{2} ♔ Kenzie the Queen ♔ Mackenzie's Perspective ✧
I dig into the first slice of cake I'm given, red velvet. I moan. "This is amazing." I say, taking another bite. Just as I'm about to take a third, my mother stops me.
"Princesses must have a shape of a princess." She reminds me. I swallow and take a bite of the next cake. I want to say it tastes like the vanilla bean frappicino the kitchen makes me, but my mother doesn't know about that. So I only say that it's good. Last is the chocolate. I didn't like it too much. Chocolate is hard to get it to taste like chocolate. This one tastes like eggs.
"Oh, isn't this wonderful?" My mother awes.
"No. I'll take the vanilla." I tell the baker.
"Wait, don't you want something a little more exciting than vanilla?" Mother asks. She has a deep enjoyment of chocolate anything. She will use anything as her excuse to eat some. "Oh, of course." I say and laugh like I'd totally forgotten.
"Have the tiers alternate from vanilla to strawberry. And I want something pink and glamorous." I smile and walk away from my mother who is in a pissed mood now. I laugh because I love how I can do this to her. She lets me. I try to walk out of my room in leggings, a tank top and a black sweater, but my mother stops me.
"Dress up for this dinner. Remember Madison and Josh's big announcement? Oh and wear one of your tiaras." She adds. I roll my eyes and slip into a dress. I don't care enough to fix the waves in my hair so I just flip it over my shoulders and strut into the dining room. I sit across from Madison and next to my dad.

"Finally you've joined us." Mother mumbles. I'm about to snap something back at her, but the dinner is set before our eyes. I dig in and talk all about my party the whole time. "I'm so excited." I tell everyone. Minus the part where my mother picks my husband, I think it'll still be a blast.
---
We finish dinner and I'm about to leave.
"Okay so here's our huge news." Madison stands and so does Josh. "We're pregnant." She smiles.
I hate how people say 'we're pregnant'. Like no, only the female is pregnant, not the guy. My mother gasps and smiles. She stands to hug the soon-to-be parents. This infuriates me.
"That's just like you, Maddie!" I snap at her. Her smile fades and she stares at me.
"You always take every ounce of attention away from me! It's my birthday, it's my time to shine. You couldn't of waited one more week to tell us that you got knocked up?!" I shout across the table. She glares at me.
"No, we both decided tonight was best. And of all people, I thought you would've understood." She starts to storm out and I follow her.
"Why of all people would I understand? You've lived with me for almost twenty years don't you know that I have always hated you?! It's always been the Maddie Show; I never got any attention because of you." I yell. My voice echoes off the castle walls and probably the whole kingdom and the one over can here me. "Mackenzie." My mother hisses.
"No, mother, I can't hold this in any longer. I hate you, Maddie! I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!" I turn on my heel and storm out of the castle into my favorite place in the whole world-the garden. It's always so peaceful and beautiful. I wipe the tears off my face; I can't believe I was crying over her.

I feel kinda bad about what I said; maybe I went over the top this time. Oh, well. I already said it. I walk over to a flower bush and pick off a beautiful purple flower. I read that saying where you shouldn't pick flowers because they are beautiful or something like that but I disagree. This is truly amazing. "I took a long time to trim those bushes." Says Sam, the florist tells me. "I had a rough last couple of minutes." I say.
"Maddie?" He asks.
"Maddie." I answer.

Its conditioning and training take an unexpected twist as it develops abilities and skills different from the others of its kind. -------------------- Surrounded by manufactured warriors who are incredibly powerful from day one, our MC will find himself lacking in innate skills and knowledge. Red Street Daybreak
August Samuel Hatch was born under an inauspicious pattern of stars. It's granted him what is widely considered the most unlucky of inconveniences: becoming host to a powerful but pernicious spirit that will act as his guide and protector--and one day end his life. Sairne is sworn to stand by August's side and, when the fancy strikes her, advise him, all in the service of atoning for a past life she can’t remember having committed a grave enough offense to earn her soul indentureship in the mortal realm. Bound by a celestial contract neither one can negotiate, their fates are all they've ever known. But in a city ruled by religious right and where magic runs deep as bedrock, their search for a missing friend leads them to a dark conspiracy that could transmute the very magic that binds them to their fates, and that might grant them the ultimate choice: do they save the city or save themselves? Cross-posted on Wattpad and Ao3. For fans of fantasy YA story beats if they starred adults instead, 1920s inspired setting, lots of banter, larger cast of characters, somewhat soft magic system. Completed, but being actively edited prior to posting! I'm the only captain on this ship, so mind any errors.
