello, Mr. Havens," I heard Dave say to him.
"Welcome, Mr. McKinley. Close the door, and come have a seat," I heard Mr. Havens say.
Dave closed the door, and I got back up, and sat on my chair. "Whew, that was a close one!" I exclaimed, letting out a sigh of relief.
Dante gave me a weird look. "Are you going to tell me what all that was about?"
"Okay, so that guy Dave was at Mr. Havens party. He's my ex-boyfriend. We asked each other how we were doing, and he said he was a boss at his own company, so I did a dumb thing and told him that I was also a boss of my own company," I explained. "Wait...I thought I told you that already."
Dante rolled his eyes and face palmed. "I assumed that was a weird joke you were trying to tell me. Why would you do that? You don't lie about stuff like that, especially in business."
"I know! I don't know why I lied. It just kind of came out." I fiddled with my thumbs, looking at the floor in shame.

Dante burst out laughing, and had tears coming out of his eyes.
"What's so funny? Why are you laughing at me?" I glared, looking back up.
"You always get yourself in a bad situation." He kept on laughing.
I rolled my eyes, and then decided to lean against the door to eavesdrop on Mr. Havens and Dave's conversation.
Meanwhile, Mr. Havens and Dave were discussing what other boss from another company should join them in coming up with an idea for them to work on.
"We just need another CEO of a company to join us. Can you think of any?" Mr. Havens asked him.
Dave paused for a moment. "Hmmm...well there is one I know. She was at your party. Her name is Stacey Marks."
Mr. Havens eyes widened. "Come again, sir?"
"Stacey Marks."
He face palmed and laughed. "I think you're getting someone mixed up. You're talking about Anastasia Stacey Marks?"
"Yes, I am." He had a confused tone in his voice.
"She works for me."
"She does? She told me she was a boss of her own company." He sounded shocked.
Mr. Havens chuckled to himself. "She's so...I don't even know the word..."
"But seriously she works at THIS company?"
"Yes. Hold on one second." I heard him coming toward the door.
I quickly sat back in my seat, and got out files.
"Anastasia?" Mr. Havens said as he got out of his office.
My eyes widened. "Um, yes sir?" Please don't tell me to come in there.
"Come in my office please."
I winced at him and gulped. "I'll be there in a few minutes. I actually have to use the restroom-"
He crossed his arms. "Come in, now."
I sighed and slowly went inside. I didn't dare make eye contact with Dave.

"Mr. McKinley here says you are a boss of your own company," Mr. Havens began. "But we all know that is a lie. Lying isn't tolerated under my corporation Ms. Marks." He gave me a stern look.
My face flushed, and my throat felt dry. I opened my mouth, but I couldn't even say anything. Out of all my embarrassing moments here, this was the worst.
"You think you could actually get away with telling someone that you have your own company? Did you even think that through?" He scoffed.
"I don't know why I said that. I wasn't thinking-"
"No you weren't. I would like for you to apologize to Mr. McKinley."
I turned to Dave, and said flatly, "I'm sorry. I'm such an idiot."
"It's okay," Dave said, not breaking eye contact.
"You may go now, Anastasia," Mr. Havens said quietly.
I walked out without saying another word. I have never felt so stupid in my entire life. What was I thinking? Lies always catch up. Why did I lie in the first place?
I went to my desk, and silently did my work.
After a while, Dante asked me, "Honestly, do you ever think things through?"
"Apparently not. If you'll excuse me I have work to do. I'd rather not be mocked right now," I said, feeling annoyed. I didn't mean to sound snappy at Dante because I knew it wasn't his fault.
"I'm not trying to mock you. I'm trying to make you think. You can't just go off telling lies to different businesses." He raised an eyebrow.
"Well, I sure learned my lesson." I sighed, sending an email to a client.
"Good." He nodded.
With that, we went back to work for the rest of the day.
When we were almost done working, I looked at the time, and it was almost five. I got my things together, and quickly made one last phone call. "All done!" I said, feeling relieved I made it through this day.
"You did good today. See you tomorrow," Dante said, waving at me and left.
"Thanks!" I called after him. I went to the elevator to go down but unfortunately, Dave came in at the last second. It was only the two of us.
"Are you going to explain to me why you lied to me?" Dave asked, sounding slightly annoyed.
"Look, I don't even know why I lied," I mumbled, really not wanting to talk about it all over again.
"Stacey." He looked at me sternly.
"Okay, so I may have lied because you told me you were a boss. I felt insecure about being a secretary so I blabbed out a lie." I looked down at the ground.
His face softened. "It's nothing to be insecure about. Being a secretary is very important." He touched my arm, giving me a reassuring smile.
The elevator doors opened. "If you'll excuse me, I'm going home before I make an even bigger idiot of myself than I already have." I walked out of the elevator.
"You're not an idiot, Stacey. I've done a lot more idiotic things than you know." He followed.
"Like what?" I stopped walking and gave him a look.
"Just at Mr. Havens' party I tripped and fell while giving my presentation. You don't remember that?" He chuckled at the memory.
I laughed. "Oh no, you did? I left a little earlier so I didn't see your presentation."
"Yeah, I did." He chuckled again.
"Well, I'm going to go home." I gave him a soft smile.
"Okay. It was nice talking to you. I'll see you around." He smiled and waved goodbye.
I waved back and walked away.
